I think what people should probably keep in mind is that this isn't a Korean movie but a (mostly) French movie set in Korea. The topic is very heavy and I think that this probably would have been handled differently if it was a 100% Korean production.
Otodokemono had a cool concept but I just couldn't bring myself to care about the characters. Nandakanda Ginza was weird and cute but the twist made it so much better because I kept wondering why money was an issue when the boy literally adopted a rich CEO. The ending changed the whole view and that's exactly the kind of thing I love YKM for. I also loved the ending of Melody no nosete because of course it would be that song! Haha Papa no denwa shiteru furi was sweet.
I hope it's a good sign that this got greenlit and that there will be more movies like this. The other day a Japanese friend literally told me that we don't know if the war crimes committed by Japan in WW2 happened at all because China and Korea could be lying about that, so I think it's super important that movies like this are made.
So I think it's arguable whether she is a better person than him because she is spiteful and likely has a drinking problem. But I'm sorry, I was cheering when she told him to break up and was frustrated when she again did his work. The woman cooks, works, types up the dude's manuscripts and does most of the child-raising. And literally one of the first things he says in the movie is that he's said about not being able to afford having an affair or consulting a sex worker. Wtf. That guy is absolute scum and while I didn't hate the movie, I hate the idea of constantly being fed this ideal where a woman is supposed to work her ass of so that a guy can live his dream and her being mean is in any way comparable to him being incompetent.
I like how, when you see Okada Masaki in something, there are essentially two ways his character could turn out. He's either a) a generally kind but not necessarily smart or interesting dude or he's b) batshit crazy evil scum.
All in all this movie made me remember why I don't watch more yakuza stuff. But, what I absolutely loved was the twist around Seshima. That was only possible because Hioka had dug himself into a complete hole. He had no one to trust and played this role of the super tough, invincible guy until he eventually believed himself to be that person. And then he was shown kindness and allowed himself a break and immediately got fucked.
I love the ending so much. In most stories the guy would have gotten a second chance but that really wouldn't have been fair. He only admitted to cheating when it was way too late. And I love that she absolutely respected him for his art and wanted that connection to the "sensei" but not the one to the husband who cheated on her.
What I found funny was that Kame's weird fake high school outfit + hair was how he used to look when he played actual high school students. It's such a weird 2005 look. You'd think that someone dressing like a high a school student for his high school fiancée would dress the way her peers do and not the way he did when he was in high school. But anyway, that gave me gokusen and nobuta flashbacks
He was in the class with level three so he must be inteligent or a good learner. Though he is more on the funny…
Yeah, true and that was honestly also why I found it hard to really connect to Pang. He was the Tenacious Hero but we never really understood his motivations. And some side characters were just ignored at times. We literally know almost nothing about the twins for example. But yeah, as you said, they focused on politics. It's important that stories like these are told but when you focus on the big picture, some details might end up missing.

You make a good point with that part from season 1! It's just that I personally felt that the way his character was written most of the time made it odd to think of him as having genius level intelligence (which was how I interpreted the audio revelation) and tbh, I wonder if the writers really thought about it on such a deep level. I think it's all a matter of interpretation. I can see the viewpoint of people who defend the character because yeah, I guess this could be a matter of different types of intelligence, but personally I just felt that there were small parts like that the writers probably didn't consider completely. And honestly, both seasons were great, so it's really just a small issue but when something is mostly really well-crafted, small things bother me

That is what they said in season 1, yes, and that made sense to me then. But in season 2 they said that they made sure that the audio could only be heard by individuals with a high IQ and that technically, everyone can be gifted if you play the other audio. So by that logic, the gifted weren't special, they were deemed as intelligent
Opinions are wildly divided in the one hahaha. I have to say, I might have liked this season better because it gave us more story and less romance but both seasons were honestly not that well-executed. I just really love the idea and wish this had been used for a big budget regular drama production instead of a BL with little funds. The idea behind it deserves better and could have been a proper thriller. What I also liked more about this is that it have us two mono characters. I really like Se Hyun because he's an antithesis to this believe that people need a soulmate. The drama constantly reminds us of how problematic this mono/probe thing is, so it would be cool to have a mono/mono endgame. But I've seen enough kdramas to know never to root for the SML, so I guess that's that...
