Cliche but with a twist
Firstly, I understand and went through some other reviews that this is most definitely not everyone's cup of tea. You will like it if you are already into series like Squid Game, Sweet Home, All of us are Dead etc.
When I watched the first episode, I did find it relatively slow and it heavily reminded me of Squid Game. Debt driven protagonist, about to take his life, sees an advertisement for a job, takes the chance. The same old story. A slight thing that differentiated this was that the jobs were advertised and masked as completely normal and the person in question was not suspicious to take them on in the beginning. The convenience store episode and the rat monster straight away reminded me of the monsters in Sweet Home.
Overall, it was just a debt driven man, taking on dangerous, high paying and unexplainable jobs.
What kept me hooked was the fact that although all jobs were set in the same environment, they were different and each presented a fairly different danger. The change was good and the cinematography and visual effects were top notch.
The creatures and the yin energy coming from the other world as Mr. S explains with that black and white circle is very similar to the Upside Down from Stranger Things according to me.
The ending did not explain things well about what and why the yin energy takes over, where do Mr. S and Yeon ju go and what happens to them. A lot of things were left unclear. I did like the part where Hyeok Jun stops the woman from suiciding.
Conclusion:
There was nothing relatively new about this concept. A lot of genres were slapped into a short series which left major plot holes and explanations but the execution was so well done and the visuals were amazing. It ended with a cliffhanger and absolutely not even a small closure or explanations. There could be a redemption if a season 2 is immediately scheduled for release and there are major plot changes and the story shifts from cliche to unique. Acting way well done. I enjoyed it because I generally like this genre even if it is repetitive but it may not be everyone's cup of tea.
