I’m glad to hear that you found support in your addiction recovery. In the States, addiction is still stigmatized, just not as much as it was in the past. However, it is still very much stigmatized in certain populations, especially underrepresented minorities. Certainly, we now have more sensitive language around substance use disorders, however, we still have major shortages and deficiencies, across-the-board when it comes to dealing with it.
If he has problems with drugs he needs medical help, not being humiliated by media/netizens, or be thrown in prison.…
I agree, this person needs to volunteer for medical attention, or it should be court ordered. I’m prefacing my following statements with this: I’m very familiar with addiction in the U.S. , not in SK. If one illegally used drugs, prescription or illegal/schedule I, they’re committing a crime and are considered criminals, generally. There is hella domestic violence associated with substance abuse, not just alcohol; alcohol just happens to be more easily accessible because it’s legal. In Hollywood, there are a number of big time actors doing amazing jobs under the influence of their substance(s) of choice; Robert Downey, Jr and Toby Maguire, for example, when they were booking major roles while in the grips of their addictions . There are functional addicts in every field; we’ve all probably interacted with someone under the influence and functioning well in their field. We usually don’t know who’s an addict until they’re pretty far gone, or their business gets out in the streets/media. There are a number of substances that withdrawing from can lead to death if not done with proper medical assistance, though not all and not usually. I agree, Yoo Ah In needs help, like so many other people suffering from substance use disorders. And I definitely agree that crimes against other humans and mental health issues both need to be addressed more effectively, and taken more seriously, around the globe. Substance abuse is a mental health issue.
