Great story

This story had she is the man vibe! A girl who unexpectly change to a boy and became a icehockey player. FL did a great job acting like a guy. All the cast had a great chemistry. I really liked how the ML used his facial expression. It was on point! And the sound from the cat was really funny.

The icehockeyteam members where all really great. They all had there own rol. Also the relationship between the coach and uncle from ML was a nice extra.
When you watch this you will slowly fall in love with the main couple.

Cute but not cringy

I'm sick and tired of the cutesy cdramas where the girl is a complete brainless ditz and the guy is a super achiever, super handsome ass who has never heard of manners or consent.

But this show despite being 'cute' is alot of fun and has surprisingly alot of depth. The girl has spunk, grit and has great growth outside of the love angle. Her focus is not on getting the 'master' to love her. In fact he is the one who keeps looking for her attention so we are spared the customary fawning over the male lead. Despite the outlandish premise, the characters feel like real people.

The acting is also good. Both the leads can act well.
The actress does not go into the annoying cringy territory and pulls off comedy with ease. Also all these cold tsundre type of characters are usually played with actors with zero skills who think barking at the girl and having no facial expressions is acting. But here the actor is wonderful. He has amazing expressions and does not let the character fall into the cliche category.

In the last month I've seen atleast 10 super popular young love cdramas (lockdown) and 90% of them are just rubbish. This one is good. Really good. Not a complete 10 bec the last 3-4 episodes are useless, sappy, and badly written. But everything before that is A+

An Ice Hockey Romance That Hits All the Right Notes

Review:
"My Unicorn Girl" came galloping into my watchlist as a light-hearted, fun romance with just the right amount of sports and drama. The premise is pretty unique—Sang Tian (played by the energetic Darren Chen) enters the male-dominated world of ice hockey by disguising herself as a man. What made this drama stand out for me was how it managed to balance humor, romance, and personal growth with an inspiring story of a girl defying expectations.

Sang Tian’s character is awesome—she’s not the typical shy, demure female lead. She’s got dreams, she’s determined, and she doesn’t let anything stop her, even when the odds are stacked against her. Every time she faced a challenge, I was like, “You go, girl!” Her journey of self-discovery and fighting for her place on the ice felt empowering, and her chemistry with the male lead, Wen Bing (played by the swoon-worthy Chen Xingxu), was so sweet. The romance was slow-burn and perfectly executed, especially because both characters supported each other’s growth instead of just existing as a plot device for each other.

What I absolutely loved about this drama was how it showcased team spirit and the bonds that form through shared experiences. The ice hockey team had a great sense of camaraderie, and I loved how they supported Sang Tian even though she wasn’t “one of them” in the beginning. The interactions between the teammates, particularly the back-and-forth with the rest of the team, had me chuckling. The friendships in the show were so heartwarming, and it made the romance feel even more grounded.

The only thing I wish for was a bit more depth for some of the side characters. While the main couple was fantastic, the supporting characters felt a bit underdeveloped. I would have loved to see more of the teammates’ stories or a bit more conflict around Sang Tian’s disguise—swoosh, there could have been so much more drama there!

Final Thoughts:
"My Unicorn Girl" is a sweet and empowering series for anyone looking for a blend of sports, romance, and personal growth. It’s the kind of drama that’ll make you smile, punch the air in victory with the characters, and have you rooting for Sang Tian every step of the way. Highly recommend if you’re in the mood for a light, feel-good story with a lot of heart.

watching it again!

This drama is so sweet and fluffy, refreshing and light-hearted, that i just cannot stop revisiting it! It's not realistic in the traditional sense - but who in his/her right mind expects realism in the world of drama?
I mean, how can it possibly happen for a petite girl to become the captain of an all-male ice hockey team? Really! Still the actors are so handsome and funny, the story so engaging, that it doesnt matter if its crazy or not. Even the side stories are nice - if you can spare time for them, because we have, beside the 1st couple, the 2nd couple, the 3rd couple, even the 4th couple (that is, the FL's brother, the FL's friend, the ML's cousin etc). I admit i skipped a lot through these.
The ML and FL are both very good-looking and their story is sweet (did i repeat the word sweet?) with a lot of love games. So much fun to watch!

Short, sweet and cute

Initially this series attracted my attention was cause of "unicorn" (I totally love unicorns =D) and the 2nd was that Darren Chen was in it (I first watched his series was Meteor Garden and really liked his acting). Overall, after watching the drama, my conclusion would be that it is a very cute and adorable series with very little "drama" or those "stressy" moments. If you are looking for something really light, no excessive drama / evil plots, this would be something you can watch -for a first watch. If it is worth re-watching, you would have to decide on your own upon completion.

Both the male and female lead are quite adorable together, be it when they are pranking each other or the short adorable "romantic" moments. True, a twist of fate and both of them actually met and ended up with each other, but the process till the very end is quite funny to watch. It is fun to watch how the Male Lead actually cares for the Female Lead but tries to make it as subtle as possible without exposing that she is actually female instead of a male. The tenderness in him is so adorable. I love how the Female Lead tries promoting team work and helps others despite the outcome or the punishment. Despite what many commentators wrote, I find that she is quite good with this character and shouldn't be shot down over minor facts - i.e not good in ice skating / ice hockey.

No one is born ever knowing everything - including actors. Many actors and actresses do have to go through various trainings and teachings just to be able to film the movie or series that they starring in. People shouldn't be so quick to judge, comment or even condemn another just cause they aren't superb in a particular action / sport of the series they are watching!

The music is alright. Some of the songs paired to this series is quite nice to listen to. Would definitely look up the songs and check it out.

The story starts off with a male lead that's a hockey star that seems arrogant but isn't really and your average cinderella female lead that is just trying to live her life and fulfill; not so much a promise, but a quest she's given herself to fill her mom's shoes. The two cross paths and the rest is history. They're connected in every way; they bond really well, they have great chemistry, but like most cross dressing drama's, she's a "guy" for a majority of the show lol even though it's just something that's obvious and well, it's fine because honestly it worked out, everyone was nice about it, I really liked how the story flowed; I was laughing out loud and cheesing like crazy at a lot of the parts; so even though it was truly a really slow burning romance, the chemistry was there, the feelings were there and all in all, it was a great and positive watch.

I adore Darren Chen; after watching him in Meteor Garden, I've never been disappointed. I've seen him in reality shows and he's just good with his emotions and he was all around a goofy guy. Absolutely blown away by Sebrina Chen's acting, I've never seen her in anything I don't think and she was so positive and up beat; she played such a good actress and I loved the two together. Oh man, I really really liked everyone; even though some people didn't, I enjoyed the side stories. Li Jiu Lin played a great "best friend" lmao, I loved the brother and best friend; they were so supportive, I even kinda liked the annoying figure skater girl Na Na. And let's give it up for my girl Zhang Yu Xi that honestly played just a small part but she played such a big impacted part for our main lead; she's such a good actress in everything she does, it was a nice add on to this show.

I liked the music, it was a switch up between an average OST but then throwing in some English, it was kinda a banger tbh.

I don't think I would rewatch it right away but I would; when I need something goofy, fluffy, a pick me up show.

As a drama watching vet; this is your average, cliche, cross dressing drama but it's honestly such a classic story and feel; that it just feels right. Lol. I was thoroughly surprised how much I enjoyed this show because it was really like a filler but it was something even more over the top. It was overall...just good. I was laughing, I was surprised, I was bingeing the whole show; I literally was like on ep 5 and suddenly I'm ony ep 16 because I just kept watching it all day long. It was an easy watch, it was entertaining, it was a nice change away from wanting to take a break, it made me want to keep watching more shows on my list

A simple but touching story

The drama can be a little cliche but the story is very sweet. A very simple storyline, quite predictable but wasn't boring at all. I think the cinematography and screenplay was done very well, which was probabaly how this simple story was still very entertaining. It's a perfect definition of rom-com and I loved every couple on there they were all really cute! I loved how everyone there got their own happy ending with their own loved one. The acting too was really really good. I personally loved the cast, they had great chemistry and everything felt so easy going and time flew by before I knew it. Loved seeing them grow together. The music was not my fav but pretty touching. I probably wouldn't re-watch this but it is definitely worth watching once. Overal very easy-going, fun and touching drama. 🏫⛸ 🏒👩🏻➡️🧑🏻

Heart Fluttering Cliche

Let me start by saying that this is the first Chinese drama out of so many where the cross-dressing seems quite reasonable and for once the girl looked weird when she dressed like one. Every episode for me was a cliff hanger and although the pace of the story was extremely slow, I did not feel bored at all.

I started watching this show without any sort of expectations and god I was so not disappointed. I do agree that there is little to no character development out there plus the story's out of the world sort of thing but that's the very reason I like it cause although we know that fairy tales never come true we still do watch them. This drama definitely had its flaws but the actors did justice to it. The romance in it was slow burned and the story had lots of ups and downs but they were again not properly portrayed. In conclusion, I believe that this drama was meant to be the fluffy type without so many emotional roller coaster and they managed to convey the messages that they wanted to. Plus, I fell in love with the OSTs.

It's just about people falling in love and chasing their dreams and the storyline was just so so but I will definitely say that my heartbeat went faster every time I watched this and I just couldn't stop smiling even when there were emotional scenes(which is definitely not a good thing).

And I must mention that I fell in love with Darren Chen and Sabrina Chen after watching this. All this drama has to offer is the great chemistry between those two leads, the amazing friendship and the OST, a special mention for that. XD

One of my favourite University C drama

Overall I enjoyed the story plot. Although the story lines sound unreal and abit exaggerating but it surprised me with the amazing acting and how the characters made me laughed out loud. I also liked the little story of each character and how they worked hard to fulfill their dream and passion for ice hockey.
This is definitely one of my favourite C drama involving university, sports and sweet romance.
This drama managed to balance well between the love stories, friendship, competition,. At least I did not see part of the story that makes me fustrated or angry.
Please watch if you like sweet romance, comedy, university or sports related drama.

Stepping on banana peels all year round!

I'm sure by now everyone heard about this drama being a huge clichefest. That is naturally true. Sang Tian just kept falling into Wen Bing's arms. That "oh no I fell onto your lips" thing happened FOUR times in this drama and there were uncountable fall related hugs and whatnot throughout the entire show. Of course there were other miscellaneous cliche/corny scenes too, but somehow the second hand embarrassment levels were kept below my nerve threshold.
Despite the ridiculous premise and everything else the writers did a competent job at keeping my interest & they made the cliches bearable, the drama had soul, even at the story level. I'm no genderbender expert, but to me it feels like this is a new take in the genre. In typical genderbenders the girl keeps changing the disguise all the time & the ML gets to interact with the girl as if she were two different persons. In MUG however she is in her boy getup 95% of the time. The creators made her still look girlish intentionally. Obviously it's not realistic that no would realize she is not a boy with all that lipstick & visible breasts. However against all odds it just works. The drama never taking itself seriously certainly helps to keep the magic alive and finally when we reach the end it feels really gratifying to see her finally posing as a girl. (yep the ending is pretty great)
It's really nice that there is no real love triangle and even the OTP's only obstacle is dealt with fairly quickly and painlessly.
The casting choices were great, the leads had great chemistry & the supporting actors were on point as well.

My biggest gripe with the drama is the story flow. It just took way too long for the plot to progress. The second half of the drama is way better than the first half. Episodes 5 to 15 don't contribute much in advancing the story. I'm not saying those episodes are not entertaining, however there is certainly quite a bit of repetitive plot and I felt they were just draggy.
All the second couples were great, but unfortunately they had very little screen time.

I don't know much about hockey, but the matches & practice sessions seemed interesting enough. There are obvious problems that even I noticed, but I felt that those did not detract much from my enjoyment. (Sang Tian barely has arms, but she hits like supergirl; camera tricks to hide the fact that most actors are no skating experts etc)

The cinematography was just incredibly beautiful. In cdramas background obliteration is a recurring problem, but in MUG the beautiful sets were properly shown to us in all their splendor before going for that creamy close up shot and even those were tastefully executed. I've seen quite a few cdramas, but I think this one is the prettiest one yet.

And finally the issue of Elvis Li aka Huang Hao Ran is a bit baffling. I have not double checked this, but to me it seems he was only inserted into the drama at the halfway point in a really arbitrarily manner. He came out of nowhere, but suddenly he had a rather important role, he did overact as well. I don't know why they did this, but my theory is that perhaps My Unicorn Girl 2 is already in the pipeline & Elvis Li will be a significant character in that drama. (like what they did with Wu Bai in GGS1)

TLDR: The show may be a bit draggy early on, but overall it was very entertaining & there is zero angst, so 8/10.
