She can't fathom why people are endlessly fighting for their lives as captives bc she would rather die. When Jang Hyun forced a smile at her, just know that he was looking at her in disgust.

Just finished watching and I cried my eyes out. The ending shattered me. The pain, angst, longing and heartbreak pouring out from Jang Hyun and Gil Chae was out of this world. This episode was definitely a 10/10 for me despite everyone saying it is just filler.

People don't realize in those times women didn't have rights or choices. They had to marry in order to be taken care of and supported. She was literally suffering because she did not have a husband. She basically already accepted a proposal by the time Jang Hyun came back... it was already too late because she had committed to that loser officer. If she had run away with Jang Hyun more than likely she would have been caught and killed. Obviously she would not want her family to suffer because of her. She had to stick with the decision she had already made.
People believe that if Gil Chae had run away with Jung Hyun, all of her problems would have been solved, but the truth is that she would have brought shame on her family and they would have been punished. Both Gil Chae and Jang Hyun would have probably been hunted down and killed. Her family and friends could have also been executed for helping her escape.
Women back then were men’s property. They had the illusion of choice: marry and have kids or don’t. She literally lost everything in the war and did not have the comfort of her noble father taking care of her anymore because he lost his mind. She was basically living under Eum Ae's care and that's why when Yeon Jun was punished for defying the king they all ended up suffering. She still had to look after and marry off her sister as well as care for her father. She couldn't be selfish and give in to her desires because she had to take care of her family. Regardless of how much she loved Jang Hyun, she knew it was better to let him go and let him live his life believing she did not love him.

I lowkey feel based on what you said, if the predictions are right... the person in the jail cell is Ryang Eum. I feel like he took the fall / blame for Jang Hyun to repay him for saving his life. That scene on the beach where Jang Hyun is all bloodied, I think Jang Hyun will fight all those men like in the battle of 17 vs 1 but he will have some help to escape. Not sure how everything will pan out but that's how I feel now... especially if JH and GC will get their happy ending.
