I had such high expectations and was really looking forward to watching this BL series. But after two episodes,…
The writing's pretty on point too. Characters are interesting, romance is being well set up, plot is plotting. This is definitely not a case of style over substance.
Of course you're free to not like it, and that you think it feels off. I just wanted to point out that it's not a "mistake" that the production crew made, it was a creative choice that decided immersing the audience in the Hong Kong setting with Cantonese dubbing would be worth it. You can disagree, i know chinese audiences can also be anal about dialects and accents, like i once saw a complaint about an American show that had the actors all speak Mandarin but with different accents and they found that distracting.
Idk when the decision to dub in Cantonese happened but it is normal for Chinese actors who come from different regions to be dubbed. HONESTLY, the idea that lip synching have to be perfect in dubs seems like a Western concept. Just watch Asian media where dubbing would be the norm. heck, watch anime, the Japanese dubs do not 100% match the lip synch.
Nothing against the actors but the production team should've hired Cantonese speaking actors if they wanted to…
Oh how the turns tabled. Because Mainland Chinese film and TV industry was growing lots of actors from other regions like HK or Taiwan would find opportunities there and so would have to be dubbed. And it's often really obvious. I can't totally fault the production team, because it seemed like the casting call did seem to include "can speak Cantonese", but considering how fast production was, maybe they just didn't have time.
It's true, this is what I always see, but not in all series. I hope it gets better 😭
That's because it's dubbed in a completely different language (Cantonese). So the mouths aren't gonna be synced. The reason for the dubbing is because it takes place in Hong Kong and Cantonese is spoken there.
Cantonese sounds almost more like Vietnamese than Mandarin? I was so shocked. Anyway, I just added this to my…
I'm not an expert by any means but Mandarin as a language is apparently more recent in the Sinitic language family tree (Cantonese, Thai, Vietnamese, etc.) so kind of makes sense the latter languages sound more similar.
I guess it might be akin to a gay relationship in the west where the younger calls the older daddy - some might…
There's a pretty popular danmei novel where the love interest does call the main character "Uncle", and the main character likes it. It's not that significant, novels can make their couples do whatever.
Ling Fei/凌飞 for Fan Xiao and Liu Ruiyang/孙睿扬 for Shulang. And I only saw these two names.
Yep, it's pretty popular in the Chinese BL audio drama community with many positive reviews. The producer wanted to have the show made after listening to the audio drama, and the show is clearly influenced by it (even using similar background music) while doing its own thing.

The only ones i recognise are Shi Lihua, who is voiced by Gu Jiangshan, and Xue Baotian, who voices himself because he's already a veteran voice actor. In fact his actor, yuan mingzhe directed the audio drama and voices you shulang.
i know they have beautiful voices. their dialogues would have been even more impactful. i hope china realizes…
Yeah it's not just about dialects (which can take a viewer out of the experience) but also enunciation. Depending on the show british and american actors might opt to speak in a standard accent as well.
Well said 👍🏼I wish all adaptations will stay faithful as much as possible to source material and respect…
Another thing is justifying sanitization so it will have a larger audience. On some level I get wanting a production to do well, especially if you can see how hard they worked on it. I genuinely hope for the best for the production crew and actors of this drama, clearly there was a lot of love put into it. And maybe it won't be as successful as other popular dramas, it's too dark, too toxic, doesn't really fit the taste of the larger BL market. Maybe toning it down would have made it more commercially successful like Revenged Love.
But as an audience member, I wanna be able to praise genuinely good shows, not just give a gold sticker for Effort. I want interesting stories that challenge me. I like psychological horror in my romance and to see it actually play out in this drama is so fascinating, and I'm already seeing other like-minded viewers with so many good analysis and metas. If you feel that you can't authentically adapt an IP, then just don't do it imo. If art really only exists to satisfy the market, not to challenge people, not to challenge itself. Then find another "safer" IP to adapt.
Sometimes, it's better to be physically beaten to death than to have your soul destroyed. When I tell you that…
What's interesting about the bottom thing is when FX first brought it up after sex, YSL didn't really object to it, like that sort of degradation kink is fine when it's with someone you love and trust. But when that is used as a weapon to hurt him, that's when the trauma gets triggered. It's so cruel.
In my opinion, each genre has its own characteristics, and when we are reading or watching fiction, the rules…
I think that's completely valid, I love Fan Xiao. But there are also some people incapable of nuance and taking to hate on You Shulang which is unfathomable to me. They might be a minority, but I've seen them enough that I wish they would just shut up with their stupid comments while I'm looking for more fan work.
wishing China and the rest of the editors would stop putting spoiler scense from the drama in the opening ost…
They've always done that and tbh it doesn't bother me because a lot of the stories are so good, spoilers do not ruin experience. Not sure if that's intentional but what a flex.
