Hmm. I think I need to mull this over a little bit before I can give you a satisfactory answer. The thing about this drama is that they leave a lot unsaid and hint at things, so the audience has a lot of room to fill in the details with their imagination. I will get back to you on this one when I have formulated a more cohesive idea about HaoYan's relationship.
Here's a video summarizing a post in Chinese forums discussing the evolution of HaoYan's relationship. LOL. I think they're reading way too much into things and I can't really agree with the analysis of Leyan's initial feelings for Hao Du.

LOL. I saw a comment on instagram, someone said to please give the man a desk job instead so he doesn't go around making more problems for everyone. LOL.
And why he was losing the fight so badly. I was wondering what happened being that he is feared by everyone for his cold-bloodedness and for being an overall martial badass. He got distracted by freaggin' Wei Shuyu!!!! He had the upper hand with the sword fight until *&^%$#^&** Wei Shuyu showed up and Hao Du started questioning whether he was doing the right thing by fighting or if he should just give the floor to Wei Shuyu instead. This also explains why Hao Du didn't volunteer for the fight until the last minute- he was waiting to see if Shuyu would show up. And when he did, he almost screwed it all up for everyone. Aish.
