Lee Se-young said in an interview that in this drama, she will be experiencing things that she hasn't yet experienced in real life, including marriage, childbirth and child-rearing. So that gives us an idea of the time span for this drama. Also, how pretty is the wedding scene going to be??
I've watched a lot of dramas and loved many but this is the only one I've ever rewatched. It just hits all my sweet spots: star-crossed lovers, operatic music, gorgeous costumes, a backdrop of history. Just like Romeo & Juliet, you don't go into this drama for the plot. It's all about the heightened emotions and epic, sweeping, almost fairytale-like quality. A lot of sageuks try to convey a sense of high stakes and many do not succeed. This is something this drama does well. Another thing to appreciate is Moon Chae-won's character. She shows a spirit and tenacity that was years ahead of the time (especially in sageuks). To top it off, the secondary characters are excellent and very well portrayed by the supporting cast. It's one of the few times I've ever cried for secondary characters.
I have yet to find a drama to top this one (although Just Between Lovers is close). Realism, complex adult characters and relationships, naturalistic performances, devoid of cliches. Everything I adore and want more of in K-dramaland.
I watched this at a time in my life when the story really resonated with me so I might be biased but I do think this drama is underrated. The performances are very good, particularly Heo Jung-eun, the child actor. You also don't often see the father-daughter relationship explored in dramas, or indeed fatherhood in general. There were some creative touches that I enjoyed, like the dream sequences. I never felt that the drama was mawkish or manipulative. I recommend it for anyone who likes human/family dramas and doesn't need them to always follow the same romance-and-HEA formula. Be prepared with tissues.
Taecyeon does better in comedic and outlandish, exaggerated roles. Honestly the character just seems like him in a hanbok, so hopefully this will be a success. Looking forward to KHY in a sageuk too.
I'm a big fan of the aesthetic they're going for (even if they overdid the yellow filter on the posters). I just hope the showrunners dramatise the politics in an interesting and creative way.
Cast is absolutely stacked. Glad to see Woobin back and healthy, though I would've preferred him be the headliner/top billing in a less crowded drama. I feel like with a cast like this, some talent is bound to go to waste. Will be a bit bizarre to see him and Shin Min-ah in the same drama, but not as love interests.
Really liked The Night Of, haven't seen Criminal Justice despite being a Brit. But The Night Of was pretty heavy on the drugs and violence so it will be interesting to see how this remake turns out.
