There might be more later on but up until ep 6 there's only a bdsm video the detectives find when they're looking for a suspect, as well as mentions of sexual assault. judging by the general theme, it's probably limited to stuff like that.
I really love Vic Chou's acting. I knew about him from The Flames' Daughters with Dilraba. His acting shines in…
idk if you already found the answer but in case anyone else is wondering: Dilraba is of uyghur descent (a turkic ethnic group) and Vic Chou's mother is atayal (an austronesian aboriginal group native to Taiwan). That probably explains why they don't look typically Han Chinese
I finally watched it and what a movie!!!! I left a review. Amazing performance from the main actors. Btw does…
Ahhh I accidentally deleted my comment. Sorry if you get this twice. The title is a nonsense word the main character made up when she misheard the word "yoridokoro" (= foundation/something to rely on) as a child and didn't understand the meaning. Kokoro means heart and tokoro place, so that explains why she was looking for something inside her (her "yurigokoro") instead of something external (if I remember correctly). So technically you can't really translate it because the creation of the world itself is part of the story

Kokoro means heart, yes, but yurigokoro is a nonsense word the main character made up when she misheard the word "yoridokoro" (= foundation/something you can rely on) and didn't understand the meaning. So technically, it's not translatable. You could only try to make up an equivalent. Like, Kokoro means heart and tokoro place, so that explains why she assumed it something inside instead of something external (if I remember correctly)
Burakumin are a topic I only know from university lectures because they're one of those things Japanese media just doesn't normally depict. Like, even for topics like zainichi Koreans or Japanese war crimes I've seen more, so I'm suuuper happy this movie exists.
so.... I didn't hate the drama. it anything, it's insanely average. but whyyyyyyyyyyy include romance????????? These high school sports dramas don't need romance and anyway, how about you pair Kimutaku up with women his own age???????
I love how this ends with them actually communicating and going to therapy, instead of the usual "love will cure everything!!!!!!"
That being said, Hao Ming didn't feel like a proper character. He was a plot device with some random bits slapped onto it (like, his love for space was the only personal thing we really knew about him). That sucked because his alternate universe version felt a lot more genuine with all its flaws, whether it was the unlit cigarettes, the car filled with trash or the pocket filled with condoms (like, idk if it was a translation issue but he said those were from when he went undercover weeks ago, so granted that's true, doesn't that imply he didn't wash his pants since then??? wtf?).
Randomly saw it at a movie festival and was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I didn't want it to end (which is something I can't say about 95% of the movies i watch)
I was so confused when I saw him on physical 100 because my first thought was that he looked Japanese, without knowing why. Now that I know he's a zainichi (which they obviously wouldn't mention on Korean TV) it makes so much more sense. I probably just saw him on Japanese TV somewhere.
It’s a theatrical movie, not a lengthy TV drama series, and it’s not a fluffy romance – well, those are…
I absolutely understand that reasoning and do think you're right in that it might be people coming in with different expectations, especially on MDL where romance kdrama fans are prevalent. Still, if you compare it i.e. to IMDB, the rating there isn't particularly high either and there you have a wider userbase. 6.1 isn't super low there but also not high, same as the rating here. As you said, even people who normally like this genre didn't necessarily like this movie, so I think it's also the movie itself that has issues.
So... Yeah, before I basically repeat what you already wrote... Thanks for the detailed explanation!

That doesn't answer the question though. Parasite isn't a fluffy romance drama either and has a high rating, so it's not like the question isn't legitimate. Personally I think the rating is low because the movie is messy but I obviously can't speak for anyone else.
This movie is packed with surprises and I'm not sure if I actually think that's a good thing.
I thought this was a simple little movie like Con Air, so when the whole human experimentation stuff started, I genuinely lost interest very quickly. It's been decades and imperial Japan is still to non-Japanese Asian movie makers what Nazi Germany is to the west. You can always slap a few of them into a movie when you need evil villains. Like, I don't think the super soldier thing was a bad idea per se (although imho stuff like that is overdone) but if a synopsis promises me criminals hijacking a ship, I'd like it to be about just that.
