The only thing I find weird and completely off is, JW wanted to leave the hospital to become a priest, that was…
He thought it was his calling, partly because he was burned out as a doctor. It was always implied that his true calling was as a pediatric surgeon, but due to his personality and ways of coping, he was reaching a point of no return, hence he thought becoming a priest would help him “escape” the emotional fallout of being a Dr.
His mother, clergy siblings, friends and bosses all hoped he would not leave, in part because his work as a pediatric surgeon (a rare specialty) is really invaluable, and they wanted him to stay on as a son and a friend. They thought he was already on the right path as PS too.
Realistically too, people do make major life decisions when they fall in love and hope to commit and settle down.
In the case of AJW, someone who, by all accounts, has never had a relationship (fallen in love?) before, falling in love and wanting a relationship would be a major game changer.
I prefer the actor's voices. But your article is in my opinion, very well written and expressing your opinion…
Meryl Streep might not be conventionally beautiful, but she is gorgeous, and we would be so much poorer without her visuals and performances gracing our screen. That Italian director sounded like… (no words…)
Well written and reasoned article, thank you very much. You laid out the reasons, pros and cons succinctly and in easy to understand terms. And as in everything, there is no pleasing everyone.
Dubbing is an artistic and production choice, and would be reflected in its end product.
That said, one main reason I seldom watch CDramas (Mainland, in this case) is for this, the dubbing. As someone who generally dislike dubbing, in whatever language, it is a disappointing fact.
For me, voice is part of the acting, and while voice actors are professionals and invaluable, especially in animation, I normally don’t have any love for dubs.
I love all the many varied languages, dialects and accents people speak, and even when most are unintelligible to me, it enriched my enjoyment of a show. Give me subs, any time and day.
When I recall actors/actresses who had a major impact on me personally, their performances and characters, that crucial ingredient of their voices also came into play. How they portrayed the characters, the emotions and nuances were also carried through their voices, and even when I did not understand the language, I could understand the underlying emotions they were trying to express.
For me, that is commendable acting.
As other commentators have said, a voice conveys a lot, and what does it say about an actor/actresses’ performance that their flaws have to be covered up, and an essential aspect too.
So, basically some actors/actresses are just selling their visuals. However, it is very valid in terms of entertainment, so I suppose there is no argument here.
Still, for people who enjoy and love CDrama, it is just a fact that one has to accept, I assume. When one is exposed enough to something, one gets acclimatized, and accept it. And it does have its advantages, as you put forth so excellently above in the article.
Thank you, again, for the interesting article, which is timely and relevant.
I’m here for Lee Da Hee Can anyone tell me a bit about her character? Villain or Good? She has romance or no?
Sorry that this is a late reply. If you still haven’t watched it, no, LDH is not a villain, but neither is she “good”. She, like a few other characters, had character growth in the show, and one will grow to love her by the end. There was no romance for her.
I love nearly everything about “The Guest”, but no character had my greater love than Kang Gil Young. I truly thank the writer(s), director (and his crew) and Jung Ean Chae for gifting me with such a beautiful and magnificent female character. No words are enough.
I honestly don't know, but you should ask the user who created that list. It's not an official list or anything,…
It did have people who used sign languages, but it’s a negligible part of the show. At the end too, the FL was shown to be learning sign language. I supposed those minor scenes did not warrant the tag, however.
This is my second time trying this drama and I can’t do it. I know LJS is supposed to be of age, but still.…
There was character growth if one watched till the end. She was meant to be cold and mean, and immature about her job. The high rating for this drama is NOT ridiculous. It is only so for people who don’t like it and don’t watch till the end. For many people who completed it and found something to love about the themes and characters, it’s a show which deserved its ratings. We all have our own preferences, so please don’t go stepping on others’.
I want to watch this drama but I'm afraid it'll be too scary for me, should I just go for it? Is it really scary?
It’s quite gory, violent and graphic (certain scenes). It was sort of harrowing the first time around, but rewatching it, the impact was diminished. Still, I watched this not for the horror/thrill or blood, and it was worth it, no matter the number of rewatches (of certain segments). It was the characters, their dynamics, struggles and triumphs which made this drama stood out for me. Performances were excellent, direction was superb, storytelling was solid, and the OST memorable.
This had been quite a harrowing, but brilliant watch. Many scenes were too violent and graphic for my taste, but excellent in terms of its terrifying context. However, the actors (including supporting roles), their performances, solid writing and superb directing kept me hooked and ploughing ahead till the end. The second half was less intense and it became an easier watch. It was worth it for the trio and their superb dynamics and chemistry. (Totally in love with Kang Gil Young!)
I put off watching this drama for so long, and finally decided to watch. I absolutely adore this drama so far…
I didn’t think it was draggy at all, the pacing suited the tone of the story quite well. Personally, while I don’t “love” Camellia, it’s undoubtedly an amazing show. I took my time savouring it.
As much as I love CLOY, this series brings so much social commentary yet still manages to be warm the audience.…
It’s a matter of preferences, to an extent. Still, there was no doubt in my mind why Camellia won the awards it did but not CLOY, and I “liked” CLOY more than Camellia. “Objectively”, Camellia was a much better show in terms of writing, pacing, direction etc, wonderful as CLOY was.
I dropped this bc i had a lot of dramas to watch that time but am thinking of picking it up again. Is it worth…
This is not really a light, easy-to-watch type of drama. The writing, direction, characters, acting and small details in the show were what made it amazing for me. If you like hopeful, heartwarming yet poignant human dramas (shows with a message), this show is definitely more than worth it.
Late comment, but I just wanted to agree with you. I personally enjoyed this, it was gripping, but the sheer number…
I have no idea about others, but while this was a noona-romance, the romance was not really the main reason that made me love the drama, nor its main points. It was not a too-in-your-face type of romance either.
It’s more than fine to say you didn’t find it as great as you thought, but to then question whether people were superficial (or young) for loving it was a bit iffy. I am not that young and Mr Lee did not really appeal to me (I actually avoided the drama because of him, and still don’t find him all that now) except as Park Su-Ha.
There are tonnes of dramas around, and some good dramas which didn’t get the recognition they deserved, sure. That didn’t discount the fact that IHYV is still a wonderful drama for its fans. We all have our own subjective tastes.
lol she should be like that bcs it's in the script and it's in the story. mind u I'll accept her voice more than…
I am not a regular drama watcher nowadays, so my preferences most probably won’t match yours.
Of course, it is up to you if you want to compare it to much more “exquisite” and complex stories, just that I won’t.
I do not think “Perfect and Casual” was generic, even if the tropes/cliches and characters were. As I have said, I am not doing any comparison because I have not watched others.
On its own, however, the pairing itself - and the male lead character - is the type I have always wanted to see onscreen, but have not had the pleasure to see in a simple, lightweight romcom in those few I have watched.
A calm, respectful and loving relationship developed maturely and honestly without unnecessary drama were the winning points for me. The natural vibe, small details and dialogues in the show (cliched perhaps) were what made it memorable for me, less about the fluff or sweetness, which I am sure some other more popular shows could provide more of.
Whether this show will finally be rated higher or lower doesn’t really mean anything to me, because it is a gem for me, even if not for others. Life is such.

While I have not watched much fluffies and can’t make any comparison, any viewing is bound to be subjective. Some do not like the FL’s character and the actress’s performance, but it did not make her performance bad. For a newbie, XRH did well in her role. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance here. It felt organic, and improved as the show went on.
Character wise, it’s how the story wanted her to be, and for a naive and innocent character, I have seen worse. OTOH, to compare it to Liar’s Game, where the story was much more complex/complicated, and the main FL had a critical role in the whole narrative as you so well elicited, it’s not really a fair comparison.
This was a simple web drama, and in the supposedly “mindless idol drama” romcom genre. For all that, it was a solidly written story, even if full of cliches and tropes. Care and consideration was given to the production and development of the relationships. In general, performances were impeccable.
I have watched shows where the performances did not appeal to me, but I did not think they were bad, they were just not to my preference.
Was this the best show (or even romcom) I have ever seen? Far from it. It was simple, simplistic even, but that did not detract from the fact that the execution was refreshing and well done. That said, it won’t be able to satisfy everyone.
This show has become a favourite because many of the elements satisfied my own preferences, but it was still just a straightforward romcom.
Perhaps the ratings will go down when more people watch it, or it might not. Ratings do no always reflect the quality of a drama/show, however.
He does share similarities with some other actors, can’t be denied. Still, his looks are quite uniquely his own. To an extent, it might be a sign of how certain looks are more prioritized in the entertainment circle. I am sorry if I came across as a bit harsh. (Visuals not within our immediate vicinity do tend to look more similar than not).
