The initial idea for this story actually came from Tian Jia Rui himself. It was inspired by two very different characters and story types he’s portrayed over the years: One was a cold-blooded assassin in Burning Night (燃霜为昼), and the other a man with multiple personality layers in the stage play Hello, Madman! (你好，疯子). Although these two characters differ greatly in tone and style, both roles allowed Rui to display remarkable emotional intensity and complex acting skills. That’s why we at ELLE+ wanted to create something that would truly showcase this emotional depth and dramatic tension through a visual story. To help flesh out the concept more completely, we started creating hand-drawn storyboard sketches. These served as visual references to translate the abstract concept in Rui’s mind into concrete imagery — helping us avoid the limitations that sometimes come with traditional scripts or production expectations. This collaboration was intense and efficient. We had almost no time for rehearsals or detailed script planning ahead of the shoot, so many creative decisions were made directly on set. Despite the fast pace and real-time adjustments, Rui’s professionalism truly stood out and left us impressed. Because the performance style required wasn’t the type of fully expressive, exaggerated acting — it called for restraint, emotional depth, and a sense of internal control — conveying the right feeling through Rui’s eyes, subtle facial shifts, and overall mood became crucial. Even in the dim lighting and tightly framed shots, his expressions were enough to tell the whole story. We tried various approaches to filming — not because the first take wasn’t good, but to explore if something even more powerful could be discovered. Rui was extremely cooperative. With every glance and subtle movement, he was deeply engaged in the creative discussion. Even when we only shot 2 or 3 takes, each one brought something fresh and unique. That’s the mark of a truly professional actor. The full shoot only lasted a little over an hour, but when we saw the final footage, we were genuinely amazed. This is what happens when a team of highly skilled professionals works silently and seamlessly — all sharing the same belief that "we must get this right," even under tight conditions.
