With all the trauma that ren susu and qingyi went thru from childhood til now, they are both messed up from it. The traumas left psychological effects on both of them to act and think the way they do. Being deprive of love and affection since childhood, qingyi have attachment issues that's why once he loves ren susu he couldn't let go. Ren susu was torture , starve, and was chosen a sex slave for the master huo but her friend MuLan save her and offer to switch ren susu place at the devil orphanage, there she learns to sacrifice for others even if it cost her. She thinks that keeping distance from qingyi is the best thing and it will protect him because trouble always find her.

Yes, I actually enjoy overdo dark theme with a touch of romance. It's not the typical cliché romantic republican drama, I find overdo storyline unique in it's own way.

This is my take from my understanding. Ren susu clearly loves qingyi, hence she tried to protect him many times. She loves him but don't want trouble to find him, so she choose to keep distance and only love him from afar thinking that's the best and will keep him safe. Unknowingly, keeping distance from qingyi is what hurts him the most. Ren susu has been broken since young and was on the path of revenge, she's fighting her demons. Her friend MuLan inspired her to sacrafice herself to save others. She is not good at expressing her love and that becomes an inner conflict too, since she likes to keep things to herself.

Everyone have their own opinion and their own preferences but for me, eventhough there's tradegy I still like the drama and wanted ren susu and qingyi to have a happy ending. Due to misunderstanding one after another they supress their feelings even though they still clearly love and miss each other. With everything that they've been thru, a happy ending will serve as a redemption for me, if it's a sad ending for ren susu and qingyi then i will enter my villian arc 😝
