He Loved Her Too Early, She Loved Him Too Late

This drama had almost everything I absolutely cannot stand in a C-drama:

The dreaded amnesia plot.

An unnecessary love triangle.

A female lead who cannot make up her mind.

Rejection after rejection after rejection.

And let's not forget the ridiculous number of kidnappings!

Seriously, how many times can one person get kidnapped?! Ping Jun has been getting kidnapped since episode one, and at some point, I genuinely lost count. At this rate, getting kidnapped was practically part of her daily routine.

And yet, despite all these frustrations, I COULD NOT STOP WATCHING.

Why? Two words: Cheng Lei.

This man absolutely carried the drama for me. His acting was superb, and I am convinced he was born to play fierce, intimidating, powerful men. Please, for the love of everything, NEVER cast this man as a poor, powerless character. He belongs in positions of authority, commanding every room he walks into. The charisma, the intensity, the presence... he was simply made for these roles!

Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the female lead. I'm not sure whether it was the writing, the characterization, or the actress herself, but I struggled to connect with her throughout the drama. Her constant indecisiveness certainly didn't help.

Now, let's talk about the romance, because this is where I felt the drama wasted its biggest opportunity.

This show had all the ingredients to deliver an incredible dark romance, especially considering how rarely we get a proper one in C-dramas. A powerful, morally grey male lead, an intense relationship, and plenty of opportunities for emotional tension. The potential was RIGHT THERE!

But the execution? Unfortunately, it fell short.

For most of the drama, I struggled to understand what exactly connected the male and female leads. Beyond his feelings for her, there was very little that made me believe in their relationship. The emotional development was lacking, and the romance often felt frustrating rather than compelling.

Ironically, it wasn't until Ping Jun disappeared AGAIN, this time for two whole years, that I finally started to feel the romance. Their relationship suddenly had the emotional depth and longing I had been waiting for all along. For the first time, I could actually see the love story I had wanted from the beginning.

But of course, that part didn't last nearly long enough.

And that brings me to what I think perfectly summarizes their entire relationship:

He loved her too early, and she loved him too late.

That, to me, was the tragedy of their romance.

Despite the questionable writing, repetitive plot devices, frustrating female lead, and underdeveloped romance, I was completely hooked. And I have to give credit where it's due: Cheng Lei's performance was the main reason I kept coming back.

Was I frustrated? Absolutely.

Did I question the writers' decisions multiple times? Without a doubt.

Would I watch it again just for Cheng Lei? No_ Too heartbreaking
