Deng Kai once again playing an ambitious, lecherous villain... seriously, why do long-lengths dramas always give him this kind of part ? It’s not like he hasn't proved his acting ability !
I'm surprised, because not only this is actually even better than I expected and this is not as cliche/stereotypical that I thought But more importantly, BL and WXY are definitely those who impressed me most (and it’s not like I expected them to be bad) : - Bai Lu : her character could have been very boring and cliche, but I feel like Bai Lu absolutely wanted to make sure that her acting here wouldn't fall into that category, and that she wouldn't be that usual female warrior who's supposed to be calm and cool but actually acts like a piece of wood. And I think she NAILED it : rather than looking exceedingly cold anfd stiff like someone with a broom stuck in the bottom, her acting is more on the aloof, natural side that make her seem like a real person, not a wooden puppet, showing both strength and feminine grace (she kinda makes me think of Oscar de Jarjayes here : the sturdiness of a man and the charm of a woman). Also, I don't know who did her costumes and her make up but that’s SPOT ON ! It’s rare to see Bai Lu with sober make up that seems to highlight her maturity instead of showing off her beauty (and although she looks good whatever she wears, it’s nice to see that she doesn’t need such artifices) - i'm also pleasantly surprised by the chemistry between she and WXY : I didn’t expect much on this side for many reasons (first : probably because he was her SML in their previous common works ; second : after all, this is a mystery genre, romance is supposed to be at best a subplot). But just like BL's acting and character, from what I've seen in these first six episodes, their relationship doesn't fall into cliches : they're sounding out each other buy they're not threatening each other already or trying to prove who's the strongest ; they seem to feel a light mutual attraction between them, like two long lost soulmates, but they're not already flirting or in love ; they seem to share mutual respect for each other but they haven't made an oath to be sworn siblings or something like that already. I think we should also praise WXY's acting. Not so long ago, he was still very stiff in his acting, but he's obviously doing huge progress and is being more and more natural, and I think he's working a lot to always improve his acting, just like Bai Lu who wanted to make sure she wouldn't seem stereotypical here. Anyway, I think that with their actings being on par, they resonate with each other and gained an unexpected, unusual kind of chemistry
