If you are talking about why XL is the only one feeling pain, it’s because he is blocking his pain from reaching her. Xuan also loves her, in his own way and she loves him. But remember the walnut hasn’t disappeared after she planted the bug on Xuan. It hasn’t planted itself very firmly and that’s why she was able to take it out. But the walnut disappeared once XL willingly taken the bug in himself.

I have logged in IMDB to have a look at the ridiculously low rating as someone mentioned here in comments. There are some nasty reviews, talking about Yang Zi being mediocre in looks and acting. I think she’s never been very honest with her feelings to XL, he is a very complex character after all. The novel contain a lot more detail than the show. She never feels his feelings even since she has the bug, he is blocking her from it. He is super strong when it comes to his powers and she is weak. She keeps all the things he has done for her secret and it’s not easy to love someone like that. It’s easier to love Jing, he wears his heart on his sleeve for her. So does she love him? If she didn’t then she would have the Heartbreak bug in her and not the Lovers bug. I think here is where the answer lies.

From the novel the Voodoo King explained to XY that "Lover's Bug, like its name indicates is a pair of male-female voodoo bugs. The couple who has the bug successfully planted will have their life and emotions connected. If one hurts then the other will hurt. If one is injured then the other will also be injured."

The Lover's Bug keeps two people's lives connected, which means when one is injured as long as the other is healthy then then injured person will survive. This is a very good thing. From reading the novel, I can tell you he won’t die anytime soon. He is one of the most important people of the novel. Perhaps this drama isn’t for you.

Reading the novel, you realise how much he actually loves her and sacrifice for her. He will never tell. He is an amazing complex character and would be a true soulmate to her but they are both standing on opposite battlefields. Tushan Jing is a safe bet for her, but I think she is too safe for her character.

They are on the opposite sides and more will be revealed with time
