I believe he is undercover and pretending so he can get information to assist the police to catch a gang of baddies.
Yeah, I think Wan Garage is operating some sort of a smuggle ring, and Jin Zhao is helping the police to infiltrate and shut them down. Maybe as revenge for what they did to him (that is causing his customer’s accident and amputation by switching out the car parts with cheap ones, then framing Jin Zhao). Or to prevent a similar thing happening again?
I don’t know why iqiyi did them so dirty with promotions. They didn’t promote together just like other dramas,…
I think it's because Esther is laying low right now, there was a smear campaign against her a month ago and people were digging into her family's business as well. Nothing came out of it, but I can understand her not wanting to bring too much attention to herself to protect her family.
Is it just me or episode 1 started really quickly, like suddenly she fly to her brothers house, am I missing a…
Yeah, I was thrown off by how fast the first episode was moving too. But I suppose it makes sense that the show didn’t want to dawdle on her life in China. Plus once they are in Thailand, I’m completely immersed in ML’s hotness that I’m glad for the speed of the set up.
2) I reread your comment, and agree. They crack down, monitor and control religion for “security” reasons. But that doesn’t change the fact that they do strictly control and interject themselves into religious activities - the whole Dalai Lama successor controversy being a great example. So I’m not really sure what there is to debate about this. Simply put, Chinese government have a strong hold on religion in China because they view it as security threat and as a result all supernatural forces in Chinese drama are explained away as aliens. I appreciate the discussion, but at the end of the day I’m just here to talk about a tv show.

Yep, you are correct - I misspoke. The government is atheist, but does recognize certain religions. Banned is the wrong word, however the government does have strong oversight/control over religions in china.
I’m going edit my previous post so that I’m not passing around false info!! Thanks for pointing this out!

Yeah, it’s kind of funny to see the crazy hoops some cdramas have to jump through to get around the censorship. Although annoying at times too, bc a lot of times it does take away from the original story and makes it a less effective adaptation.
I did read somewhere that one of reasons why the Chinese government is so against supernatural elements is because it typically have a strong tie in to religion, which is monitored in china. But censorship in china is really hard to understand and predict, and at times seems to be based on the reviewer’s mood.

It’s a common trope in cdrama, mostly because of censorship banned straight supernatural/ghost stories that take place in the modern world and many cdramas get around it by just calling them aliens.
Examples are Guardians, Rattan, The Seven Relics of Ill Omens - all the source material had supernatural origins, but the drama adaptation explained everything away as aliens.
Why aliens are okay but ghosts/supernatural monsters aren’t? Who the hells knows.
I saw comments saying this series is homophobic, is this true? I don't expect to see BL in a series like this,…
Those comments are referring to a specific case midway through the series - episode 14-18, so you might already encountered this. But Lu Ling Feng attacked the scholar who is a murder suspect when he thought the scholar was cheating on his wife with another man. I don't recall if Liu Ling Feng attacked the scholar because of homophobia or because he thought the scholar had murdered both his gay lover and his wife, probably a little of both. The rest of the show is fine, so you could just skip that particular case and resume from the end of ep 18.
I had absolutely no expectations for this show, mainly because the RMP was unwatchable and LIP was boring. I took a chance on the first episode because I read a raving review on the day this aired. And I must say that I'm thoroughly enjoying this show. I love CY's portrayal of Fugul - his loneliness, pain and those small sparks of life igniting behind his Soldier restraint and mask. I simply adore the FL, while her spider form was uncanny valley, I loved her story, Her genuine goodness that shines through the weird bobble head LYT sticking out of a pink spider body.. And once she gained her human form, she has this wonderful childlike innocence and curiosity for the world. And I just love their dynamic together, her devotion and caring - she's first person who ever openly exhibited any sort affection and caring towards Soldier. Her curiosity, innocence and her perspective of the demon world opens Fugui's eyes to the outside. And ML slowly blossoms into his own person - escaping from the cold isolation and facade of the Solider, learning to think on his own and to become Fugui.
Edit to say: This love story is earned. It's not like the countless other cdramas I seen before the where the main leads fall in love after one meeting. I'm witnessing episode by episode the bond developing between Fugui and QT, I can't wait to see that bond deepen into love.
I saw signs of love triangle starting from episode 8. From there, I didn't dare to watch. Especially after reading…
There is no love triangle. The 2ML is in love/obsessed with the FL, but she is not interested in him romantically at all. Unfortunately, 2ML is too delusional to believe in her repeated rejections. 2ML also has a devoted sidekick who loves him and sacrifices everything for him, but he’s too delusional about FL to notice. Basically a bunch of one sided delusional pining and self-sacrifices that no one asked for.
