I feel like in the end it was the poor characterization of the characters which made the issues that I mentioned. Since there are so many characters introduced, and given screen time it really took away from actually having characters being fully fleshed out. We learn a little about each person, but the lack of backstory and motivations make the characters fall flat. I do believe that the supporting actors are the ones who actually gave life to the roles, and gave them their own personalities rather then the script actually doing them any justice. it was super evident watching them background act because they lent so much to the story building. I was super interested in Yu Ming since he brought such emotion to the story off the bat, and that friendship with LiCheng seemed to be important to each other so I was disappointed when he was seated tot he side. But I understand he is not a main lead and the CP needs to prevail lo.

I 100% do not look for advice but I know there are a large number of impressionable fans who look for their "Lu SiCheng" which makes romantic depictions more problematic.

Maybe I hate the trope and that is why I dislike the CP. haha i understand from an outside perspective they can be seen as caring and kind to one another, but it still erases the past and the power dynamic that comes into play with their positions on the team. I did realize that everyone did not seem to care about the way he treated her unless he treated her kindly then everyone else was confused since he was rude. now I am not sure if they said anything because he treated his teammates the same way. He only seemed to be open and communicative with Yu Ming. But since we dont know more about their friendship that is more of an assumption. And that side of LiCheng is just not shown again after Yu Ming is no longer front in center in the show, and turned to support. I do not think he was as cold as everyone says, but rather an introvert but he was rude to her for no actual reason rather then just being a bully. i dont like the way a lot of romantic relationships are presented in dramas, so I think I look into them when they are in my face. I guess I expect them to be realistic but I understand they wont be that way.

If u can say this then, i have to say this is for people who have fall in love hard enough and sometimes it make…
That does make sense when you look at it from that lens. You can tell that they fell hard (I’m not actually sure the amount of time in show that paces with them meeting and dating). I do believe that tong Yao did humanize him (even though it was shown he was human when it came to Yu Ming but he seemed to cold and stand-off-ish), and the relationship thing allowed that to be seen from his team.
I guess I’m looking it as a lens from an outside perspective rather then their emotions. But I think more logically when it comes to consenquences with any action so that is possibly why

When i read this comment, i only have 1 thing on my mind. It seems like you’ve been arguing alot with other…
Number one, I don’t hate the show. I am still watching it. And number two, everyone on the comments only praised the show. But when actual criticism about the show comes up everyone is quick to shun and defend. I actually want to have a convo about the show and what I get Out of it but all the comments are immense praises, so it does not allow me to do that. I never crap on the show, I do Not say rude things about the actors. So if me stating my own opinion and why I think the main CP is toxic is staring drama then that’s not my problem. I am allowed to go on this PUBLIC forum and talk about some things I dislike in the show. Especially when is going yo be drowned out by people talking about Xu Kai and the main CP. I have Not had fights on here, I could if I wanted, but I know It’s the not fans that made the show. Why can’t I have an ACTUAL conversation about the show? Everyone criticized larger shows then this, and they allow it. But on here I can not. If my comment bothers you then scroll by. Don’t comment, my questions was for people who agreed with my sentiment, if nobody does then fine. I stand by my own opinions, and everyone has their own.

please dont come for me defending your CP I am just asking a question and seeing if anyone feels the same way. Does anyone else feel like the CP...is sort of toxic. He is the leader of the team, and he started to date the new girl. He treats her differently because she is a girl. (everyone states this). This is evident in the praise he gives her. everyone stated that he never complimented them when they started on the team (if a leader of my team complimented someone on the team because of a gender difference i would be annoyed since its strong bias, and bad leadership skills). and then the kiss at the match that got them in trouble. He did not ask her if she wanted to go public. he did not ask her if he could kiss her. her eyes were literally open. I can not even imagine the HR nightmare that Yu Ming and Xiao Rui have to go through. You saw in there eyes they want to support their friends but it hurts the team, and neither of them feel too guilty about it. I am just confused. Cheng cared so much that Tong Yao thought about the team and not herself after her 1 game suspension, but when it came to publicly announce the relationship right before the finals, after the team already had so much backlash and scandal its make no sense. It just feels like a weird power dynamic. You should not date your boss essentially and that is what he is. He is her senior. Like one of them would not date Yu Ming nor Xiao Rui. Actually nobody should date each other on the same team, that seems like a very bad idea.

previously i had decided not to watch this show but wow 8.7!! its that good!?one question... is the gaming part…
it slightly has its own importance, in later episodes the romance takes a large part of the episodes and then they sort of intermingle. as someone who hates romance shows, the brotherhood of the team does hold its own if you skip through any romance scenes like i do. lol i watch it more for the sports side and the supporting characters but the sports side is more of a side plot compared to the importance of the relationship between the main leads.

i feel you on this. the main plot is filled with tropes and it's just not enjoyable to watch. maybe it's because…
i think there is a good amount of people in the comments who are willing to criticize the show, but there also seems to be a large amount of people who give it a 10, and believe it to be perfect. i dont think any show is perfect by any means, and there can always be room for improvements, rather all of these comments are about the actors (xu kai fans are a reason for these type of fans, as well since Cheng Xiao was an idol a lot of her fans came over too).. But a lot of these comments are more praising and waiting for episodes rather then actually having a discussion about it. From what I see. There are too many comments here (I have no idea why) so genuine criticisms get lost in the sea of "xu kai is so cute" (nothing against him).

i think they realized that they lost their mainland china fans so they moved to international fans. when they show was being produced in 2016 many people were against it because of what you mentioned before. Because of this, many people started to boycott it before it was even given an air date. so youku i think realized they needed to reach their international audience. while i heard the novel was the same way (the novel is the core issue, since the issues began with the inception of the story, and the author denying all allegations) . that is why i believe that grabbed kpop groups, and big Chinese names to do the ost for the show. and for english dubbing all of the trailers, behind the scenes, interviews and more. i always come in here and put my two cents in lol. i ahve gotten into fights because of my opinion so dont be deterred by the fans, real or fake. we also have our opinion, so if we think the show is bad lol then it is bad in our eyes. i think the show has a good foundation but the romance ruins it. especially in later episodes when the games for the championship gets 5 mins screentime and a romantic scene gets 20.

edit: i also apologize for my long-winded rants about it lol. i disliked the show since the first
episode but only stuck with it for the one actor because he deserves the views. so i have been very critical on here and on youtube about it lol

No one is bothered by the fact that GaOn lives and/or go as he please from Yo Han’s house, without a proper…
I think he moved in. He does not go back to his home anymore, so I think Kang allowed him to stay. It allows him to keep an eye on him since he was suspicious of his intentions. As well, Ga On being present seems to be a good thing for Elia. It shows he is really present because the "alexa" device calls him Master, and he knows his way around the kitchen. He also seems to be wearing clothes given to him by Kang. In the one scene, he put on house slippers, that 100% were not his because they looked expensive. Bascically Kang is his sugar daddy HAHAHAAH

i have spoken to chinese fans and a lot of them have boycotted the drama because of these reasons. I was going to as well. i live in America but im very present on weibo so i saw what was happening before the drama aired. I am only watching it for yu mings actor, but i know it is doing MUCH better with international fans then china. which is why the douban score for the drama is 2.9 and MDL is 8.7. i have looked harcdore into it because i think it has the foundation to be a good e-sports drama, rather then a straight up romance drama. I do not think it deserves a 8.7, rather I think it is being spammed with high scores from international fans to "prove" to the chinese e-sports fans that its better then they think. while i do believe is it not.

i wish everyone gave love to the supporting cast as much as the leads. I frankly do not believe that the leads were that strong (not entirely on the actors, but the direction, scripts etc). I believe that the supports sometimes carried the scenes more, and delivered the comedy. But also the serious moments. It is more enjoyable if you watch the support cast in the back and watch them react to what's going on. I will also need to point out Yu Mings (Mi Re) scene in the first episode when he has to retire. And his and Lu Yue's (Yao Chi) acting when they spoke about the incident at the bar. I really appreciate the supporting cast, because they were in charge of world-building and creating a personality for the team and I believe that did amazing.

Is there any BL / Bromance in this or they all just worship God Ming as a friend? Only on episode 6
haha i was wondering the same thing. the looks that cheng and K gave ming confused me since i knew that it was a straight romance. but it seems they all really care for him. if anything there is a stronger relationship with yu ming and lu yue (they even have a character poster together) . and yu ming with xiao rui. as well, the relationship between lao k and lao mao is very couple-ish. watch gao han's music video for bright and you can see them there as well.
yu mings actor is mi re so maybe that all just think hes handsome and want to stare at him hahah

i feel you on this. the main plot is filled with tropes and it's just not enjoyable to watch. maybe it's because i dislike romcoms and anything with too much romance. but i enjoy watching the supporting cast more than anything else. i think the actors who play the rest of the ZGDX team outside of the CP are more natural. i don't dislike the lead actors, but the way they play the roles makes me dislike them. i feel like there is no real plot since they spoiled them winning with the posters they released so it makes no sense of urgency in the show. even with the CP getting together, you know they do because of all of the posters kissing. it makes the show super predictable and not enjoyable when you know everything that happens will end in happiness. and yea i guess that's why its a light-hearted drama, but i agree with you. I do not find it cute nor funny, just annoying. i will watch it to support one of the actors, but its something i would recommend to others lol

im not a fan of the romance drama and i prefer strong platonic relationships. so i am upset that the romance in the drama turns me away from this drama, because the support cast for ZGDX is amazing. they have such a natural way of being together that the cast feels like they have been friends for years. ill look into kings avatar though as well as Go Go Squid!

just posting to say that im still in love with the rest of the ZGDX team outside of the CP. They have such a natural relationship that it makes it believable they were friends for years. I truly love watching the Yu Ming, Xiao Rui and Lu Yue scenes. Im only on episode 16 since I do not care enough to buy VIP but I am watching for this strong brotherhood on the teams.

i feel the same. i started for the actor of yu ming (mi re) because I believed he played a larger part in the show. I watch it but I skip A LOT so i only watch the matches and more team focused moments. as a female gamer i was kind of disappointed with her characterization. i understand liking someone that you work with, but I know that dealing with the game and the profession is more important then the crush. i want to support yu mings actor so thats the only reason I watch and give views. K is also a nice character, and I wish he had more screen time.

i love the supporting cast, and prefer them then the main CP. the relationships and the friendships on ZGDX outside of the CP feel realistic and raw. I especially love the friendship between Yu Ming, Xiao Rui and Lu Yue. After the harsh start for Yu Ming in the show, I am happy to see him smiling and laughing with his friends. I also love the friendship that Lao mao and Lao K have (if you have not watched the music video "bright" for the show yet, plz do it has them both and it is amazing)
