imo rl friends who are actors actually tend to give good skinship and kissing scenes. We see that all the time in BL dramas. Friends get silly and competitive, and they're already very comfortable with each other. Drama kids are just like that.

Thanks for replying :) I can see a lot of comments saying they are great but I haven't seen details about their plotline and how they fit into the story. I was considering if I should watch this drama, so just curious. Usually I can pick up this info from MDL comments very quickly but this time I haven't been able to.

everyone here is saying they love the 2nd couple. what is their dynamic/tropes? From the trailer and MDL summary I can tell the setup for the main couple, but what is the second couple's deal?

It's a fantasy world. Not a lot of world building of that world, it's not a serious drama. But very entertaining!!!

I liked that they kept this from the novel, it was an unusual set up that makes the story a little unique. Her family, including the kids, really all do like each other. They can argue like families would but at the end of the day, they stand up for each other. I think it influences FL behavior - it makes her less scared of divorce and more feel of independence (she knows she's not alone, even as a concubine's daughter... Even a concubine that came from a brothal!)

I agree that FL doesn't seem to be deeply in love with ML yet, and it totally makes sense. ML is clearly drawn to her and attracted but it makes sense in the story that he will fall faster because she has an extra impediment (being from another world).

I think it's true that honestly cdramas will never have the mass appeal internationally that kdramas do. And this is one of multiple reasons. But it's also true that foreign audiences simply are not their primary target. Yes, they provide internationally now via streaming - why not, as they can gain some extra revenue at low additional costs. But that remains a side-venture for chinese entertainment companies. Corporations aren't going to leave money on the table. However, they are going to make product decisions based on 80% of the audience, not 20%. If we foreign viewers choose to watch chinese shows, we must accept not being their target and that what is produced is not being made to cater to our tastes. And that's ok!

Mentally prepare yourself for a possible BE. The novel had a happy ending for the leads but there are multiple examples of a drama changing that to a BE and this is the type of drama it might happen in.

Fundamentally, they killed LR because they didn't trust her. They thought of her as power hungry and not a person who prioritizes relationship. So if no one is around to oppose her, they were scared that she would be ruthless. They really thought she would take the chance to kill PWX for power (not: you kill me so I'll you back scenario like happened.. no, they thought he'd be tolerant to her and weak because he still likes her and she'd off him for political reasons and take over.) Basically, PWX understood her all along but no one else did.

The novel truly was that good. I even liked SRQ's character a lot in it. Not that I liked him as a person who LR should be with. But he was interesting to read about. All the characters were interesting and make sense.

because the emperor will not accept both - he has grown paranoid and full of resentment towards the empress' clan. to him, empress and LR = the noble families. he has long ago only PRETENDED to treat LR like a daughter.
