Overall, just okay
It started out strong with quite a solid pool of trainees, and I respect that they tried to do things differently from other shows at different points (e.g. group audition stages, style of elimination reveals). The line-up of mentors is also very impressive - active and popular k-pop idols SEVENTEEN The8 and GOT7 BamBam, as well as singers Jeff Satur & Tia Ray, who are well-respected within their respective industries. That being said, given that I watched it live and participated in voting, I think there was insufficient resources overall to inform voting - meaning fan cams, live vocals, even full performances. At one point, it also started getting pretty obvious who the final 7 was going to be, which just gets a bit boring and demoralising for watchers.
I do think the show could have had stronger narratives and spotlights on more trainees, but in any case, I wish the debut group and undebuted trainees all the best!

a bold attempt at reviving the Singer franchise
it’s been a number of years since Singer has aired, and this season saw both the introduction of the live (直播) format as well as the inclusion of more foreign singers. the execution of the latter was much better than the former - the two foreign singers who were part of the starting line-up (Faouzia and Chanté Moore) have solid technical skills and artistry, and the show also managed to bring in some big foreign names like Adam Lambert and Lenka. where the show lacks slightly is in the quality of the local challengers, which lowers the drama or tension of the “challenge” format towards the end of the season. that being said, the show does give us quite a few enjoyable music performance while steering clear of the sob story/overly dramatic narratives employed by some other music shows. worth a watch if you really enjoy music variety, otherwise you might be better off just watching some short clips of the performances. Was this review helpful to you?
