heedo and yurim are seriously PRIMED for an enemies-to-lovers sports anime romance T_T
i always end up wishing female leads would end up together but it is so real this time lol... bona and kim taeri are so cute together behind the scenes and now in the drama too.
Its pathetic actually. How dramas like this show the male lead as some sort of God that needs to be worshipped…
although i really really enjoy this drama, i absolutely agree. and whether the drama intends to send a message about gender or not, it ultimately ends up reinforcing misogynistic thoughts without viewers realizing it. it's really unfortunate. if the drama landscape were more balanced in terms of some presenting women as the "godlike" one, it wouldn't be so obvious, but the fact is dramas rarely if ever do that. and even if the woman is rich, the man is either also rich or still presented as "better" than the woman in many ways.
ngl ep 7 had me a little heated but im really happy with the groundwork laid in ep 8 for heedo & yurim's relationship going forward. can't wait for next week!!
Hm, it's been interesting to read people's thoughts on the Yurim-Heedo situation. I kind of feel they're both…
exactly!! they're perfect foils of each other. i can't wait to see how their relationship shifts, because they could be just what the other needs in a friend if they start opening themselves up to each other.
Yup I don't her at all, plus I know people here are all ranting about sportsmanship and everything but they keep…
hm.. i see what you call a scene as someone processing their emotions. would it have made things easier for everyone if she'd dragged herself off the court and cried in the locker room? sure. but i give her some leeway bc i think it's understandable to shut down and lose your view of what's "best" when all you can think of is how you failed.
and i say lose her career because that's literally what she's afraid of. she says it in the truck with her dad. obviously it's not rational—of course, this is just one match, and of course, silver is still a huge honor. but she's not thinking like that, and i don't blame her. she's been told that if she loses, she loses her fame, the federation's backing, etc. all of which she views as her family's only ticket out of their financial situation. she believes she quite literally cannot afford to lose. i wasn't saying that she should never lose—im just trying to share what i think is her perspective, as alluded to by the writer/director. is her perspective the right one? nope, because no one's is; it's all perspective. does she have some maturing to do? of course, and a lot of it. but i think her fears, though irrational, are still understandable. they don't excuse her shitty behavior to heedo, but the /explanation/ they provide for them makes me see hope for future character growth. she's not an asshole for no reason, she just needs to work through her issues.
sorry for the essay lol but i think where we're at with this drama is that some people are going to identify with yurim's struggles and will empathize with her, while some won't or maybe just can't overlook her brattiness to heedo. and that's fine. but i do feel some of the comments against yurim (not necessarily yours) are a bit much, and that makes me defensive of her.
Yup I don't her at all, plus I know people here are all ranting about sportsmanship and everything but they keep…
sure, but isnt the best time to appeal a call right after the call has been made? you wouldn't wait until after the match is over, you appeal immediately. and yurim was correct; appealing a call is an athlete's right. it's poor sportsmanship to appeal a clearcut call, but in this case the touches were incredibly close. if one athlete feels the call was wrong in such a scenario, it's understandable that they would appeal right then and there. and to be honest, i think heedo would've done the same if the call went in yurim's favor. i think any athlete would've, with something that close. the fallout after the appeal is the media's fault, not either of the girls, although neither handled it well.
i also don't think yurim "made a scene" to get attention. i think she is a frustrated teenager who feels like she might lose her career and thus her and her family's place in the world. athletes in the real world cry and get frustrated at themselves and the results of their efforts when they're not satisfactory. i think it's totally reasonable to respond that way. maybe it's not ideal etiquette, but these aren't robots, they're people. more than that, they're KIDS. doesn't matter if they're olympians. you don't lose all your emotions bc you get some media training and a medal.
maybe this is a hot take but personally, the amount of intense hate over yurim's character is weird to me? like…
100% agreed. on top of that, she (as a teenager!!) seems to be at least partially shouldering her family's financial situation. that's an insane amount of pressure added to all the other weights piled onto her. and despite having the loving parents heedo doesnt have, yurim still seems to be lacking an outlet, someone she can truly share her struggles with. jiwoong might end up being that for her if their relationship develops past cute flirting, but i could also see that being heedo—if yurim will stop shooting herself in the foot and being awful to her, ofc.
Yup I don't her at all, plus I know people here are all ranting about sportsmanship and everything but they keep…
yeah the sportsmanship/professionalism comments are a little funny to me because they literally are just two competitive teenagers. like has no one been in high school PE?? kids are crazy. i also don't believe heedo would've acted any differently than yurim did if the ref had called yurim's touch first instead. i think yurim is in denial and because of that she legitimately believes she won, so of course she's going to defend that; she has to, or else her entire perception of herself and her future comes crashing down.
I agree with you one hundred percent. I really hope things turn around very quickly because if not I think I'm…
yuppp. this episode took me 2.5 hours to finish bc i kept pausing to rant to my roommate about the story structure lol. at the end of the day, yurim and heedo are foils of each other. their literal as well as figurative clashing is the best part of the drama imo, and the fact that that clash has thus far been shown only from one side is a little disappointing. there's so much more to work with if we pull back a bit and give time to both girls.
a little disheartening to see how many people are not in yurim's corner at all lmao... i think she's very easy to sympathize with and root for (just like heedo!), but her character doesn't get the same chance to be viewed as a real, feeling person.
that's a shame, especially bc the writer and director give us little clues about her character that imo add up to a really captivating and complex person. but she's been absolutely awful to heedo, so i do understand the hate. i just think in flat out hating her instead of trying to work out where she's coming from, you're missing out on a really interesting character.
I don't know how many ppl sympathise with ko yu rim but her behaviour after the match was 200% unprofessional…
bc shes an easily sympathetic character if you stop to look at things from her perspective. but YOU as an individual viewer have to do that; it's not presented to the audience the way heedo's perspective is, so a lot of people dont, which is totally understandable. im not surprised a lot of people dislike yurim bc this is heedo's story and we see 99% of yurim's character through heedo—and yurim is awful to heedo. she has a lot to work through re: her hostility to heedo and where it comes from, but that's not her entire character.
the drama alludes to the reasons behind yurim's behavior but never does more than that, so you end up with some people who hate her and some who empathize with her (me lol). i won't get into it more since i could write a paper on this, but the pieces are there for those who decide to pick them up and work out yurim's character. she just doesn't get a chance for that to happen onscreen in the story, because it's not her story.
I honestly believe that Yurim and NDH will become bestest of friends and Kim Min Chae might be daughter of Yurim…
yup i've been wondering if minchae is actually yurim's kid too.. but there's so much going on in the past timeline that my brain won't let me think about what's going on in the present lol
wow i didn't really have any expectations for this but that first ep was so damn good. i love how they lean into the over the top webtoon romance thing with the animations and huge props to the actors (especially the two girls!!!) for absolutely selling it. really really looking forward to the rest.
