The novel actually explained more as to why Song Mo isn't close to his father.

First, Song Mo has been excellent literary and military, he is fast in learning, smart, outstanding child. He won in archery and hunting when he was 5 and 9 y.o. He is extremely favored by the emperor, he even lived in the palace from time to time. His uncles helped raised and trained him.

The previous Duke Ying thought Song Yichun iw incompetent, so he tried to pass his title to Song Mo. Song Yichun knew this and his hatred to Song Mo grew. Jiang family is very strong and influential and the late Duke forced Song Yichun to marry Madam Jiang to control Song Yichun. Song Yichun never liked Jiang family nor Madam Jiang.

Bcos Song Mo is so brilliant and better than him, Song Yichun is scared and jealous. He wants to get rid of Song Mo, but he couldn't bcos of Madam Jiang. He wants Song Han to inherit his title bcos he can be controlled, unlike Song Mo. Song Mo isn't close to Song Yichun.

Reason why he killed Song Yichun and Song Han in the first lifetime?

Song Yichun had been poisoning Madam Jiang. Song Han knew about this when he was 11 and knew the secret about his birth. So he helped poisoned his mother. But he told lies to Song Mo. Dou Zhao not only saved Song Mo's life, but also changed his fate. She encourages him that life is not always so bad. She herself went through a lot. Song Mo is still the gentle and kind Song Mo, doesn't become the executioner like in the past life.

Thanks to Dou Zhao, Song Mo finds out the truth about Song Yichun, what caused Madam Jiang's death, the truth about 14 years ago, Song Han's birth, and how Song Han participated in killing Madam Jiang when he was 11 and had been pretending to be a good didi. As they continuously failed to kill Song Mo, they then allied with Prince Qing to rebel.

Song Mo also finds the truth about Duke Ding's death thanks to Dou Zhao and Chen Jia.

Song Mo has been an upright, gentle, kind, and smart boy bcos he was raised by Jiang family. If he was raised by Song Yichun, he will be like Song Han, evil to the bones and incompetent.

Song Mo and Wu Shan are friends. De Zhen is his courtesy name. Just like Yan Tang (Song Mo). Usually when a man has gained courtesy name, he will be called by his courtesy name instead of his birth name. Calling his birth name can be considered rude or not close. Dou Zhao still calls Ji Yong as Ji Yong or cousin Ji, instead of Ji Jianming, but it is bcos she chose not to call his courtesy name and Ji Yong doesn't mind.

In the novel, Dou Zhao was able to delay her marriage with Wei Tingyu bcos she knew his father would die. So the engagement was put on hold for 3 years. During this time, she met Song Mo. He lost his mother and mourned for 3 years. Dou Zhao was 17 and Song Mo was 16 when they got married.

Miao Ansu and Song Han will get married. Ji Yong remains unmarried bcos he only loves Dou Zhao and looks down on other women.

In the interview, Li Yunrui said Song Mo had a dream where he is alone in the dark. But there is someone holding a lantern. This person is Dou Zhao and since then she became his love. So the scene you mentioned is a dream. They are fated in this lifetime.

For the last one it is actually "if I'm still alive, I will come to find you". Perhaps it happens during the coup. He has to go to the castle to protect the emperor.

The novel ends in a very happy note. She is pregnant with their second child. They have a son who is around 3 y.o. and bcos Song Mo is favored by the emperor and empress dowager, Dou Zhao becomes acquainted with the royal family members, including crown prince and crown princess.

The drama mentioned Dou Zhao is 23. 23!??!? 23 + 3 = she will be 26 by then??? Tbh that is impossible in that era to remain unmarried.

The empress, Prince Qing, eunuch Wang Ge, Duke Ying, Song Han are the villains in the novel.
Ji Yong and Song Mo hate e/o bcos Song Mo married Dou Zhao whom he loves. They are still at odd until the very end, but he helps Song Mo suppressing the coup.

I think they accuse her of doing something bcos they found bloody cloth. It is after she helped wounded Song Mo. Wu Shan comes and says that cloth is his.

It's funny bcos the SML is Ji Yong and not Wu Shan 😅

What's with the "let's torture Dou Zhao bcos we like it"??? 😡 Thankfully Wu Shan comes to help her.
I really hate how:
1. They made Dou Shiying a useless father.
2. Wang Yingxue roams freely like a cockroach.
3. Dou Shishu as evil character.

Dou family is supposed to be warm, honest and close to e/o. Dou Zhao is very close to them, esp with her father. Also her father confided Wang Yingxue in her room to prevent her harming Dou Zhao.

Finally we come to "the death of beloved mother" part 😭
This is the turnover for Song Mo.
But in this lifetime, Dou Zhao helps him. This will also change his fate.

Actually in the novel she explained it clearly:
She wants to change her fate in this lifetime. She didn't expect to meet Song Mo bcos in the previous life, they didn't meet in her farm. She helped him with the orphan to save the Jiang family members bcos she knew Duke Ding is destined to die. Not really. Her part is the prequel to Legend of Heroes main story. You don't have to watch all 5 parts. The prequel will air around summer 2025. But if you want to see her as the villain, watch Legend of Heroes until ep 18. Tbh that drama is not good, but Meng Ziyi is the reason people watched it. She really stole the highlight since ep 1.
