The focus of the show was not so much about the couples (and who ended up together) but their individual abilities to heal and move forward after traumatic events. I especially liked that all the characters were good people. K-dramas are rife with evil mothers-in-law, the overbearing and abusive parents, jealous siblings and colleagues, etc. Even the supporting characters were lovely. Very refreshing - I’d like to see more like this.
NY purposely stalked the Han family, with “coincidental” appearances - is this going to be revealed? Another huge plot hole, despite the extended series. This is one big frustrating mess.
I think the writer needed the extra episodes to rework NY’s fate. Viewers would have gone crazy with an “all is forgiven” redemption arc, which was probably the original plan. Having her committed to a private mental institution, paid for by the Hans’, gives NY a soft landing without being forgiven per se. HS gets divorced and custody. Mari heals by helping to raise her two grandchildren.
Personally, I prefer to see NY thrown out in the street with nothing but the clothes on her back, but this is a family drama, which oddly enough was described by KBS as “heart-warming and healing.” Do you think they can squeeze in some heart-warming and healing content into the last 150 minutes of a 3,840 minute drama? I’m still waiting.
Regarding the comments about everyone getting pregnant - the extremely low birth rate in S Korea needs to be remedied - even if it’s only in K Dramaland. 🤣
One of many unanswered questions: Where did an unemployed NY get the money to move into the apartment across the hall from HS, join a yoga studio and buy ingredients for expensive meals? My theory is she extorted money from the director claiming the baby is his (which it probably is). If not the director, someone else she duped using the pregnancy.
JT is an unforgivable character especially since he does know right from wrong and he continues to do wrong! For 30 freaking years, JT watched his wife suffer excruciating pain over the loss of a child, tried to convince her the child was dead, tried to convince his son and others that MaRi was mentally unstable and did everything in his power to keep a child from reuniting with his mother. This is not a man you want by your side - ever - under any circumstances.
Ironically, K-Dramas in general, not just this one, find any intimacy between consenting adults somehow scandalous yet are happy to show extreme intoxication, abandoning children, and plots to murder or denigrate one’s siblings, etc., acceptable at the 7:30 hour!
After 112 excruciating episodes of evil winning out over decency, we better get a huge payday at the end of this series. Nothing short of JT, NY and YJ getting exiled to a remote island, with only the clothes on their backs, will appease me at this point. No redemption. In the interim, WR will be furious with his mother for taking NY’s word on the cheating allegations and use it as an excuse to move back to the Courtyard House. Wishful thinking, perhaps.
I hope the writers don’t go with a miscarriage. It would allow NY to once again play the victim card. Too much woe is me. I’d like her to go to the hospital as a result of this latest episode and through tests, to determine the health of the fetus, they learn that HS is not the bio dad. This is the only way to permanently cut her out of their lives.
Since it was ages ago, I bet many of the viewers have forgotten that the so-called FL was once the most sought after and accomplished academy teacher in all of South Korea. So while the writers have been providing ridiculous redemption arcs and allowing the lesser characters to “grow,” they have done a 180 and turned the FL into the most insipid human being. Maybe the writers will allow her to take over the senior school if the principal retires. To the writers - give her something, please.
The writers of this drama must be among the most miserable and depressed people in the entertainment business. In 110/121 episodes, is there a single character who is happy or enjoying life? One would have to be completely and hopelessly despondent to write these episodes. Seriously, these writers should be on a suicide watch. They have created an ensemble of misery. Eleven episodes is not long enough to turn this around.
Also, does anyone recall seeing proof the marriage was legally registered? I am hoping it wasn’t - which would make a cleaner break.
Did you catch the name of the fake nun? Sounded very much like the uncle’s former girlfriend who befriended YD. I am thinking, JH, “Nun” and WH could have met at an orphanage and the “Nun” is assuming the identity of WH to scam the grandmother. I absolutely refuse to believe the so-called nun and JH are related to the Gong family. Much more likely, WH is the granddaughter.
