Having seen nearly iteration of this drama from different decades and countries, including the earlier Korean version “Untold Scandal,” sadly, this is the remake no one needed.
All three actors were miscast in their roles. Nana looks way too modern and sophisticated to be believed as a pathetic, quivering virgin. I love Ji Chang Wook in modern roles, but I do not care for him historical roles. I mean, the caterpillar growing above his upper lip is a turn off right from the get go. That said, he still does have the sexiest upper lip in the business :)
Son Ye Jin did not portray the malevolent and manipulative Lady Cho at all well. I kept waiting for her evil to come out, but it sadly didn’t make much of an appearance till the last episode (see: Glenn Close in “Dangerous Liaisons”). I put this blame squarely at the feet of the writers and most importantly the director.
Save yourself six hours and watch the two-hour movies mentioned above instead!
