The director didn't call KHY ugly-his quote was poorly translated/ the PD didn't phrase it properly.
He was talking about the original Sol that was imaged by the previous director. It wasn't that the character was ugly but the original look really didn't help sell why exactly did Sanjae fall irrevocably in love with her.
You can see snippets of her original look in the 2007 flashback of when Sol first saw KTS/ Taesung's birthday song video. What he says makes sense when you see the deleted scenes they had to reshoot (like their iconic passport photo pic).
The reshoot versions of Sol and even Sunjae are way better so it kind of makes sense what he meant (though he could have said it better)
It's been awhile since i last read it but it was good for the most part. It's abit cheesy at times but I didn't mind it (kind of like how some might call Soljae cheesy but we don't care)- nothing super cringey though.
If i have to give a vibe, it's a bit like Shooting stars since it deals with a top star actor and a struggling actress. The main villain is her ex but that story isn't dragged so it's good.

He died 3 times officially (original timeline+ after the first timejump after taesung's confession in ep 4 i think+ in 2009).
While he doesn't die after the attack in ep 8, it's implied that his condition is critical/ grave so anything could have happened after he fell into a coma 🙊
I saw threads on Twitter to cancel it (when the airing dates where announced) because it was based on "kim j0nghyun"…
If it helps, all these rumours died down after ep 2-5 were aired once the main plot twist was revealed.
The misunderstanding is mostly there because the plot summary/ initial promotion is a bit misleading depending on how your look at it (the true story is part of the main plot twist so you can't really mention it on the plot summary).
Interestingly enough, now some complain because they didn't follow the plotline they accused was similar toJonghyun's story🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️

The driver is a psycho/ serial kidnapper/ killer who targets young girls (or that's what it's implied). Sol was just unlucky in the previous timelines to cross his path in 2008.
That's why in the last timeline, the driver didn't know about Sol and knew SJ only as a celebrity.

Since you sound like you have a lot of experience with jdramas, i just checked out your watchlist a few hours back and came across "Haru" (no idea why but the name just stood out). Boy am I glad I noticed it because It was so brilliant (and still so relatable even if it's been 27 years)!
