So, this may be kind of a hot take but I think a lot of the reasons season 2 has seemed over the top and jilted so far is because the screenwriter didn't really have anywhere to go, because Vincenzo really was essentially the Fiery Priest part 2.
I always call Fiery Priest a Vincenzo prototype (not in an insulting way), since they have a lot of similar characters, themes, and plot points. The big difference is Vincenzo has a higher production quality, and the writing feels more fleshed out. What I mean is that, the screenwriter took his experience from writing FP and made Vincenzo from that.
A sequel/season 2 should strive to be better than the original while still keeping the essence the same, but what do you do if you have already written that, just with different characters? Where do you go? You can't do the same thing again - people will notice, so really the only thing to do is get bigger. Which in this case, means exaggeration and excessive jokes and acting.
To me, there was never a need for a fiery priest 2 because as much as I loved the first one, the screen writer built upon it with Vincenzo instead. I think it will be very interesting to see where this goes, and I do not mean any offense to either of these shows, but it really does seem like the writer has used up a lot of the nuance that made Vincenzo and the Fiery Priest so loved.
oh man im not done but the urge to write a whole ass essay on this show and how its an allegory for the war. What Japan did to Korea, and how the lasting effects rooted its bones in this country. How it's never truly over, how even those who survive don't win. This show makes me go crazy the literary symbolism is soooo good
The shamanism is crucial, though, both in the time period (ancient civilization-for instance, the lore around…
Yeah, I know Shamanism is an important part of Korean history but I do think there are historical shows that have handled it way better - Moon Embracing the Sun for example. I think over all for me, there were a lot of interesting intentions and ideas in the show, they just weren't written well.
Well donne on your review. It's really well written, everything explained clearly and it is exactly what I think…
Yes totally agree! I think it such an odd thing to do to historical figures when there doesn't seem to be anything to back why they made those choices. Thank you for reading my review!
I know that story wise this isn't a show that was trying to copy Squid Game, since 1) Death Game has existed as a concept for a long time, and a lot of things that are similar between the two are because of that and 2) Money Game and Pie Game existed before the release of Squid Game, but I do think people who get a Squid Game vibe are valid, largely because a lot of the technical/show specific parts are similar.
Think things like the use of classical music against a contrasting scene (yes, I know this is a technique that exists, but it stuck out to me), costume design with number uniforms, the set design with the plasticity objects made to resemble something normally innocent (like an amusement part, or a children's game), the fake simulation of day and night and a vast communal area , - which is different from how it was conceptualized in the manhwa. It almost feels like a lot of creative decisions Netflix had say in they deliberately pushed so that it could generate hype by being compared to Squid Game.
I wouldn't be surprised if they did, it would make sense for marketing (literally look it up and you'll immediately get articles talking about the two), but it's a shame because it's actually quite different from Squid Game in a lot of ways. If people go in expecting Squid Game, they are going to be disappointed which I think is going to have an effect on the reviews.
I'm not that far in so I don't want to speak too much on this, and my opinion may change later (I'm not even sure if I like it at this point) but I did take a look at the manhwa/source material to make sure I wasn't making unfair comparisons. It really does feel like the production team was influenced by Squid Game. Or at least pushed by Netflix to be, even if the original story isn't tied to it in any way.
Begging Lee Soo Yeon to stick to writing realism. Shouldn't have given her a second chance at sc-fi after the mess that was grid. And we were doing so well too T^T
yall have to watch this movie with good subtitles - I beg you to wait until the official translation is available to make judgement. I watched this once online with meh subtitles and then luckily was able to see it in theaters and let me tell you it makes a world of difference. It's like an entirely different movie.
What a wonderful and comprehensive wrap up! Questions: 1) Fifty Six total - I think 37 from 2023 specifically 2) Top country was South Korea 3) Genres - Drama, Thriller, Action, Mystery, Romance are my top 5 4) My fave dramas of the ones listed in this article are Vigilante, Twinkling Watermelon, the Glory and Dr. Romantic Season 3 5) My top drama that's not listed here is Revenant. I gotta say I'm a little sad to see it beat out for the highest rated Horror Drama. That show is a masterpiece. So dark and atmospheric. My other one would be A Time Called You. 6) It had it's ups and downs! There were a lot of fun airing kdramas but I wish I had found more shows to binge watch. 7) Wish - really hoping to find some thriller kdramas that call back to the 2020/2021 era of shows like Kairos, Train, 365 etc... Also try to be more engaged in writing reviews and articles!
Wow your prediction 👏 👌 can u plz help me 😂 if yi jae is the office worker (the real ML) then why the…
He's not originally the officer worker! It's just another reincarnation he goes through. He is originally Yi Jae, the officer worker is his 11th life, it functions like all the other ones.
