I think it will be longer than 2023 to see JOL2 given it took 7 months to do JOL1. Given they will be filming JOL2 and JOL3 together..I am guessing it will take at least 1 year to finish filming. Then you add the typical 1 year needed for historical dramas post production, getting approved past the censor board, and marketing and distribution then 2023 is the earliest but most likely be 2024.

Production team originally announced they plan to begin filming in 4th quarter which means anytime in October, November, or Dec of this year, However the date has been pushed back because the current film project JOL 2 director has been working on (a different drama) which expected to wrap up filming this 4th quarter has now been extended to the end of this year due to change in FL. Thus JOL 2 Director won’t be able to start JOL 2 until beginning of next year. Beyond the drama team not wanting to completely repeat the novel, the biggest drivers of changing the plot and even our ML personality is due to China censorship which restricts characters esp ML/FL characters from having too big / much of a dark side or character flaws. As someone who has completely finished reading the entire novel, one can’t really see the novel and drama as the same. So yes...although major plot points will “hopefully” be loyal to the novel there will still be a lot of differences. Also...adapting a novel to film will also require some modifications to be made. For example one of the main cast members (I won’t say who to avoid revealing spoilers) actually disappears into the background and has only a minor role after the 1/2 way point of the novel...but because that character is so loved by audiences the drama team will probably find a way to extend their presence/importance all the way to JOL 3.
