It looks like it, which would actually be in turn a remake of the American series Your Honor which was a remake of an Israeli series Kvodo. All remakes down the line. Writers just redoing things that worked in other countries

Well that ending felt like it kinda got scrambled together and forced. You can tell some people got too ambitious with this but with the maximum episodes and minutes that dramas can now have they just couldn't do all of it.

Like we all know the grand princess was going to fall did another prince have to die. Poor minor role getting killed off like that. The beginning was somewhat promising and then that fall off.

Just a slight correction about his title in Are You the One?, he was a Wang or Vassal king/prince. Below an imperial prince in hierarchy (but could potentially be more powerful than a prince) but higher than duke. Chinese nobility has many ranks and layers and translations aren't always the best.

There were many ranks to Chinese nobility but English simplifies it when it is being translated.The mother is royal/grand princess as she is sister to the emperor. Her daughter, Mingyue, is at a lower rank of princess but they just translate it to princess.

Someone told me the princess royal is actually an adopted sister of the emperor and not blood related in the novel, making MIngyue the adopted cousin of Yu Qi. Don't know if that's been changed for the drama yet.

At this point finding the little plot holes is just fun: how is that after Yu Qi bites Jiang Si's finger to get her bleeding a little to drain the drug from her system, and Jiang Si ends up jumping back and grabbing her clothes there is no blood at all on her clothes? Director really going above and beyond to keep the laundry budget at a minimum.

Novelists can get strict contracts but again money. It might not take too much for novelists to give up creative control especially if the novelist isn't making too much money as is.

Money, it makes the world go round. This one is really on producers and studios, so they take existing IPs because the framework is already there; a world, characters, and story. Pay some amount to license and then spend some time to edit the story to their liking and what they think will get them the most views in subscriptions or ppv. Then they sell it to the public as an adaptation knowing they already have an existing fanbase and can potentially sell to more with a more streamlined story. Ultimately spend less time creating an original script with an original world and what not.

The point is screenwriters, directors, and especially producers think they know better and what will sell or in this case get more views. You see it happen a lot in Western media adaptations like with the Witcher series, which still upsets me how they lost Henry Cavill but alas.

But you take an existing IP for "adaptation", because it will have an existing demographic that will have an interest because they read the novel and enjoyed. Then the writers and directors change the story because they don't think certain elements will be adapted well, sell well, and because this is China everything has to pass the censors. Of course you have producers providing input too which can end up changing a story a lot. A lot of parties have their hands in the cookie jar and want a cookie at the end.

Maybe I should read the novel because so much was changed. Writers (and marketing teams) do love putting love triangles in dramas.

Probably yes to annoying cousin arc, I never read the novel and novel readers have said drama deviates pretty heavily.

But to the comment about ML's sister. Looking at the relationship chart there seems to be a sister but she hasn't appeared yet and she will be matched with the FL's brother. The Princess that has shown up is titled as Princess Royal because she's the Emperor's sister and thus Yu Qi's aunt. So the Princess Royal's daughter (Mingyue) is the ML's cousin. Which I guess in Chinese we could say sister but everyone knows they are cousins. Also not that I'm down for a cousin marriage but this is a period drama and cousins married each other pretty often in historical times. Cousin marriages are apparently still popular in certain parts of the world.

The princess currently being talked about and power player in the imperial court is a princess royal meaning sister to the reigning emperor. The daughter of the princess royal is niece to the emperor and cousin to Yu Qi; the princess royal was trying to marry her daughter to Yu Qi.

Nice of you to put this out there but I don't think people will mistake it. Princess royal means sister to the emperor not an imperial concubine. Cui Mingyue and Yu Qi are cousins.
