The Great Sadness. My favorite drama of 2023, but I will never be able to rewatch. Which is what I always do when I have a new favorite. But the last 5 episodes were like poison. High energy and stellar acting but to me it felt like production got the notice "all men must die", so they quickly kill everyone. It ruins the story and becomes unbelievable if at first all characters survive for 34 episodes with many scenes where they potentially could have died but suddenly they die quickly. It feels lazy and cheap. When NYZ was pierced by multiple spears at once and RY did not even turn around to look at him, I wanted to shake my TV and yell at her. Why not jump down to him?! She is like super woman from past episodes, this shouldn’t have been a problem for her, even with weakened body. Plus she was never cowardly before. She always faced painful head on. That was unnecessarily agonizing. Also the death of YSS. If she made it out with the horse that magically went from laying on the ground from the explosion to be being able to run again, then he could have done the same thing. Nobody was following her. They even had time to look towards the other’s direction and remember for a second that they’re the one for each other. I did not like this ending at all. Same for Yuan Lu… he didn’t have to rush THAT much. It took the others a day or so to fully react and then battle began… the rush wasn’t that big. So he could have taken breaks and not die from exhaustion. Again, stupid death from producers of this drama. It just felt lazy and overly dramatic. Not a good combination.
I will pretend the last 5 episodes were different and so it can remain my favorite this year.
I see many good reviews but is it also something for me who only likes costume dramas?… i only like one modern drama from 2017, but this is everywhere so I‘m wondering if it’s outstandingly good? Or just better than other modern romance. Thanks 🙏🏼
I rarely watch modern c-dramas but this one has its own folder in my phone gallery - hence I loved it a lot and could talk about the details for hours <3
