If you love MZY you will see that every character she plays is different from one another. Dou Zhao, Jiang Taohua and Shen Xihe are very different. Add Mei Chaofeng on the list bcos it was released around the same time. If you can't see the differences it means you don't understand their characters, only see them as cold calculative FL. No, this script/novel is actually very good. I fell in love with novel that I read it 3 times. The story building and character growth are great. The FL is realistic and unconventional, not a goody pure one. The ML is physically weak, uses his brain to work his way up. Story about princess and poor scholar is rare in cdrama, it is always prince/general and noble lady.

Another reason is bcos kids nowadays don't appreciate Qing dynasty styling. They think the men look ugly and hideous. I grew up watching My Fair Princess and although the men look funny, it is NOT unwatchable. Tbh some of the masterpiece drama came from Qing dynasty.
