Full of Political Intrigue & Maneuvering!!

I have mixed feelings about this show, the political intrigue and mystique is enough to grab your attention, but does it sustain your interest till the last?

There were two things that made me watch this show- Xiao Zhan & Zhang Jing Yi. Both are my favorites, and I was particularly leaning towards enjoying their chemistry. Even though the storyline is centered around the revenge that the lead protagonist seeks, there are subtle, somber moments of romance that sneak in between and provide the much needed relief in this action thriller. At times, the storytelling is oddly paced and drags on, but somehow the narrative streamlines into another possible mystery that manages to save the show from nosediving into netherland. The main protagonists have a palpable chemistry and camaraderie; obviously Xiao Zhan’s Zang Hai remains the highlight. He is all brains and no brawn; it quite reminded of his act in “The Untamed” where his Wei Wuxian was quick to hide behind Lan Wanji. Here the other two protagonists become his protectors.

revenge is a dish best served cold

I don’t have much to say but I really enjoyed it despite not picking it up when it first aired

I’m a avid fan of revenge stories like I’ll always be in for a good juicy revenge story and when I heard this had a romance subplot? like count me in (I had nothing to watch T-T)

this is my first drama that I’ve watched of XZ and I didn’t notice much about the acting but he did really well, I was rather more focused on the story lol

some would have preferred there would be no romance, others wish the romance would have been a higher percentage of the story

but I think the balance was done nicely at least because a lot of stories liked these or have two very opposite genres would usually have a hard time finding a balance between the two so it would leave either one of the genres badly done

and with how the story was, the romance wasn’t done badly or interfered too much with the defence plot unlike badly done revenge stories so I think it was nicely done and romance wasn’t the main focus anyways

there was some rather common used plot devices or tropes in the revenge that made it kinda predictable but they were still able to write a rather original revenge

the story arcs can be separated to 3 arcs so arc 1 being enemy 1, enemy2, enemy 3
in arc 3 it was rather surprising who the final enemy was..reminded me of the quote “keep your friends close but your enemies closer” and was a shock factor

tho whenever they started to talk about tombs and contraptions like puzzles, I kinda got bored or sometimes lost

overall i would def rewatch this in the future whenever im in the mood for a revenge story

A must watch!

This drama is intriguing. The opening episodes set the stage for a compelling tale of revenge and redemption, as Zang Hai embarks on his journey to uncover the secrets behind his family’s downfall and restore honor to his family’s name. Expect a lot of mind games, plots and all. I am really waiting for his end revenge and am.

Xiao zhan

Very good drama, waiting for his revenge and all. I really like the plot of this movie, everything seems to going well. I just wished XZ knew how to fight but it’s good to be smart. You can navigate everything well.

I hope people will enjoy the drama and what it has to offer and also support other casts as well

A brilliant cinematographic masterpiece!

I will never understand how some people here have reviewed the story 8 or gave any other score below 10. This is literally a masterpiece in terms of story (strong beginning, intriguing story-line, always keeping you on the edge of wanting more), acting, all characters are killing the acting, I even like the antagonists because they are very clever, unpredictable, not to talk about the quality of the series, directing, and songs.

I somehow have gotten tired lately from watching Chinese dramas because somehow they were all the same, and lately I felt that the stories were very annoying with characters that were boring and at times even dummy. But this one hits different, it doesn't focuses (so far) on unnecessary romance, but it follows the path of strategic revenge. I am even learning so much myself from what I am seeing.

I must say that Zhang Hai is truly cold blooded. In the battle between the Marquis and his son, I felt sorry for the Marquis even though I know how many evil deeds he did. But thinking that he actually saved Zhang Hai two times, he didn’t even blink when seeing him dead. Anyway, the battle gave me goosebumps, it was fabulous to watch.

Crowd Pleaser

Wow! This story is so gripping. I am talking to the TV. The beginning episode of Legend of Zhang Hai (2025) is torturous, as the hero’s family is wiped out before his eyes, when he was a child. There is a tortuous and very ruthless villain. This drama may not be for the faint of heart. Nonetheless, there is thrilling action, while the reason for revenge is set up in this drama. The viewer gets to see extensive training in the mindset for revenge, as the young child grows into a man. It appears that the set for the Chinese drama ‘The Double’ was used for this drama The Legend of Zhang Hai. The story is very mysterious as well.

Many will remember the star of The Legend of Zhang Hai from the beloved Chinese Drama “Untamed”. What I like about the acting of male lead Xiao Zhan is that he is always in the moment. Some actors become wall flowers when they don’t have speaking lines in a scene. They stop acting. Xiao Zhan is constantly performing, using his eyes to search the environment, moving his fingers, small motions that don’t steal the focus. The Costar for The Legend of Zhang Hai is Zhang Jing Yi. She has the ability to draw out the best performances of her male costars.

I like The Legend of Zhang Hai. This Mystery Thriller Fantasy Chinese drama is unusual, with a different type of storyline.

Interesting story

So far, the plot and development of character of main male lead is interesting. So with the supporting characters.
What I find lacking is the absence of chemistry between the main male and the female protagonists. There was more chemistry between the two main leads in The untamed.
pleasant surprise was Wallace Chung in a guest role. Since Sword and Brocade, I haven’t seen any new dramas of his. I see a few listed as TBA, unreleased then.

Unreliable Review

Since the series is being dropped only after three episodes and because there was nothing offensively bad, this should be considered an unreliable review.

The main reason I'm dropping this is because I just wasn't able to connect with any of the characters or buy into the events. It wasn't so much the actors but the flow of the plot and the dialogue. It felt like a storyteller who's telling what should be an emotional narrative in a monotone voice. The reactions and aftermath of every turning point didn't feel quite natural and the character growth of the ML wasn't very impressive.

Imi place chimie dintre actorii principali !Recomand din tot sufletul !
