they filmed in Guangdong, Macau and some parts of HK if I'm not mistaken that's why they are both speaking mandarin…
Ohh interesting!

Currently at episode 6. Some random thoughts:
- Is it just me or does the main actor really have an uncanny resemblance to Lee Je Hoon? I keep having flashbacks to Signal (although the two dramas are very different, of course)
- With the vast amount of time-loop dramas out there, it’s cool to come across one that still manages to put a twist on this genre.
- Is the drama set in China or Hong Kong? I feel like I hear both Mandarine and Cantonese?
- Everything works great so far, but the music could be toned down in certain scenes. The romantic or overly dramatic cues swell as if to instruct the audience when to feel emotional or sense a romantic shift. That’s the only minor thing that bothers me. Apart from that: this drama has been a lovely surprise so far!

I dropped this, so I’m still in the dark: why a fictional country?

A lot of my friends are from the Middle East und Muslims. Doesn’t make me an expert, but I choose to believe that US allies like South Korea (or anyone, really) shouldn’t portray Muslims as terrorists. That just fuels the hateful sentiments that people in the West have towards Middle Easterners. I live in the West and there’s a lot of racism and hate towards Muslims. I can’t support this.

Glad you enjoy the show. My reply was for OP who wanted to know if they’d enjoy this show if they prefer comedy and I expressed my opinion about how I believe this show to be far from funny, not enjoyable as a romance nor a political drama because of the inaccuracies. btw. the Iraq war is not the only issue here. The bomber who placed the bomb underneath Muju’s train seat was said to have been trained to build bombs in Iraq. That’s just not okay. You’re welcome to disagree, but I don’t understand the need to be so rude. Like, are you related to the actors and/or producers or are they paying you to defend their problematic script? Anyway, bye.

I disagree, even though I’m from neither of those counties. Iraq is portrayed as a barbaric country where terrorists are trained and China is shown to green-light a war right next to its border which it never would. It’s stereotypical orientalist portrayal for the former and a straight up inaccurate narrative for China’s foreign politics. You don’t need to be a patriot to take an offense because of that.

i hate political stuff unless its funny is this like good good or meh for someone like me
It’s not funny and so far it has managed to insult Iraq and China for inaccurate portrayal . It’s full of patriotism, which kind of irks me at a time when nationalism is not really getting us anywhere and people around the world should stick together rather than drift further apart. The romance is also misplaced and cheapens the plot further. The only bright side of it: it criticizes the world players for toying with entire countries for their own agendas.

Totally get why you’re confused! But I think perhaps you're looking at this too much thru a US political lens.…
When Munju talked to the current president the first time, her husband‘s campaign came up and how he focused on issues such as social isolation, climate change, gender equality etc. at first and hasn’t addressed people‘s fear of reunification sufficiently. That part confused me the most. You’re right though, I might be looking at it too much through a US/European political lens. In Europe, too, the Christian parties are always conservative. I just started wondering whether this drama is being sponsored by the conservative fraction trying to improve its image after the previous president caused a big scandal when trying to turn the country into a military regime. Then again, I’m not that well-informed about the differences in political landscapes in the West versus East Asia.

Yeah with „When the stars gossip“, I was utterly weirded out. I’m definitely going to keep watching this cause I love Jun Ji-Hyun. You’re right about the anti-US sentiments and drama referencing Trump in a rather unflattering way. South Koreans have actually started questioning their friendship with the US in recent years. That’s what confuses me, the drama is quite accurate at portraying the challenges of having to tiptoe around the US, Russia and China as a smaller state. But when it comes to the political scene in SK itself, the drama is super vague and confusing. What does the party Munju runs as a candidate for represent? Why doesn’t anyone want to join them if they’re democrats? Why do they need someone „woke“ to win over young voters and ditch him after their purpose was fulfilled? And why would Munju join them if they wouldn’t back up her goals (they clearly didn’t intend to with her husband). It’s not like becoming the president of a country allows you to do whatever you want. You not only become the face of a country, but the face of an ideology. Let’s wait and see.

I feel like with everything happening in the world, a political drama feeding into right-wing rhetorics would be the last think we need right now, that’s why I would like to have some transparency about where this is going. Is it about the corrupted mechanisms in politics and how a presidential campaign works? Is it about how big-players decide the fate of millions and the lengths they go to to stay in power? Or are we being served right-wing propaganda without noticing? I wouldn’t be surprised. Remember that embarrassing pro-life propaganda in „When the stars gossip“?

I’m aware this show isn’t trying to allude to actual parties (at least obviously), but I’m still curious: Is her husband from the Conservative Party or is he a democrat? Him being a devoted Christian, a patriot and nationalist AND an advocate for climate change, gender equality and a peaceful unification with NK just doesn’t align with the real political scene in South Korea or anywhere in the world, really. The protesters targeting him are anti-communism, but where is the world do they get the impression that he’s pro-communism? I’m confused about the political set-up here. Someone help me out please…

Rewatched some of my favorite scenes. I remember how much I loved the first part when this series aired back in 2023 and how disappointed I was with part two. The amount of angst and suffering that went on for an unbearably long time was just too much. But I still appreciate the beautifully written love story. The dialogues between Gil Chae and Jang Hyuk make my blood boil and my heart race and break for them. I love how the writer sprinkled a handful of lines repeatedly throughout the series and at the end, everything came full-circle. That’s some master-class storytelling. I wish I could watch the entire thing again, but I can’t take the overload of misery although I know the shows tries to portray a time period that was harsh and devastating…
