I got impression this was going to be no romance, more serious, but now I hear it has romance and comedy. OK then, like you said FI and 800 will be serious but still waiting though. I didn't know Cup of Love was serious character.

On Moonlit Reunion Oct 24, 2025
The claim that “anyone can play Mei Zhuyu” feels superficial, missing the depth of a character whose stoic exterior hides a complex emotional journey and reflects Moonlit Reunion’s subtle tone, built on quiet moments and restrained performances. I honestly can’t imagine any actor embodying Mei Zhuyu as perfectly as Xu Kai does—his commanding physical presence and unique aura are unmatched, capturing the character’s reserved intensity with precision.

This critique likely stems from wanting a different kind of energy, but that misses the essence of Mei Zhuyu. The role demands an actor who can convey quiet strength and subtle vulnerability, which Xu Kai delivers flawlessly. Another actor could take the role, but it would shift the tone and emotional core—making it a different story entirely. If someone isn’t evaluating based on the actual character and story, they’re just projecting their own version of what they wish it was.

That opinion overlooks the character’s complexity, possibly because the person hasn’t fully engaged with the drama (not everyone commenting truly takes the time to watch a drama properly) or grasped Mei Zhuyu’s nuances. In Moonlit Reunion, Mei Zhuyu’s reserved, almost unemotional nature aligns seamlessly with Xu Kai’s strength in portraying introspective roles. His muted demeanor and gradual emotional evolution showcase his control and precision. Even in heightened emotional scenes, Xu Kai maintains a subdued intensity, keeping Mei Zhuyu’s personality consistent and understated—making this one of his most refined roles.

In summary, not just anyone can play Mei Zhuyu
1. The role demands a tailored, nuanced performance to express his complex emotional depth.
2. Xu Kai’s unique physical presence and subtle acting style make him a perfect fit, capturing Mei Zhuyu’s quiet intensity with precision.
3. The role isn’t interchangeable—casting someone else would shift the emotional core and tone of the story, creating a different drama altogether.

I think Mei Zhuyu is in his early 20s, maybe around 24. Xu Kai’s physical appearance and the way he moves are perfect for the character—he has the right energy, look, and presence.
In this drama, the actor has to not wear makeup, do their own stunts, and look mesmerizing when bloody and dying.

Don’t you feel like you’ve been gypped when the heat index kept falling just shy of 27k—by a hair! Highest Tencent peak: 08/26 → 26,981

A 6.6 Douban rating ranking #2 on the recent popular (hot) list is rare, as Douban’s trending list typically favors dramas over 7.0. Moonlit Reunion, being a supernatural fantasy, I would not expect it to trend high on Douban. Also, Moonlit Reunion only has 44k user ratings which makes it even more rare because top 5 the drama should have at least 100K user count, yet it currently has the second-highest level of attention and engagement from Douban users.

So, the girl who is shown in reuters with Xu Kai in red dress is Zhang Hui Wen, the love interest of Xu Kai?That's…
It’s incredible how Xu Kai’s dramas consistently perform well without any promotion or hype. I came across a comment on MDL on another drama where someone thought it was airing soon—just because the promotion had been so intense and was surprised to find out, it had only just wrapped filming! What a contrast.

Thanks for identifying her. I looked her up on MDL. At 21, Zhang Hui Wen was discovered by renowned director Zhang Yimou, who cast her in the lead role of Coming Home, opposite the legendary Gong Li, which is very impressive.

Seems like a complex character I still can’t figure out what his character is like after all these interviews…
look below
"Xu Kai says. For him, THE EXPERIENCE MATTERS MORE THAN WINNING OR LOSING. The character’s story arc is filled with dramatic turns, and when it came time to act, he found the process “mentally exhausting.” “It was truly, deeply heartbreaking,” he adds. Xu Kai described the experience as “IMMENSELY SATISFYING.” For him, it was a completely new challenge — a role for which none of his previous experience could offer any help. He watched a great number of documentaries, from those on psychology to criminal case files, to enrich the character."

Probably shoes? Or maybe he’s standing on a platform?
To me, height is unrelated to mature/older.

"Chen Hui — a young man... who once lived a joyful life with a happy family... he was forced onto a winding path... From the moment Chen Hui stepped into crime, it was one step after another down into the abyss.... he began to suffer from insomnia, nightmares, panic, helplessness, trembling, and avoidance in his gaze whenever he saw his father or anyone else… then came the anxiety, and finally, a calm and clear-headed approach to dealing with everything.... The film posed a major psychological challenge for Xu Kai — how to portray a mental breakdown during the act of wrongdoing, and a sense of helpless confusion upon returning to a clear-headed state."
