BTW do we need any more proof yet that Lee Soo Hyuk should play romantic male lead? COME ON! His character was a trash-fire of boring cliches and he STILL sold it 100% solid gold. <3
Man, I wish there was more of Kim Young Dae's virtual story. If I'd been using BoD, I'd have CAMPED OUT in the Joseon-Era Romeo and Juliet premise with KYD. I could watch a whole drama of just that. <3
I wish there was a fan edit of the Penthouse that just shows his scenes so I could watch them. Sorry Penthouse fans, I tried, and I couldn't get through the first episode. Nonstop screeching women - I can't. I mean, I don't expect a ton from a soap opera anyway, but I'd still like to watch KYD 😭💔
Well...no. I watched it because I like both the leads from other dramas and I prefer shows with older characters. I hate it because the writing is terrible. But not everyone seems aware of that, so I guess the litmus test is - if you think it's cute when 35-year-olds go on an amusement park date and act 12, you will probably enjoy this drama a lot.
I was shocked that they didn't start giving her a little bit of a baby bump as the weeks passed. Just baggy clothes…
Honestly, how hard is it to stuff some padding in there and wear maternity clothes? I'm not asking for a skin-textured realistic 8-months prosthetic here :P

To be fair she did have "morning sickness" for a little while, but it cleared up pretty fast. Then she was randomly crying over-emotionally once, and I thought maybe they were going to start bringing in the hormone fluctuations, but they kinda dropped that immediately. :(
Clearly, the pregnancy premise was a sham. The biggest payoff is having them go shopping for baby clothes now that they're in the "Cute and mutual" phase. :P
After watching 10 episodes (waiting for ep 12 to be out to watch the last 2) I can safely say this is an ok drama…
I was shocked that they didn't start giving her a little bit of a baby bump as the weeks passed. Just baggy clothes that maybe are supposed to make her look wider? But she's wearing JEANS. Not maternity ones. Normal ones. Jeans don't stretch, man. How's your sonogram showing that much development and you're still wearing jeans? Wow.
Also like, how many times are we going to have the same scene where someone tries to make her drink alcohol and she just can't say a word until someone else rescues her with some dumb excuse? Maybe you should have at least told your team that you're pregnant as soon as you decided to keep the baby. They all like you, they won't gossip. I understand the potential stigma of a relationship with the company president, but you can just say, "Sorry, the details are a little personal and I don't want to talk about it, but anyway I'm having a baby so I will work hard until maternity leave, but I won't be able to drink for a while."
I agree with a lot of this, especially the Adults in an Adult Premise acting like teenage virgins (and btw refusing to do ANYTHING realistic to deal with the pregnancy situation after deciding to keep the baby - literally HOURS of dramu could have been erased by some simple honesty in advance) - but I wouldn't scream "ban the director" necessarily. Clearly they are inexperienced, but some of the garbage of this show is a result of the screenplay. I don't know about the webtoon's story, but there are massive writing issues here too, which is not the director's fault.
I actually think I blame the marketing department the most. The drama itself is locked into all the worst and most childish cliches, but they decided to sell it on this "pregnancy first" premise, tricking me into thinking this might be a more mature romance with something interesting going on. Very mean trick, marketing people. :(
Agreed, both excellent actors. I think it really depends on the tone of the overall show and what kind of personality or vibe they're going for. Too soon to say. But I'm always wishing for LSH because I need him as ML more. XD
I usually don't look up reviews because they tend to be....unhelpful in objectively determining actual show quality (let's just leave it at that) but I'm glad I did this time. Thank you for saving me 30 hours. I've only watched the first handful of episodes and I agree with your assessment. I was curious if it was going to start to pull itself together eventually, but it sounds like Nope, it'll just be more of this and worse.
I also like the leads and wanted to check it out for their sake, but I don't get invested in a couple just because I have liked both actors in other stuff. The gaps in her flashbacks and the total lack of info about what happened between them before just makes it impossible for me to care about their second chance. :P
So I appreciate the confirming review and thank you for it :)
Basically, this is a COMEDY. All the characters are jokes (except the ML, who is the "straight man" being serious) and all the plot events happen to create wackiness and laughs. (And of course, later on there's massively overdone angst because Asian drama doesn't separate their genres like western media does. It's Drama Jambalaya.)
If you are laughing by the end of episode 2, you will probably have fun. If you are annoyed and not finding this funny, don't waste your time. The "plot" doesn't matter - the whole show is going to carry on like this because it's a COMEDY.
Personally, I loathed it. I would have been happy with it, tropes and all (I like tropes!) if it had been taking itself seriously and really attempting to work through the plot given in the summary. Awesome cast, too. But it was all there just to get laughs, and this is not my sense of humor.
I couldn't even watch it for the ML, and I watch TRASH just so I can look at Wang You Shuo's pretty face. But I hated the FL and her idiot baby voice so much that I started to hate HIM for liking her like that, and I don't wanna hate him.
If you do like this show, all I can say is I envy you. I'm glad you enjoy it. But this is my warning to those who find it obnoxious early on: DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. Quit now. It's not going to get better.
1. Always in a wig drama 2. Always second fiddle 3. Always, always stands out. The number of MLs that get upstaged by him, I can't even.
Oh except the 2 (?) times he was the lead (that I have been able to get access to and watch) - he's great, it's not his fault the show as a whole is unbearable. When am I gonna get to see him as the main lead in a well-written drama? :(
Concubine Yan and the king was WEIRDDD especially when it turns out that she is TWENTY YEARS OLD ☹️ I mean…
oh gross XP i'm glad I didn't watch, that would have hurt me, I actually liked the princess' character :(
See, it's like - choose one or the other. If it's historically accurate he'd have slept with her the first night, the end. (And there are some shows like that, of course.) If we're in fantasy land (which we are) and we're gonna dodge the grossness of the real historic past (which we do) then we have to stick to MODERN STANDARDS which say EW GROSS NO this is not romantic. Him being a fond father figure would be fine.
I'm amazed she's actually 20. I was guessing a little younger than that :/
Thrillodrama.

Eesh.
Confession? Getting together? End of episode 7
But acting like adults? kinda never

The half-subbed dramacool crap doesn't count, the quality is so low that it's unwatchable (imo).
I don't even need subs. If I could get a decent picture I'd just jerry-rig something with an AI translator and get a good enough translation.
I know it isn't considered a great show, but I just wanna see more early roles from Zhu Yi Long. :(
