After rewatching the drama
My review mainly arose while rewatching the drama, when you begin to notice new details in the actors' performances, and in this case, it will be dedicated to the transformations of actor Dylan Wang.
Dylan Wang's complete immersion into the character from the very first episode. He plays a tactical and calculating ruler who must quickly adapt to unexpected circumstances without losing his edge. One misstep could have turned Dongfang Qingcang into a cliched comedy villain, but Dylan maintains the perfect balance of restraint and subtle menace. While the first episodes may seem too fairytale-like, the underlying psychological tension between the main characters is incredibly mature and intense. Dylan's immersion is profound because he plays not rage, but cold calculation. Trapped in a body dependent on a weak fairy, he finds tactical solutions at every moment. Dylan Wang maintains balance in his interactions with the Orchid in the tower. A single degree of error and it would have turned into farce. But he uses subtle facial expressions—a barely perceptible squint, a heavy sigh, a rigid posture—that remind the viewer: this is a predator, not a guy from a romantic comedy. This underscores his dramatic talent at a professional level. In the world of drama, the trope of "hate to love" or "forced cooperation" is popular. But Dylan grasps this role so well that his character, even submitting to Orchid's whims (to avoid his own death), never loses his dignity and core. He doesn't stoop to the level of silly comedy; he wages his own internal war. Dongfang Qingcang awakens in an alien, changed world, deprived of his former absolute power, and now cursed to a fragile, weak fairy. He has no time for long deliberations—the cold, strategic mind of a ruler kicks in. Dylan's performance at this moment is astounding: there's no confusion in his eyes. Dylan plays a character who calculates his moves instantly, adapts to Orchid's whims, hides his true nature, and yet maintains the majesty of a king in exile. It's an incredibly deep dive into the character: showing strength through forced restraint and swift action. In "Orchid," especially in the early episodes, the balance was perfect. Dylan Wang maintained the focus with his composure, intelligence, and the iron will his character exerted to conquer any chaotic circumstance.

EPISODE 11 AND 12 AREN'T SO GOOD

Episode 11 and 12 arent so good. Dylans acting is fine. But i am not satisfied with this episodes i hope they can give justice to the plot in the upcoming episodes. I was like starting to drop this entire series. haayyss

Moon tribe palace is heavily guarded but Chenghang and the founder of Haishi City can easily surpass and enter without any difficulties. tssk. I really like the first 10 episode. I was wondering if they'll sustain the hype with upcoming but episode 11 an and 12 arent satisfying instead it was a dissapointment.

An entertaining xianxia

This drama is not perfect by any means, but it is an entertaining xianxia with some elements that make it stand out from some of the more bland offerings in the genre, so despite its flaws, for me it’s worthwhile. However, I’m speaking as someone who read the novel and has been looking forward to this drama, so that may make me somewhat biased in favor of the drama.

Unfortunately the biggest flaw may be the writing of the female lead. In about 40% of her scenes, she’s either pathetic or annoying. The actress playing her doesn’t help by making some truly bad choices—lots of flouncing, pouting, etc.—but these things are in line with the way the character is written, so I’m not sure I can blame the actress.

The male lead is better but the actor playing him is rather limited in his abilities. He does well when the male lead is being fearsome and majestic. He becomes bland and boring in most scenes when the male lead is interacting with the female lead.

The costumes for the drama are puzzling. The male lead’s costumery is fantastic. The female lead’s gowns are frumpy, baggy, dumpy, and ill-fitting. Headpieces for many male characters are ornate and interesting, going far beyond the usual bun holder crown style. You get the sense that the costume designer cared a lot about what the male characters were wearing, and then maybe wanted to keep the female characters well covered up? I don’t know, I’m hoping the costumes improve.

Production values are VERY HIGH, to rival any other big budget xianxia you have seen when it comes to effects and sets. If you can watch this drama in 1080p on a very large screen, DO SO.

In terms of plot…I don’t want to say much b/c I want to avoid spoilers. So I’ll put it this way: it seems like the drama may have cut out some of the best parts of the novel, or maybe is saving them for later, it’s hard to tell. It has certainly diverged from the novel, and not, in my opinion, in great ways. BUT the writing is very cohesive and the storytelling is highly competent.

Absolutely love it. Its been by far the best love story ive come across. I felt every emotion alongside the characters. When they loved, i loved, when they cried, i cried. Ive been on the edge of my seat from beginning to thus far. I cannot wait to see how it all ends, but at the same time im terrified to know. I am praying for love to conquer all in this. This is a series i will definitely watch again once all episodes are released. The leads were perfect, the support roles on spot. Though at times i wish they could see the truth staring at them in their faces, i understand its a work of fiction and portrays an era of magic and fantasy. Like i said, its an amazing series to watch. The roller-coaster of emotions that one goes through from beginning to end is absolutely worth it. Im not one to write reviews on movies or anything, but some are definitely worth the cause. Love between fairy and devil, was definitely worth it.

Not For Me But...

I'm dropping the series mostly because even up through episode 8, the action aspect of the plot never picked up pace. And personally really dislike the typical romance stories with overly innocent and useless women. What's worse is the rest of the other women so far have been portrayed as either being just as useless, full of drama, evil, and/or manipulative. This is very typical of the old-school ideal of Asian romance and couple portrayal. Poor woman/rich man, innocent and sweet woman/powerful and misunderstood man, attached with unrealistically cute voices that belong to girls who haven't gone through puberty.

But for those who love these types of sappy stories, I can see why this one is on the higher-rated end and would definitely recommend. Personally I was putting up with the heavy romance scenes for while hoping the action and backstories would pick up at some point but it's been a slow burn.

the FL sucks.

the FL is so unbearably annoying. in the beginning I thought it was funny when she cried because the ML ruined her hair but she cries for every little thing. i hate her voice, her personality; everything about her is just a flop. i tried to stick it out but jfc. There's no romance, or if there is some, it's unbelievable because she's so annoying. she wants to go back to her home when she's a wanted criminal, and she wants to go with the cheng guy even though she saw him talk shit abt her (even if it's to keep her safe he still crushed her; you'd think it'd be reasonable for her to give up her feelings for him). the ML literally rebuilt her home for her and all she did was complain. Like, stfu. I get that they're trying to do this whole love triangle thing but it DOESNT work. also why did they make her voice so fucking annoying?? like when they do the body switch its tolerable but even then her personality makes the ML annoying as well.

A Love That Defies the Odds

When a low-ranking fairy accidentally resurrects a powerful demon, their fates become cosmically entangled as the world is thrown into turmoil.

I really enjoyed the first half of this drama. There are some truly memorable scenes. When she kisses him to save him when he’s under attack (causing the body switch that allows him to access power)? Swoon. 🫠 And when he saves her when her people are torturing her for setting him free? Total swoon!🔥

The cinematography is gorgeous, the storyline is solid, the twists & turns never stop coming, & the cast did amazing. And while all that still holds true for the second half, it started to bug me that our Leads just could not catch a break. They’d take 1 step forward just to take 3 steps back it seemed. And I felt like the FL never truly understood nor appreciated all the ML did for her. Because he wasn’t behaving in ways familiar to her then it didn’t count as love (when he actually grew to love her more than himself).

Even still, this is a really well-done drama. The chemistry is there, the acting is solid, & (for those who enjoy it) the tension/angst levels are high. So despite it not being one of my favorites, I still recognize & acknowledge the beauty of this drama (though I would’ve preferred we got a hug or kiss in the final reunion scene!)

Forbidden Love at its Best

This drama is one that I actually started watching back in 2022. By the time I watched this, Netflix already had all the episodes. I got to episode 22 or so and then I stopped watching. I'm not really sure why I stopped, to be honest. And then I completely forgot about it, and well, fast forward to now, when I finally remembered that I hadn't finished it yet. I decided to just finish the rest of the episodes one day back in February, and I am so glad that I did.

The love story between Dongfang Qingcang and Orchid was absolutely devastating and so beautiful at the same time. I actually didn't mind Esther Yu's acting in this. In my opinion, it made sense for her character. The visuals, cinematography, and the OSTs are absolutely gorgeous and every episode honestly made me laugh and cry. The plot was so complex and I also loved the magic system in this as well. The ending had me absolutely devastated, and I definitely did sob a little bit. I only wish that we got to see more of Dongfang Qingcang and Orchid, especially after Qingcang came back after 500 years. The acting was honestly fantastic, and that scene (I forget which episode, but I believe it was around 33 or so) where Orchid sacrifices herself to save everyone and when Dongfang Qingcang finds out, I could feel every emotion and the anguish and heartbreak that he was experiencing in that moment. It was truly a heartbreaking scene, and Dylan Wang acted in that scene so well. Esther Yu's acting was also so good in this scene as well.

Such a sweet romantic tale

Started watching it randomly and was blown away and got hooked BADLY, finished it in 3 days and just wish I could experience it all again for the first time.
The acting by the main leads is amazing, this was my first ever time watching Dylan Wang and I am amazed by how good he is. I think I am gonna watch more dramas of the two main leads.
The story is amazing, I honestly wish there was more. The tracks are all so nice to hear as well.
I never skipped the ost track because of how beautiful it was.

Love, Fate, and Heartbreak

I just loved the ML! This drama was hilarious, but it also had me crying so much because of both the ML and FL. I was not okay. This show broke my heart in some parts.

I was a little disappointed with the side characters. I didn't like them as much as I hoped I would, and I got annoyed by their behavior at times. I also found the FL's voice kind of annoying at first, but I could handle it.

What I really loved was how this show focuses on emotions and how powerful they can be. Sometimes you just need someone in your life to help you find and unlock those emotions. I also liked how the drama shows that when you truly love someone, living can feel like hell itself, causing you to lose yourself.

This show touches on some really heavy themes, such as how love can drive people mad and how, if you truly love someone, you can let them go. It also shows how fate can be unfair and that you can't run away from who you are, because it will always find you.
