I think it's since demons are seen as inherently evil especially by the main sects in the drama. Like how XJ was surprised that Zi Hu (a fox demon) was able to fall in love / have feelings or how Ting Nu (the Merfolk) was seen as dangerous by XJ's dad just because he's a demon.
