Right now, you've got an assassin character who stole the body of somebody else without thinking about it twice…
How do you know she wasn't being abused? She told somebody at one point that he would always pick fights with her, then make a grand show of making it up to her (emotional abuse and lovebombing) – when she tried to break up with him (to make it not cheating), he wouldn't let her, and instead stalked her, threatening her father's job through his connections. Her father was an abusive personality too, and he kept her trapped in the relationship. Three is a diect parallel drawn between him and a physically abusive rapist. If none of this reads at remotely abusive to you, then I wonder what your normal is.

I never said I agreed they were cheating though. Just developing feelings for somebody else doesn't count as cheating to me, and I think it is understandable to develop feelings outside of the relationship when it comes to abuse and mistreatment. I agree that murder has complexity, and I think cheating does too. I agree rape is unforgivable, and I think One Spring Night is one of the rare dramas I've seen that depicts that in full honesty. I think it'd be a shame to write off a drama like Alchemy Of Souls for the murder when it's clear to us both that there's so much more to it, and I think it's similarly a shame to write off this drama because you've reduced it to a drama about a "cheating hoe", but I think that's more on you than anything the drama is trying to portray. It's your decision.

After dropping WTSG, I ended up witnessing another cheating hoe. Wtf is this doing in the suggestion page of Love…
Right now, you've got an assassin character who stole the body of somebody else without thinking about it twice in the first episode in your profile picture; no hate to either character, as I love both dearly, but imo I think that's a bit worse morally speaking than catching feelings for somebody else when pressured into in a relationship with a misogynistic emotional manipulator.

I get it if it's a dealbreaker, but I think there's a little room for complexity here, and I don't think the drama or recommendation is at fault if there's a part of the audience unable or unwilling to read into it.

Watching this with my parents, and my mother said, right in the middle of this episode "This is my happiness." I think she summed it up perfectly. πŸ₯ΊπŸ₯ΊπŸ₯Ί I know there's still angst to come, and I'm holding all my fingers crossed that it's done well, and that it continues in this spirit; but for right now, this drama is my happiness.

It's kind of amazing to see the binary thinking in these comments; seeing everything in terms of what's morally…
I will say, I also think it's interesting that people will look and see a FL who's trying to get out of a relationship, but being denied, stalked, and having her family's situation put into jeopardy over it, and yet still see her as the more morally deficient of the two over catching feelings for somebody else.

The REAL big bad to me in this story is patriarchy and entitlement, the secondary antagonists being the characters who rape, abuse, and stalk who have been raised like infectious bacteria in a culture that doesn't care what a woman wants from her life, just so long as she stays in line, obeys her father or male partner and shuts up.

It's kind of amazing to see the binary thinking in these comments; seeing everything in terms of what's morally black and white. To me, there's such a hugeeee problem in media literacy if anybody's seeing this as a story that's supposed to lead by moral example over portraying characters with realistically messy and complicated human relationships with each other.

I see. I don't know anybody who's close to me who'd make a joke like that, and it wasn't entirely clear by the emoji alone (which could also indicate mockery / calling somebody a "clown", or something similar), so it felt a little strange coming from an internet stranger. But my apologies; I'm autistic and I struggle to read tone, so I may have jumped to overreactive. β™‘

I understand this might come across as an overreaction – but really? I feel like if you're in your thirties (going by your profile), you should know by now it's weird to tell somebody to stop breathing, even on the internet. Especially over a comment that was overall positive and lighthearted.

I'm quite a bit younger than you, but even I know better. Grow up.

This might be a little weird to say... but Ai-Oon's toxic and May's toxic match so well together to me it almost cancels out to healthy πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I love how messed up this show is; I feel like I understand exactly how and why everybody acts the way they do, and I feel like that's been a real source of strength for the story so far. I hope it keeps on going how it's going. <3

On Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born Nov 17, 2024
Four opinions / speculations:

1) I don't think Ju-Ran's ending is so entirely clear-cut bleak; I believe it was intentionally left open-ended as to whether she married or not. The fact that Yeong-Seo clearly has a good inheritance and that she seems to have approval from her mother makes me think that there might at least be a little bit of hope if she chose an alternate path – but even if she didn't, I think the point is that it's supposed to feel tragic that she might not have a choice, that she might be forced to turn away from her romantic desires, career ambitions and promises. From a country that's still widely homophobic and patriarchal, I think stories taking a stance on that at all is something.

2) I suspect they kept Jeongnyeon's romantic options more "open" through tension and subtext not only because of corporate decisions and censorship (though I do think they played a hefty part), but also because the creators didn't want to stomp too hard on the romantic interest in the manhwa. I saw somebody notice that earlier on, when Jeognyeon is eating steamed buns, there's a conversation between schoolgirls talking about one them being a writer. I believe this little bit of overheard conversation serves to imply that her romantic interest from the manhwa (who is a writer) exists somewhere in this world, but is just not shown on screen. I can't help but wonder if they're incredibly subtly implying that she's who Jeongnyeon is eventually going to end up with.

3) I think this drama was a masterclass in the art of acting, and a must-watch from that perspective alone, let alone the rest of the design elements, the writing, the styling, the direction – everything was done so well, but to me above all else, this drama showed some phenomenal acting, and I believe it was the intention that every other design element revolved around showing the acting off. I think this has got to be one of Kim Tae Ri's best-acted dramas just in terms of the sheer range, and I'm not saying that lightly. The emotionality, the depth, the amount of different characters she had to pull off – I like that, in my opinion as somebody who's trained in singing since I was eight, she hasn't necessarily go the best singing voice in terms of raw talent but she was able to act like she COULD be. I think that's an incredible acting feat to pull off and a real testament to the training she put in. I think I'll never not be in awe of her.

4) In terms of what else stood out, I think the rest of the cast was incredible too – I also really liked the moments of subtext for what characters are truly feeling through the plays; I felt like that was really well handled and delivered in terms of the writing and acting, and did a lot especially for the queer subtext. The stages were exquisite, too, and I feel like they did a really great job of presenting traditional Korean theatre in a way that could easily appeal to modern viewers. I'm sure there are many, many other things of note I'm just not thinking of right now.

If anybody read to the end of this, than lol, bless you. I appreciate you. πŸ’œπŸ™πŸ»

I think Ploy's angle of looking down on Ai-Oon being poor from a position of wealth, and implying that she is deceiving her for material gain is doing a lot to shape perceptions on her. While yes, she's technically right that Ai-Oon is deceiving her (I think that's a really good observation some of the people on here have made) – the audience knows that her deception comes from a place of emotionality, and knows that Ploy is directly attacking an emotional weak-spot (that she's a burden, good-for-nothing, a leech, a stand-in at best) – and likely not doing is for solely altruistic reasons, for she comes at it largely from a place of wanting to take over as May's girlfriend.

I do, however, think that Ploy will be good for Ai-Oon's arc, as by attacking her on a weak-spot, it has indirectly propelled her into positive action, with her dealing with her feelings of inferiority by returning to a past desire she'd put away. Everything at this point still feels temporary (from the grandmother's affections, to the laptop – to May herself), but Ai-Oon's taken a step in the right direction for carving a life she wants out for herself.

There's so much I love about this drama. So many things I've been blown away by. As a visually impaired sapphic who uses a white cane too – as an aspiring writer who's struggled with confidence, I think regardless of the outcome, this drama's doing a commendable job getting people to consider our lives, and our humanity as disabled people. πŸ’œ

with the way the actresses & pluto team seriously advocate for PWDs that thai government took down the street…
I haven't read the novel so this is just a theory, but I've seen some spoilers – I wonder if they're going to go down the route of her being visually impaired or partially sighted? Honestly, as a visually impaired person who's not fully blind myself (tunnel vision; I can see in the centre, but my peripheral vision is missing), it's not often that's represented in media, and I think that'd be a cool way of keeping the disability, but also keeping the plot-twist and being more realistic to the reality of blindness existing on a spectrum.

the ending...season 2? or the novel also same?
The novel goes into the outcome of their relationship a bit more, then the spin-off / sequel book Reverse With Me, based on the love story of one of their two daughters, elaborates more on how they are as a married couple. The drama adaptation for Reverse With Me should be coming soon (sometime in the next few months), but I'm not sure how much they will feature in it.
