I don't believe their last interaction indicates a desire from either side to remain friends. It's clear that he likes her but doesn't want to reciprocate her feelings because he thinks his personal life is too messy and could complicate things for the poor girl in the long run. Therefore, he thinks it's better to be direct and end things rather than leave her with false hope by trying to stay friends afterward.
