I will blame it on the 40 episodes max restriction. The Marquis was well fleshed out but little time was left…
I agree that the episode number restriction is part of the problem...
Even more than the last villain, I’m frustrated they didn’t give more development to Dongxia and the sect that took Zang Hai in. The latter was barely mentioned again after the first few episodes, and as for Dongxia, I thought the few episodes spent there were pretty bad and not enough to properly flesh out any of the characters.
But to be honest, I also wouldn’t have minded more episodes focused on the Marquis. When a character is that interesting and well acted, I just want as much of him as possible.
I adore long dramas, and knowing that a season 2 is in the works, I almost wish they had planned it from the start as an 80-episode drama split into two parts.

I would also really like them to give the remaining characters more ambiguous motivations. Otherwise I’m a bit afraid season 2 would turn into another "Zang Hai and his sidekicks save the world" story.
That being said, we don’t even know if the cast will return. And even if they do, it’s not necessarily going to be as the main characters, right? Isn’t it possible that season 2 could be about Zang Hai’s son or daughter or something like that?
I’m not sure how to feel about the season 2 announcement.
The drama was great, and there are still a lot of things left to explore in the story, so I should be excited.
But the biggest problem is that the first season kind of collapsed toward the end… no? Honestly, I feel like the show lost 50% of its appeal once the Marquis of Pingjin was gone. He was such a huge part of what made the drama so tense and interesting that the idea of 40 more episodes without him almost feels pointless.
There are too many antis rating 1/10 and to counter that fans will rate anything 10/10, so in the end it's all useless 🥲 very few people give genuine, unbiased ratings
