not my cup of tea
I liked the webtoon version, but it eventually felt dragged out, so I dropped it. However, I decided to watch this drama anyway. I don't normally watch romance dramas, but this one was super cringey. There are many cliche moments and many "the-main-character-falls-and-someone-catches-her" moments that I found really repetitive. There were at least two in every episode. It also seems very unrealistic and the episodes are very similar/repetitive. I'll still finish it so I can give my final thoughts.TW: suicide (in the kdrama)

Funny, but lost interest
This drama has a empowering theme and talks about bullying and the resulting effects bullying can have on a person. Beauty is only skin deep. At first, I really did like the drama--it was cute, funny, and refreshing. The character development was nice and the gradual relationship build was good. However, I have to admit the story itself is cliché and predictable--which I did not mind at first, but the story started getting drawn out and I found myself having lost interest by episode 9-10. Then, I ended up dropping it altogether at episode 12. Perhaps, not the drama for me. Other people who enjoy the light-hearted, fluffy-wholesomeness, slow-paced may enjoy it more. Was this review helpful to you?

Average
The drama is fine and easy enough to watch. I thought the male leads were cast well. Mun Ka-Young was good as the female lead, although I struggle something with her characters aegyo, it starts to feel unbelievable. However the story is lacking, I don’t understand how they can set up a whole story line around mistaken identity when the main actress looks exactly the same pre and post transformation. The romance plot felt like it could have wrapped up earlier than it did which made it feel like it was dragging on a bit by the end.Was this review helpful to you?
True comedy
Another favourite. The fml actress is hilarious in her role. The second lead was a heartthrob and a half. The overall concept and story felt original to me. The song though.. that damn song that plays in almost every episode? It got to my damn nerves. I don't want to hear it ever again! It wan not that good either. At last, the drama shows a lot of important societal issues. Was this review helpful to you?
One of those that made me smile, alot
This is reminded me of a 1940's screwball comedy, and really you have to forget it's supposed to be a high school rom com. Some of the comedy scene's, the one in the lift rivals Rachael and Samantha, are memorable. The rewatch value is mainly for those scenes.
Yes you have 20-30 somethings playing teenagers, and the sad backstory, The leads are all good actors, so its polished.
I never believe in love triangles, so the fact there was one is just a plot device and you have to go with it.
Who ever did the set dressing for the book shop and the family home deserves an award, I could smell the rooms, they looked lived in, so they were not acting in something that looked like a set.
Just submit to the genre and have some fun.

Hilarious & a Classic Cliche
The drama excels in its dialogue and delivery, the acting is superb and the show is hilarious. Several laugh out loud moments additionally several moments where I cried too. I felt for Joogyung and was extremely happy for you when she realised her self-worth and inner-beauty. Story is filled with a bunch of cliches but executed really well.I would say the drama goes extremely well up until around episode 12, which is why I rated the rewatch value at a 6 because I'd watch it up until then. After ep 12 I no longer felt the hype and would watch the show several days after release. The storyline was a bit of a drag. The last two episodes were disappointing, I'm satisfied with the ending however the episodes were not needed, the pace was off. It felt like they were fitting so many things into the episodes.
OST was alright, it wasn't impactful, didn't add anything to the scenes but some of the songs were catchy.

WTF was I thinking ?! My brain cells were dying while watching this bullshit!
Honestly speaking, this is crap!Absolutely extremely over-rated! This has such good rating and was recommended by so many youtubers and reviewers!
First and foremost, Cha Eun Woo cannot act. Its like he attends the "Lee Min Ho school of acting". No matter how pretty his costar is he kisses like a dead fish. I cant believe he has the leading role in so many shows. His character was the typical teen J-drama male lead. He was just like her bullies. He found out her secret so began bullying her and blackmailing her. He was that typical asshole who uses the girl he likes as a slave and it makes no sense why she would fall for him. That was sick and toxic to watch him treat her so badly for trying to fit in with people and follow the standard of beauty. He kept being his terrible self even after they began dating. He is controlling, obsessive, possessive and chauvinist. Her identity comes from dating him, f*cking hell was that.
I pitied her so much at first. Even her mother treats her so badly and now this d*ck who has natural beauty is bullying her as well. But later on she became that typical pathetic girl who goes and apologizes to the guy when he was clearly wrong. how dare he say her to quit her job and command her to stop hanging out with her friend. This drama made me feel like I had travelled back in time when would have to ask forgiveness from their husbands for disobeying them.
Seriously, I cant believe this show is by the same makers as Extraordinary You. Now that's a good show. HARU, that's how a male lead of a teen drama should be.
The second female lead was so cool at first but then became that typical bitch. WTF seriously WTF!!! Why are second female lead always a two-dimensional character in teen dramas?!
I thought we had evolved from this kind of toxic masculinity where the guys fight over a girl without asking her what she wants. I guess this is where the second lead redeems himself because when both guys are fighting on the field the main guy says the second lead to give but second lead says her opinion is what matters. Despite being the school bad boy the second lead never bullies her or blackmails her. Although he approached her for the wrong reasons but he still stands up for her, supports her and treats her well. So he is your typical second lead, whose job is to give you second lead syndrome, that's all. This was the worst 2020-2021 show I have seen so far.
I am so disappointed to see this as a successful show as its like a show K-drama from the 2000s or something. Cha Eun Woo's character in "My ID is Gangnam Beauty" is so much better despite his bad acting.
What a waste of time! PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THIS.

Really problematic and overall dated plot that does not hold up
I guess it is clear to say that this drama had an insane amount of hype due to the popularity of the webtoon. The webtoon itself is also poorly written so I didn't expect much from the drama. The only positives were that the cast matches the characters in the webtoon really well! That being said...... the rest is a trainwreck. The drama is problematic as the FL is deemed "ugly" because her cheeks are red, she has some pimples and she wears glasses. This plotline is too tropy so it doesn't make any sense that she gets so severely bullies just for that. I also hate the character development of Suho, he straight up becomes her stalker towards the end. He seems to have these obsessive tendencies which just don't sit well with me. In my opinion, the support actors were more entertaining to watch. If you like the actors or the webtoon then you might be able to get through this but it was pretty difficult for me.Was this review helpful to you?

Comfort drama <3
I have been a faithful reader of the webtoon since a year ago and always waited for them to pick it up and release a kdrama based on it. I fell in love with the cast choice since the beginning, they were so spot on on every character, specially Seo Jun and Su Ho. I have to say that even if i enjoyed Gayoung as Im Ju Gyeong, she's so beautiful that I never saw that much change between Ju Gyeong with or without makeup ;_;.I knew that despite being so cliché I was gonna love it and that's what happened, I was waiting every single week for the release of new episodes and I was very pleased with the whole plot til the end. The show did it very well entertaining wise, I never skipped a single scene and that's really never common on me that I usually watch lots of dramas and tend to skip unnecessary scenes. This time every character here was fun to watch, especially Ju Gyeong's sister and brother storyline, they were so funny I couldn't stop laughing every time they were on the screen. I even loved the parents scenes. Of course, my fave character has always been Seo Jun, he is lovely both here and in the webtoon. I truly felt so sad at how dirty they did to Seo Jun in the kdrama storyline. Knowing what actually happens in the webtoon, that it's the complete opposite, I guess the Suho-Ju Gyeong ship really fit the kdrama plot they were hinting since the beginning so I have no complaints because it was also lovely to see their relationship and how they made Ju Gyeong very loyal to her feelings with no stupid doubts regarding both Seo Jun and Su Ho, lovely to see that.
The OST was amazingly chosen, I made a playlist to listen to it because the songs ended up stuck in my head the entire day after watching an episode. I'm In The Mood For Dancing has been my jam since its release, and all the songs sang by Cha Eun Woo, Hwang In Yeop and Cha Ni!!! A blessing I'd say.
I don't mind if this review is a bit biased ( I already loved the cast (big fan of Eun Woo here) and story before it even started) because since it didn't disappointed me and made me feel very happy every week I gave this kdrama a higher rating than I expected. I am definitely gonna rewatch this from time to time whenever I need something light and happy to space out. Definitely gonna be sad knowing that I won't get new episodes from now on. Good job True Beauty team!!!! I'll be looking forward to the cast next projects <3 <3 (might have turned into Hwang In Yeop enthusiast after this)

It's fluffy cute and targeting important issues within coming of age. There's neither drive nor pure chill, the pace is a constant progressing with little exceptions, which makes it enjoyable even towards the end. The show is long, but the end isn't bad because it is dragged out. There is even a sense of accomplishment in the final details: everything achieved was worked for at length. Despite being entertaining, there are shortcomings. The character development is very strong up to the point where the first main conflict is resolved. From then on however, there's only repetition in a less convincing way: Trouble overcome is part of the past only, but never comes back - idealising and wrong. The soundtrack is plain, but effective, sadly it's very one-sided when it comes to actual 'story'-songs. The camera-work does nothing special. Everything is filmed smooth to the point, where you forget, that there is actually thought in the process of capturing a story. Never do the pictures express a part of the story, feelings, etc. themselves. There is no artsiness in the way the pictures are created whatsoever. The color-codes of the scenes are well composed, however implausible and often over-isolated. While introducing Ju Kyung through metal, there soon is a replacement: fluffy romantic harmless ballads, bittersweet, but one-dimensional. The two male leads have personality and a great dynamic. Facing the destined (not) to be theirs, they fall into the classic 'boyfriend material' trope, being less more than a puppy on a princess' lap. A lot of drama is introduced through Hospitalisations, which isn't elegant really. The story is, setting the romance aside, about realising one's goal, both in the sense of awareness and achievement. Sadly, the outcome (dream come true) is only shown symbolically through the found respect of significant non-romantic others (Ju Kyungs Sister and the fans for the boys, Her Idol for Ju Kyung). The to be realised dream of becoming a makeup artist is a necessary act of emancipation against the discourse of the 'natural beauty hierarchy'. Given the Korean beauty industry being highly competitional, it isn't an easy dream. There is a found inner beauty which is presented as important. The achievement of the inner beauty then directly transforms into outer beauty (makeup), which reverses the emancipating act. While the bigger sister is an absolute gender-exchange case, having no hybridity in the spectrum, manliness in character, beauty in the looks, Im Ju Kyung is just a feminine girl. Fitting the role of the girl seems to be more important, than overcoming boundaries. The only meant to be occupation of doing makeup is highly problematic, since it separates manly and feminine occupations. Why no male make-up artist in the whole show? Why not a female musician? Why is the rich guy getting the poor girl`? Where is the dad of Lee Su Ho in the end? And a last remark on the wedding: I guess one can say, the grandeur is Korean. It's pure kitsch, a badly mixed up Disney-wonderland tape. All the Korean traditional elements seem lost, except from the traditional dress of the mother. It's hard to believe, they stay true to tradition in food, but are western to the extent of 4th order simulacra, when it comes to a wedding. All together, worth the watch, instructive, emotionally confronting, but far from being a perfect show. It could and should have been more adventurous. Was this review helpful to you?
A MUST WATCH FOR KDRAMA LOVERS
I never really liked watching k dramas but after watching this drama i fell in love with it. The film was really nice i loved the family relationship every thing in the film was amazing. One thing i really wished they did was make Seo jun gind someone that he liked but everything else was amazing i have watched it more than 3 times it's really amazing. Was this review helpful to you?
crap, completely different from the webtoon, cringe & too cliche
spoiler warning if you haven’t read webtoonok so i finished true beauty and honestly i liked the first 8 or so eps and then it just became a really crappy and inaccurate time skip in which seojun gets completely rejected and suho disappears for only 5 seconds and then comes right back like a cockroach 🐕. they changed way too many things and it’s a completely different story to the webtoon where they don’t even give seojun a chance and they don’t build suho and jugyeong’s relationship to the point where it feels like two strangers off the street are snogging 😀. it was way too rushed and the display of suhos character was crap and it completely ignored the webtoon.
i was really disappointed with this and the only reason i continued watching was hwang in yeop. best actor there + best played character
