the teaser is out and it's looking good.
Dear My Friends' director & Signal's writter, so I'm excited for it even as someone who actively avoids medical dramas.
This is the best crime drama of 2017. Each episode is complex. You can't skim through or you will miss key…
It's always better to wait till it's complete and watch something on your own pace, the only drawback being you have less credibility if you came up with a theory and want to share it. But I think this one could be overwhelming to watch all at once and part of the thrill comes from having time to make guesses amd wait for them to prove true or false. So wait if you can --- who am I kidding, start ASAP, because it's brilliant.
so there's a 2hr cut, a 3hr director's cut and a 6 x 40 min drama too, with the same cast (and by the same crew I suppose)? How do they compare? Is it worth watching longer tv version for some extra scenes, or is it just filled with tv openings and last episode recaps?
My favorite adaptation. The performance of Dou Shawn, playing the art teacher, comes into focus since I saw him…
what did you like about this version? I enjoy the concept of bringing the story to 1930s Shanghai and the movie was very well-made (visually stunning), but as an adaptation it's probably my last favourite. I was never sold on Du Fenyu, and she's always the hardest piece of puzzle to pull, either making everything believable or not.
can we have a shoutout for 'smoking kills' message in Hit the Top, paired with an elaborate reference…
I don't know if unusual, it happens, maybe with varying degree of how graphic the depiction is. Perhaps I pay more attention, because they always take their shoes off and arrange them neatly before jumping off the building or a bridge, and it's such a foreign detail it sticks to me.
can we have a shoutout for 'smoking kills' message in Hit the Top, paired with an elaborate reference to Goblin? That's my favourite recent example of cheating the censorship with not showing the problematic moment.
But more often than not, what is censored and what's not is beyond me. Take Circle, around ep 3 I guess? A suicide forced by some neuroscience mumbo-jumbo is fine. An eerie worm size of my pinky crawls out of the dead girl's nostril - no-one blinks. But a tiny splatter of blood next to her head, and someone responsible runs screaming for a blurring team. Like, seriously? That's what bothers you in all this?
I didn't know about tattoos, both for TV and the military exemption. Interesting!
I was forewarned with off-screen narration, but not the modern day opening. Should I expect for things to re-emerge from the historical part at some point? If yes, does it form a subplot, or is is just a frame?
I'm kicking myself for not starting this gem sooner. The only drawback is a heavy use of flashbacks (especially when bingewatching) and an occasional superhearing (not paper walls, that I like). I assumed it's going to be gloomier and angstier from the get go, or have an awkward tonal shift somewhere in the middle, but everything goes so smoothly. Childhood arcs I usually just sit through and hope for them to not turn out to be better than the whole drama in the end, but this one was a great combo of adorable and ominous. It gives that feeling of being thrown headfirst into the story. Parents are precious (if only they settled their daughter with someone not related to royal family as soon as possible instead of sending her away, none of this would have happened, but shh). Characters are motivated, layered and somehow unpredictable. Even sidekicks are endearing.
I shipped the girl with both the King and the Crown Prince really hard, but the further I go, the more I just want for her and her family to be safe somewhere far away from both of them. Not gonna happen.
So this show was 34 episodes for me...end drop it!!!!!!!!!
I don't know whether you decided to read Claudia's comment below (not that spoilery too, by the way), so here's a spoiler free version re: going downhill or not. It's not a matter of a breaking point, but subpar writting from the beginning. Many matters could have been resolved way earlier, but were left hanging instead. Some plot-points appeared to establish something, but got abandoned later. Second leads have more character development that the main pair and especially KSH's character is a huge letdown (not acting, she's doing the best she can with what little she got). There's a double love triangle, but the outcome is set in stone very early (but not very convincingly). Production value is high, leads charismatic, villain captivating and the whole thing very engaging in a certain way, but as Claudia said, targeted primarily on younger(?) audience wanting pretty faces and angsty romance with a historical backdrop.
Hi, I see you wrote a few reviews of currently airing dramas recently. It's against MDL rules to review a show before it's finished. It's great you want to share your feedback with the community, but that's not how it works here. You may post anything you want in the comment section or on your private feed, or use the option of the episode review (either for every separate episode, or to cover the progress so far) instead. I hope you reconsider.
I don't know why the writer killed Hwa Gun. She is the only character of this drama that I still find interesting...…
I think L is doing well here too, his part really fits him and brings more of his skills than his former parts did. Plus, it's probably simply more entertaining to work with than the real Crown Prince part, just as Hwa Gun is compared to Ga Eun. I really don't know what to make out of it, since I was so hyped for the cast and initial episodes but somehow it fizzled out. Maybe it is a matter of KSH age indeed? They aimed at this pure, youthful romance, and suceeded on not making people going on the age difference and all, but it fell flat.
i see a lot of comments bashing SSK's acting... this is my first time seeing her fill a role and i didn't…
She has a lot of haters. She's doing fine in historicals (both Deep Rooted Tree and Six Flying Dragons) and delivers bubbly personality in modern romcoms well (Girl Who Sees Scents, Blademan). If people hated her character in Fashion King and When A Man's In Love, that means she was doing a good job, because her characters there weren't supposed to be likable at all. People sometimes don't differentiate between acting and writting and blame the actor, because it's the most visible part. Some roles suit her more, some less, and maybe she landed straight as a main actress a little too early in her career, but she's nowhere as bad as people make her to be.
How much do they go into the ceramic stuff? Do you think a clay artist would find this interesting to watch?
I haven't finished it, but from the 1/4 I saw pretty much actually! It's more than just a backdrop, there are many scenes with hunting for a good clay and sourcing it, many explanations on different types of clay and what to use it for, some plots with proper baking (is it a good word? sorry) and stealing precious vases IIRC etc. The girl is a daughter of a great artist and she learns the craft too, she's surrounded by other ceramicist. Huge part is a love triangle and political intrigue, but it's definitely worth checking out for art too. I often see it compared with The Painter of the Wind.
(I can't speak for the accuracy though.)

come on, she was bound to die. Now it's only a matter of how deranged fake king can get and whether he'll make it out alive or not.
I don't know about you, but I fail to connect with the main couple and the whole 'I'm not worthy to be a king' whining we got yesterday was just annoying. I'll finish it since I came so far, but what's more to expect? Pyunsoo is done with since they don't have poppies anymore. They can make a political purge among themselves, but what in the next 15 days? And next? (I can't believe they don't have seeds secured...) At this point I should probably care about all those officials who are about to die, but I just can't.
I hope for both Yoon Se Hee and Kim So Hyun to land good leading roles next time.
I guess with this drama... Ratings and reviews are going to be like 50/50 fans vs non fans..
grab some popcorn :D
50/50 is quite optimistic for now. But maybe the comment section will calm down once people who really don't like it at all find something they like instead.
