Beautiful drama starred by an Amazing Fourth; but the pacing is way too slow

Subjective Gut Rating: 8.25

I applaud GemFourth for taking on this project. It’s not easy to transition from traditional high school rom-com BLs to a more serious topic of Forbidden Love + Catholicism + Self-Discovery. It also took me a while to be in the right mood to finally watch “Ticket to Heaven”.

This is a beautiful drama following Tanrak’s journey from being a devout Catholic and a scholarship student on his way to entering a seminary, to re-discovering his true path and following his heart and eventually reconciling all the guilt in his heart. I forgot how amazing Fourth is. He’s so young yet he is so good in showing controlled and subtle facial expressions and really playing a very conflicted Tanrak. “Ticket to Heaven” would not be the same without Fourth.

I’m also glad to see Gemini playing a different role. He’s not the innocent, introverted, cool or weak character he usually plays. Instead he plays an angry and rebellious troublemaker who tests Tanrak’s faith and captures his heart. His acting is decent but I am more of a fan of Gemini.

I’m also glad to see Bright again after falling in love with him in “I Feel You Linger in the Air”. He looks so grown up here! Where’s my innocent Yai? I also really like Father Arnon. He’s firm but kind, and is such a great support for Tanrak. The hug between the two outside the confession booth was the most-touching and my favorite moment of the entire show.

Unfortunately, “Ticket to Heaven” is too long and too slow. Everything moves at a very slow pace. Not a whole lot happened in these six long episodes. I even fell asleep a couple times (when I wasn’t tired) because I got a little bored (Viki also doesn’t allow me to zoom at a faster speed). I also don’t understand why everyone looked so old in the present-day timeline, which is only about 20 years later. All of them should be about 40 years old, and the way they talk, move and dress, I thought they’re 50 or 60! The only one who should look old is Father Armon!

There are criticisms about the drama being too preachy and a propaganda for Catholicism, or the drama is not heavy-handed enough to dive deep into such a controversial topic with a more realistic ending. I personally do not find the drama to be too preachy. Because the story is about Tanrak, you cannot ignore the prayers, masses, and Bible verses when the majority of the drama is based on Tanrak’s life at St. Magdalene School. The Bible verses used are describing Tanrak’s experiences and feelings, and are relevant to the plot. Is the ending realistic? Probably not in the usual sense but I still like it. I want to believe that God is forgiving and will still love you despite you making mistakes. I like the message that one can continue to love God in their own way.

Despite liking many elements of “Ticket to Heaven”, I can’t ignore the fact that I fell asleep a few times due to its slowness. Not just the plot is slow, but the way they talk and move. There are too many silences and slow motion. And this drama is only 6-episode long. These factors do affect my viewing pleasure. I think the drama could easily be cut down by a third or make this into a movie. But Fourth is amazing as always, and he makes Tanrak’s journey beautiful and worth rooting for.
