i'm sorry to say this because it will sound dismissive, but truly I don't mean it that way. i think you're putting too much feelings into what happened with the cancelling of the engagement. from my view, the two families were well aware of what was going down and each made their own decisions. i see it simply as a procedural step, it had to be done to create distance from the shen because they were not choosing the path of survival. we can't keep harping on why the lins didn't stick around longer. the main issue is the shens strapped cement blocks to their feet and jumped into the lake. sorry if I stay on land because i'll 100% die too otherwise..

idk, I don't see it as them being "heartless". they respected their decision is all. if we try putting everything under a microscope looking for stuff, we're bound to find something.

i stand by my interpretation that both the families were well informed and chose different paths. the shens chose to die and the lins chose survival. nobody left anybody when crisis struck, they both knew and had a choice to make imo.

nah everyone knew what was up, jinqi wanted to go persuade the shens.. not tell them what was going on. we know shen grandfather already knew because we saw what he was writing just before getting taken away. can't remember clearly but it was something similar to "no regrets" iirc

also shen grandma already had her poison bottle prepared. like the shen elders knew what was coming and they were just planning to die. we even hear shen grandma admitting in the prison cell.. they were hoping to die themselves and didn't expect then entire fam to go down. which was idiotic thinking because it's common to punish an entire family back then. death for male and female to music hall aka prostitution

I don't think there was any "betrayal" at the beginning of the story. the Shen family (shen grandfather specifically) made their choice and got what was obviously coming. mind you, both family had the same decision to make, it wasn't just the shens were in trouble and the lins "abandoned" them. it was either death or do what Lin grandfather did, which was retired and move away from the capital to appease the emperor.

chatgpt says they have a son. but later in the story the Du sister becomes leader of the pirates and kills marguis yuan during one of their battles. then xinru somehow kills Du sister for revenge.

the lins didn't break off the marriage just to marry someone else. the lin and shen grandpas were part of the group of officials who had advised the previous emperor to prosecute the princes or w/e. the current emperor was one of those princes so he was looking to punish those officials at the start of the show. the shen grandpa wanted to make a political point/stance I guess; claiming he had done nothing wrong and has no regrets which resulted in the death of his clan. the lin grandpa broke off the marriage to create separation and also retired to appease the emperor so his family could survive.

yup that's why i love it. i can't stand the shows where logic completely pauses to let a FL with lowly social status just run amuck and do/say stuff with no regards to the societal rules and consequences of the era they are in. like if they were not the FL character.. heads would've rolled 10x in a couple eps lol

I can't even recall another drama where a slave/servant FL shows "appropriate fear", an oddly simple thing but we've seen too many FL in servant roles just talking nonsense and doing nonsensical stuff(especially towards ML) just bc they have plot armor as FL.
