In historical fiction, characters are often intentionally written as flawed, desperate, or morally gray. Jinqi's actions would be a catalyst that fuels the intense conflict, angst, and struggle between the him and the wife.
Not necessarily to condone his behavior, but I would just enjoy the ride watching the show😁
