the age gap isn't the problem, it's that he raised them and then developed feelings. it's not even that he was also a kid at that point when he saved them, but there was a huge maturity gap there. if you raised two young children as an older person, even if they're now "of age" it's strange that you have any romantic connection

okay, so i didn't say he fell in love with them as kids, i meant that it's weird that he pretty much raised them as an older person and ended up marrying one who was already young enough when she met him as he was an adult, and him being in love LATER with the one who was even younger. regardless of the age gap 8-10 years is strange enough. the maturity difference between an 18-20 year old vs a 10 and 13 year old is stark, and so any romantic feelings past that point is like. weird. even if they grew up.
