I’ve always wanted to watch this but the tragedy tag always deterred me because I can’t stand heartbreaks.…
The King's Woman is one of my favorites, can I ask why you dropped it at episode 17? Sometimes people just don't click with a drama and other's do! I've had the same problem with "The Untamed" and "Nirvana in Fire". Both drama's people love, but I can't seem to click with the story, or the character's. I'm going to try them again soon, but I never had that problem with "The King's woman" I even lost sleep over it due to binge watching.....I kept telling myself just one more episode then I'll go to bed lol.

Some click and some don't : )

Is this hard to watch? Because im not into tragedy genre TT
It's genre classification has tragedy listed, so you should be crying your eyes out at the end. If you don't like having your heart broken and you don't like crying a lot then I suggest you stay well away from this drama! But, if you decide you want to watch a love story that will stay with you for a lifetime no matter the outcome then I strongly suggest you give it a go : )

Thank you for the comment! It's great that you enjoyed it. Yes, mainstream media tend to stick to political narratives.…
Yeah, I went onto the Youtube link in the article and looked for "Love, Love, My Love" on the list, but it wasn't available. I'll find it somewhere, but until then I will watch "The Flower Girl" as you suggested.

I'll admit I'm not a very politically inclined person to begin with and my opinion regarding a country I know very little about is quite frankly irrelevant lol I have an interest in their heritage and history though. I agree, I think every country in the world has positive/negative aspects to them.

Excellent article and very informative. I have done some light research myself into North Korean film, media and propaganda. Basically anything that gives me a better insight into their history, and the people, but nothing to the degree you have both done- very impressive!

Most mainstream information only paints one picture of NK and majority of the media only cover political narratives. I will watch some of these drama's/movies you have suggested to gain some insight into an almost isolated country. I am a self confessed history buff, and I appreciate the fact I have the oppurtunity to learn about their culture as it was and is now. I love historical romance, so I think I'll start with "Love, Love, My Love" even though it was directed by a hostage at the time!

This article is a well executed introduction that you have both given us into the North Korean entertainment industry.

After reading this article I think I am going to watch this, I like some comedy in a historical drama. Having a few funny characters breaks up all of the seriousness and I also like watching drama's where the female characters have to disguise themselves as men for a while, but I've never watched one where the roles were reversed! I am looking forward to seeing how I feel about a strong male lead playing the part of a gentle lady, but also maintaining their male attributes. The article suggests he does this very well, so I am even more intrigued now.

Title General and I Spoiler
Haha, you really have a diabolical mind! I had a good chuckle reading your ideas about the roles you think Angelababy…
The love triangle is one of the main features in this drama and it lasts until the very last episode! It's one sided though because she only ever loves one of them, but the other guy just won't take no for an answer! He technically owns her at the start, and basically told her they would marry one day, but that doesn't go quite to plan when she meets Wallace Chung! I never felt like she loved the guy who was technically her master, she was just going to do it because her loyalty was with him at the start.

Yes, the couple marry eventually in secret.

I think she has the same amount of time with both ML's, but maybe selfishly I wanted more time with the main couple. The time they are together is very sweet, it's just that other guy always separates them. Sometimes she leaves him to protect him or it's part of her strategical plan.

The love triangle wasn't really an issue for me because there is never a question who she really loves, the other guy just never gives up trying to obtain her until the very end. I hope this helps : )

First of all, let me just say that it's as if you read my mind, put my thoughts into words and wrote this article…
Thank you so much for your kind words, they made me smile : ) I wrote this article from my own perspective hoping it would resonate with other people out there who were just as obsessed as myself with historical romance lol I am also a self-confessed history buff, so I can totally relate to your obsession. I haven't met anyone in my life that is interested in various different cultures throughout history, but there's just something about the past that fascinates me.

Now this is freaky, but I basically watched all the drama's you listed in the exact same order!! "The General and I" was where it all started for me too! It was recommended to me on another streaming site completely unrelated to what I was watching and I thought I would give it a go which was one of the best decisions of my life I can honestly say. It's been an addiction ever since lol

The soundtracks are amazing your right, I completely forgot about them when writing the article. I listened to "Goodbye my Princess" soundtrack today while I was cooking! I was fine until the little fox song came on, luckily I was cutting onions at the time lol I like all kinds of music from all over the world, but I hadn't really explored Chinese, Japanese, Korean....etc music until I started watching these dramas and now I love it. I have an entire playlist dedicated to the music, I love watching people play the Zither and Guzheng on Youtube.

I have modern romance drama's on my list, but I haven't watched any yet. I don't even watch modern drama's in my own country because it just doesn't interest me especially if it's a love story.

Have you seen "The Story of Ming Lan" yet? I also just finished "The Story of Yanxi Palace" which was great you might want to check that one out too! Once again thanks for reading the article, I'm happy to have met yet another person who loves historical romance. Oh, and as you can tell I don't mind long messages either lol : )

Having multiple concubines was mainly to ensure the Emperor had an abundance of children because infants died…
Yeah, I understand people watch these drama's for all different kinds of reasons and finding a drama that really suits you can sometimes be hard. The Story of Ming Lan is one of my favorite drama's too! : ) It was a nice to see something based outside of the Palace within a normal family setting, well if you can call their family normal lol Did you find Ming Lan's father funny? I couldn't stop laughing at him and his outrageous desire to maintain his reputation : )

I am from Europe, so I know what you mean. Infant fatality throughout history was extremely high everywhere, and I think that was a big factor in them having lots of children back then in certain parts of the world. Europe has never really been known for it's large families and I think that also has something to do with the fact Europe is predominately Christian/Catholic which promotes loyalty to one spouse. If it were seen as a good thing to have more than one wife in these belief systems back then I think we would have seen an explosion in our birth rates too which would have far outweighed the infant deaths. We weren't producing as many children as them because the men in Europe only had one wife and she can only give birth to so many children if she survived the birth!

Do you think the succession shouldn't have been hereditary is that what you mean? How would you select a new King in an undemocratic society without hereditary succession?

Title Story of Yanxi Palace Spoiler
20 episodes i'm done, this is not for me. I can't understand why others love this. I only like a few characters…
Having multiple concubines was mainly to ensure the Emperor had an abundance of children because infants died so easily back then, the continuation of the royal bloodline was one of the the most important roles for an Emperor to fulfill. No woman wants to share her husband especially if she loves him, but that was unfortunately the reality for a lot of women back then, and I watch historical romance drama's to have glimpses into what life was actually like for these women. The struggles, pain, heartache and sacrifices they all made to fulfill their duty to their families. They endured what some of us wouldn't be able to endure for a day never mind a lifetime.

If you give it another chance one day you might be surprised at what you find, I laughed quite a few times especially at the Emperor's Eunuch (who the Emperor frequently kicked up the behind or blamed for his own mistakes lol) The scene's between the Emperor and FL get funnier because she constantly irritates him, and deep down inside he loves that (it's actually really sweet) I can't say much more, but I hope you give it another chance.

Have you seen "The Story of Ming Lan" because if you haven't I think you would love that because the couple are very dedicated to one another : )

The king rules the whole world, but the queen rules over him, so who was the final ruler ?Be it the ancient times,…
well said....it's so true. Whoever holds the heart holds the power. Love is the most powerful and the most motivating emotion/feeling in the world. If you hold the most powerful man's heart in the palm of your hand you technically have the world in the palm of your hand.

thank you for writing this article! lately i've been very addicted in historical romance drama. this month i've…
Thank you! : )

I have also seen "Ashes of Love" and "The General and I" both were very good drama's. I haven't seen "Love by Hypnotic" yet, but I'll add it to my list if it's not on there already (I have so many lol) I know exactly what you mean about the intro to a drama that shows you everything that's going to happen, I don't know why they do that! I'm currently watching "The Story of Yanxi Palace" (it's really good!) and I have to skip the first 2 minutes because it shows you who she ends up with and everything! Luckily I skipped from the start, so I haven't actually seen who she ends up with which is great because it will be a surprise! lol

Awesome article! I really agree with your statement of " I love watching historical romance because the love feels…
Thanks for reading it, I'm happy you liked it : ) Yeah, they effect the heart so much because they have an all or nothing attitude to love in historical romance I think. I just love watching their relationship grow over time, every little encounter meant so much to them because they didn't have instant access to the person.

I was going to start "Princess Agents" after watching "The Story of Ming Lan" because I just loved Zanilia Zhao in that, but someone told me it has an incomplete ending which kinda put me off. I will watch it at some point, it's on my list. I'm hoping the story, cast, characters and costumes will make up for an ending that's left hanging in the air which is something I despise. "Bloody Romance" is also on my list, I'm trying to watch 5 at time lol

Thanks for the recommendations! : )

I wasn't a fan, but I do watch some Kpop from time to time on Youtube and I was checking out the articles to see this! I thought to myself isn't that the second one in the last few weeks, I remembered reading the article about Sulli on here too. It's just so sad that we are losing these young, beautiful and talanted women in such tragic circumstances. You truly have to be in a very dark place when taking your own life seems like the only way to end your suffering, and she suffered greatly it seemed. I read the multiple reports online and saw the pictures of what she went through. It really upset me.

A young girl killed herself in my country not that long ago because her ex bf posted an intimate picture of her around her highschool, and once again she was branded a girl of questionable morals. It often upsets me to see how women and girls treat each other especially online. We are all sisters no matter where we come from and we should support one another instead of trying to tear each other down all of the time. I don't understand why people are so critiical of one another when it comes to their looks, opinions or whatever the subject matter may be. It makes you feel good when your nice to people and they are nice to you in return.

I've seen some worrying things when it comes to Kpop like stars fainting on stage due to exhaustion/starvation/dehydration, the girls are weighed on a consistant basis and constantly pressured to fit the Kpop mold perfectly. Poor things can't just go shopping with their friends and go eat a burger for lunch. They are worked to death......whilst every move and breath they take is monitored by either managers or fans. I've never seen such critical people before, and maybe it comes from a place of love, or extreme idol expectations, but whatever it is it's damaging the very people they claim to want the best for!

I hope that she finds peace in death that she couldn't find in this life.

I love historical Chinese romance drama. It really is an addiction, I can’t resist. At first modern romance…
TMOPB aka "Eternal Love" is my favorite fantasy historical drama mainly because it was also my first in the fantasy genre, such a great love story. "Ashes of Love" was amazing and CGI was good too compared to what's out there.

"The General and I" is where it all began for me actually, it was my very first Chinese historical drama and I absolutely loved it. I also think it's underrated, but maybe I'm just biased because it was my first drama. It made such an impression on me I began searching for more dramas like these lol
