Your process sounds reasonable, especially like you mentioned, for chinese costume dramas. They can really get you with pretty cover art - but once it starts airing suddenly it turns out it was just a mini drama 😄🥲

I sometimes give lower rated dramas a chance (but usually not if they’re rated lower than 6.9) and if you’re prepared for the worst, they’re sometimes even more fun to watch just because of how comically bad or outdated certain aspects are. What comes to mind are "Sweet Stranger and Me" and "Lonely Enough To Love“.
However when it comes to movies I don’t find mdl ratings to be accurate in any way at all - heck - all my favorite asian movies have poor ratings on here.🥲😂
