She probably has no skills and little education. She is rural woman who got lucky marrying a Shanghainese. Honestly for me she could take a cleaning job if they are struggling that much. That engagement scene bothered me so much and now i hate the whole Mai family. A bunch of enablers always spoiling that nasty woman.
This is a comment for people wanting to start The Story of Minglan a drama that is really long, something that makes people reluctant to give it a try, but extremely rich in terms of cultural and historical portrayal. If i have to describe the story and its main theme, i would compare it to Jane Austen books, it focus on the dependance of women on marriage, social position, economic security and self discovery.
The drama will show you everything from family discussions, palace rebellions, matchmaking making tea, arranging flowers, reciting poetry etc. A lot of those things might seem unnecessary but this realism is the charm of Story of Minglan .

I normally dont like dramas that look too much like animes.It feels too cartoonish. I didnt like Burning flames either but tĥis just a matter of taste. I love The legends despite the ending he was such a sweet puppy 😭😭 I think people watching The Legends and Falling into your smile can see that Xu Kai can transform as a character. He is also super good looking so that helps 🤣😉
