so I think the backdrop was the battle for the throne between the emperor and ml's father; emperor won. normally as a new emperor he would be cautious and warry or all his oppositions (ml's father, ml's maternal grandfather/uncle who controlled the entire army) whether warranted or not. emperor struck a deal with ml's father to set up ml's maternal grandfather/uncle by provoking them to rebel. this way ml's father can rid himself of a strong ally and prove he's not a threat to the emperor, otherwise emperor would have to kill him lol.

that's how the entire army was defeated over night, the emperor knew their plans to rebel all along because it was his idea.

that's why I think both of them don't want the secret to get out. they pretty much killed an entire army because the emperor wanted control and rid of potential threats.
