Plot Twists and Intrigue

The first thing I want to mention about this drama is that it will grab your attention and not let go. Every single solitary episode captured your mind and had you cheering for the ML.

It was particularly refreshing to see that he was able to think on his feet when he faced obstacles and succeed when it looked like he was losing.

I also found it applaud worthy that the script writer kept him front and center and his character was not overshadowed by the FL. She was his support, and even though she tried to manipulate him onto her side, so to speak, he stayed true to his task.

I was also impressed by the integration and role of every support cast character. Every single one of them added to the story and did not detract from the story.

Every line in the script, every set, the costumes and buildings were an impeccably situated to add depth and authenticity to the drama without becoming a distraction.

Fight scenes were well done and the correography was very well done. It was also nice to see that the ML’s role of being a scholarly personality was not incorporated into being a martial artist as well. He had people on his side that helped him in that aspect which allowed his character to shine for the brilliance of his mind and not physical prowess.

It was also nice to see a role where the revenge side of the ML was separate from the kind and generous person he was - and not to become cruel and violent.

This is definitely a drama worth watching if you want something different from the typical palace intrigue and politics.

Great start but predictable ending

The series started off pretty strong and promising. The plot kept getting better too. The mind games were pretty interesting too.
But the series had many plot holes and the one thing I dreaded right from the start actually ended up being the ending.

Acting was top notch. Xiao Zhan obviously did amazing. The micro expressions were a great deal. So was JingYi. The casting felt perfect. You could feel the emotions they were trying to portray.

Talking about the characters.
ML was pretty good at the start but he was consistently under prepared during all his plans. Luck was on his side that he got off safe almost every time, or probably because the mask man was saving him every now and then.
The FL was supposed to be smarter than ML. Or so they claimed at the start. She was also someone who had a huge network of intel in the kingdom and was a great fighter herself. Yet by the middle of the show, she was just an accessory. Someone who had a great chance of getting utilised for the plot but was instead ignored and kept as a mere NPC.
Loved FL's mom. Amazing yet short lived character.
The masters were all amazing, and heart-melting.
MLs friends, FLs friends were all great.
Loved the Marquis. No matter what he did, still couldn't hate him tbh.
The character of Eununch Cao felt a little off. Like, they not only didn't give a good story, but the ending was pretty rushed and then you realise the backstory was pretty weird. As if the writers couldn't actually come up with a good story so they just wrote something random.
The masked man!! The ending that I dreaded the most. But well I just lost interest after that. The story was already very slow (despite I watched it in 2x.) but after this, I just skipped through the scenes. I no longer was interested in the dialogues. Just the end.

And coming to the character I hated the most. Zhixin!!
Freaking headache. Not only was he immature but also a stupid ass who was guided by Zang Hai. But then he ends up betraying ZH despite him being the one who killed his dad. Like come on man, you know very well what your dad did. But you...you lied to ZH, your benefactor, about the 3rd villain. And not just that, you work in cahoots with the 3rd guy and then backstab ZH.!!! Just too much
Well obviously ZH knocks some sense into his head in the end and he kinda does the right thing. But ahh...the character development for this character all went down the drain.

One of the Best Revenge Cdramas

Legend of Zang Hai is an absolute masterpiece. I genuinely believe this is one of the best Chinese dramas made in recent years—and I say this as someone who has watched a large number of C-dramas. This isn’t bias or hype; it’s appreciation for exceptionally strong writing.
That said, this drama isn’t for everyone. If you only enjoy romance-focused stories or lighter, straightforward plots, this might not work for you. But for viewers who appreciate heavy, layered narratives and carefully written revenge stories, this drama is outstanding. I’m a sucker for revenge stories—especially well-written ones—and this may honestly be the best revenge drama I’ve watched. The writing is tight, smooth, and consistent. Nothing feels dragged, and the story remains engaging from beginning to end.
What impressed me most was the screenwriting. Every plot point felt intentional. This is one of the rare shows where I actively found myself appreciating the writer’s work while watching. The pacing never slows, yet it never feels rushed. The tension is steady, and the story keeps you fully invested at all times.
The opening episodes are incredibly strong. The drama uses a fantasy-like atmosphere—especially with the ghost soldiers—to create intrigue, only to later ground everything in reality through poison and hallucination. I loved how that was handled: it gave the show an eerie aura without turning it into an actual fantasy drama. Even before Zang Hai fully appears, the story hooks you immediately. You’re constantly asking questions—who is he, what is he hiding, who are the real enemies—and that curiosity never fades.
The revenge arc is where the drama truly shines. Zang Hai doesn’t rely on martial arts; his strength lies entirely in intelligence, calculation, and manipulation. Watching him slowly weave his plans, turn his enemies against one another, and trap them without ever revealing himself was incredibly satisfying. The revenge is slow, but never boring. As he gets closer to the Marquis, you see just how dangerous and strategic he can be.
I also loved that Zang Hai is not a flawless character. Early on, he’s impatient and makes mistakes—sometimes frustrating ones. But that imperfection makes him realistic. He has plot armor, yes, but his plans don’t always go smoothly, and he pays for his missteps. That balance made the story feel grounded rather than overly convenient.
The villains were exceptionally well written. They were genuinely hateful, dark, and cruel—especially the Marquis and the eunuch. They weren’t just obstacles; they felt like real threats. Their actions were horrifying, which made their downfall deeply satisfying. I also loved the twist that the three enemies shared a past. The reveal of the third enemy and the benefactor was especially well done—the fact that the person who saved Zang Hai also set him on the path of revenge added a tragic layer to the story.
What made the revenge even better was that Zang Hai never had to dirty his hands. His enemies destroyed themselves through their own obsession with power. The third enemy’s death—caused by the very ghost soldiers he coveted—was poetic and extremely satisfying.
Another standout aspect was the relationship with his shifu. It genuinely felt like a father-son bond, which made the ending all the more emotional. I also loved the tombs, mechanics, geometry, and trap-dismantling elements. That entire aspect of the story was fresh, exciting, and unlike anything I’ve seen in a drama before. The show never lost momentum—something was always happening.
As for the romance, I thought it was handled perfectly. It wasn’t excessive, but it was meaningful. Zang Hai spent his life consumed by hatred, and that touch of love gave him purpose beyond revenge. Without her, I don’t think he would have known how to live afterward. She also served as his moral compass, constantly grounding him. Their chemistry felt natural, and both actors delivered strong performances.
Cinematography, music, and acting were all excellent. The visuals were beautiful, and the soundtrack fit every scene perfectly.
My main criticism is the styling. Xiao Zhan is undeniably gorgeous, but his wardrobe and hairstyle were repetitive and, frankly, boring. I understand that this was intentional—reflecting his lack of interest in status or appearance—but I still wish there had been more variation. That said, it also helped the drama avoid feeling like an idol show, which worked in its favor.
The ending was extremely satisfying. Everything was wrapped up properly, and while I fully expected a tragic ending, I was pleasantly surprised by the hopeful conclusion.
Would I recommend Legend of Zang Hai? Absolutely. If you enjoy intelligent, plot-heavy stories that require your full attention, this drama is a must-watch. It’s not something you put on in the background—you need to focus—but it rewards you for it. The acting, writing, pacing, and storytelling were all top-tier. I truly loved this drama.

Beyond The Untamed: Xiao Zhan Shines in This Gripping Tale of Revenge

The drama opens with a familiar yet gripping premise: Zhan Hai witnesses the brutal massacre of his entire family and fellow disciples. Left an orphan, he is rescued by a mysterious man—someone he comes to regard as his savior. Determined to avenge the bloodshed, Zhan Hai devotes himself to rigorous preparation, mastering the arts of deception, architecture, and geomancy under expert teachers—all in pursuit of vengeance.

His path is perilous. While striving to earn the favour of Marquis Ping Jin—the man responsible for the massacre—Zhan Hai barely escapes death at the hands of jealous rivals. But soon he realizes that the Marquis is not his only enemy. There are three powerful adversaries, each more cunning and ruthless than the last, all hunting for an artifact his father allegedly brought back from Dongxia—a relic said to hold unimaginable power. To survive, Zhan Hai must outwit every one of them and uncover the identity of the third. But when the truth is finally revealed, it shakes him to his core.

Marquis Ping Jin himself is a formidable figure—a ruthless leader who trusts no one. Yet his fractured family dynamics provide Zhan Hai with opportunities to exploit. He even forges an alliance with the Marquis’ second son, only to discover that this ally is far more intelligent and calculating than he appears, dragging Zhan Hai into one precarious trap after another.

The drama is suspenseful and keeps you hooked as Zhan Hai maneuvers through layers of intrigue, deadly schemes, and shifting loyalties. Every move feels like a high-stakes game of strategy.

Xiao Zhan delivers an outstanding performance as Zhan Hai, exuding quiet confidence and emotional depth. Since The Untamed, this is his most compelling role—his nuanced portrayal and expressive range surpass many of his previous works.

The soundtrack is equally enchanting, with Xiao Zhan lending his voice to one of the theme songs, adding an extra layer of charm. Combined with stunning costumes, breathtaking cinematography, and a stellar supporting cast, the production is a visual and emotional feast.

If there is one minor gripe, it is the recurring trope where capable and righteous men choose to abandon political power for a carefree life instead of stepping into leadership—a choice that feels frustratingly familiar in historical dramas.

Overall, this is a masterpiece worth savoring. I debated between a perfect 10 and 9.5, I settled on 9.5—simply because The Untamed still holds that top spot in my heart. But make no mistake—this drama is excellent and comes highly recommended.

Tale of revenge and politics drama

This drama isn’t just about flashy fights or pretty costumes, Legend of Zang Hai has real substance behind its fantasy setting. The story balances adventure, mystery and emotion in a way that keeps you engaged without ever feeling dragged out.
I like how it doesn’t rely only on action or romance to keep things interesting but instead builds a world full of layers where every character has their own purpose and growth. The pacing flows nicely with each episode giving you either a big reveal, a clever twist or a quiet but powerful emotional moment.
It feels like the writers actually cared about tying everything together instead of just throwing in random drama to fill time.
The cast really carries the story too. The male lead gives a performance that feels strong and commanding, but also layered with vulnerability, so you see more than just a hero type.
The supporting cast also adds depth with side characters that are actually memorable instead of just background fillers. The action scenes are exciting and well-shot, but what I appreciate even more are the emotional beats and character arcs that give the drama its heart. Sure, there are a few predictable moments and some scenes you can kind of see coming but they don’t take away from how much fun and heart this drama has.
It’s a solid pick if you want epic fantasy that actually makes you care about the people in it.

another xiao zhan acting conviction alertt

As someone who loves male-centric and political dramas, this series never disappoints. All the positive reviews I read about Legend of Zang Hai before watching it were not exaggerated—it truly is a great series.

Xiao Zhan’s acting is consistently on point. What I admire most about him is his willingness to explore diverse roles, and he always executes them so well. This is the kind of show you want to marinate because every episode keeps the plot engaging—never a dull moment.

I also love strong female leads like Xiang Antu, portrayed by Zhang Jingyi. She really embodied her character with conviction. The acting of all the cast is excellent, and the storyline keeps you guessing—you genuinely never know who to trust. I especially enjoy smart, cunning male leads, and I appreciate that this series doesn't rely on the stereotypical "invincible" male lead trope. In fact, it’s refreshing to see the male lead depend on the female lead in sword fighting and physical battles—something rare in dramas.

Another thing, it felt a bit out of place to see a queen character with obvious Botox and lip fillers—it breaks the portrayal in a historical setting. Not hating tho, just found it distracting.

Sa villains sad, wa kaayo ko na-satisfy sa ilang pagkamatay oi samot na si zhao bingwen, like I want a brutal death for that mofo pero okay since namatay man sad siya sa something nga obsessed siya which is the gui seal.

That said, this drama has it all: action, romance, suspense, and political intrigue. It’s a must-watch, seriously. And lastly, the chemistry between Zang Hai and Zhuang Zhixing is chef's kiss lmaoo

Zhang Hai's Revenge

The series started off very well. It really gave me the image of a very high-quality series at first. The story seemed solid and the execution was perfect. However, our series fell in the later episodes, especially after the 25th episode, and became illogical. It was as if the evil eye had been cast on the series, which was very high-quality. These scriptwriters, after a certain point in long dramas, get caught up in the negativity of how to extend it and start making mistakes. There were so many mistakes and simplifications that I was surprised. I wish it hadn't been extended so much. I said that side effects hadn't entered the Revenge series. The rhythm of the series falls with the calculation of how to extend the series, they deviate from other paths, patches are made to the story, and this spoils the story. These things happened. Simplicity has left its mark on the beautiful series. They dropped the series, which I was going to give 10 out of 10, to 8. I couldn't bring myself to drop it even further. For example; Zhang Hai is in a coma for three days due to a stab wound. He wakes up. He swims through a tunnel, listens to someone, and comes back again. Our minds have been mocked and shamed. A disgraceful way of thinking. Whichever scriptwriter came up with it. If it was that important, someone else could have swam there, listened and told Zhang Hai. It would have been more logical and realistic. The man was dying, in such a sick state that he had just woken up, he could not even walk. First, they put the comatose person in a normal bed. They observe him a little more, let him rest and then discharge him. If the scriptwriter does not know these things, can't he ask and learn? For example, he is reviving the dead. In other words, it is full of nonsense.
I could not feel the love between ML and FML. It was like a business relationship. There was a sudden falling in love incident and then a little closeness was felt. These were superficial like that. They rose suddenly. In other words, they could not even understand their feelings for each other. It was such an amorphous love story. It was understood later, but the narration was broken. I cannot say that the two were compatible or incompatible because they did not seem to be together much. There was very little image of a relationship. It cannot be said that they were a good couple. The series was a male actor series.
Towards the last episodes; Dongsing queen or something An Tu's sister, as if she knew her brother would come, arranged a marriage for him and sent him to another country. She finds him as if he had put it there. I mean, when you write these, you think a little, how can I do it etc. By saying let the idiots watch it, the audience is literally taken for fools. I was very upset while watching it. It didn't suit this beautiful series at all. Unfortunately, it maintained its maturity in quality at the beginning, then it decreased and decreased, it didn't work. I really liked the cast. Especially the guest actors, those who were rarely shown, but there were special actors who could show themselves even in those two frames. I appreciated it. My biggest appreciation is for Wallace Chung. He suited the character of Kuai Duo very well, he played very well, he added value to his role. I liked it very much. Xiao Zhan carried it very well from beginning to end. The series revolved around him and he was successful. I can't say the same thing for Zhang Jing Yi, his role was very small. It would have been better if he hadn't played this role. I guess it was played because they said there is no such thing as a small or big role, it was a simple role that anyone could play, in my opinion. I especially found Liang Chao very very good in the supporting role. In my opinion, he should get an award. He played so beautifully and fluently. He also suited his role very well. I liked it. Huang Jue added value to his role. The role suits him very well. I liked him too. Michelle Bai gave a very good performance despite her very short role. It suits her very well too. I liked it. She added value to her role. Zhao Zi Qi and Liu Chuao also gave very good performances. I liked it. Xing Ming Shan, Yang Yu Tong, Zhaou Qi, Sha Bao Liang, Quan Yi Lun, Yu Nan, Tian Xiao Jie were the actors who caught my attention. I liked the actors very much. I give them an 8 for their sake. I give the scriptwriter a zero for ruining such a quality series and making illogical mistakes.

A solid drama

i was seated for this since the day they announced the cast. the first leak of the leads a month later made me even more excited. up until the release with every new trailer and teaser i was more and more excited. i always try my best to not get too hyped for any drama since that brings disappointment a lot of the time but i couldn't help myself with this one, i tuned in thinking i might get disappointed somewhere down the line.
well, thankfully nothing of that sort happened and i am really happy and surprised. the story was pretty straightforward, the ml wasn't invincible needed help along the way, but didn't lose his focus on his revenge. i absolutely adored the fl i just wish she was more present there.

the acting was great specially xiao zhan, huang jue & the actor who played cao jingxian impressed me the most. zhang jingyi was excellent with whatever she was given which imo wasn't enough but still i am quite happy with her character.

every single character left impression on me. my absolute favorites are zanghai, antu, gaoming shifu, liu chu shifu, zhuang zhixing etc

i haven't written a long review in a while so it's all over the place but thank you to the cast and crew for this absolute masterpiece of a drama despite some small hiccups i loved it overall.

zanghai & antu i love you two so much. xiao zhan and jingyi hope you two reunite soon in a romance focused drama.

& lastly hope season 2 actually ends up happening.

An intriguing story, yet weak romance

The mistery is very entertaining. You will want to watch it episode after episode as you are curious about what will happen next. You will guest who the mastermind until the end of the drama. All of the actors in this drama did very good jobs.

Sadly, the romance is quite weak. I still do not understand why they both fall for each other as they only interacted briefly. They fall for each other just for the sake of the story. I can not seek their sparkling romance.

Not A Popular Opinion

This drama started with a bang. The first episode was intriguing and mysterious. But the pacing got quite slow for my liking. The preparation and the elimination of the first enemy took too long for my liking. I dropped the drama twice in between. The acting and cinematography were nice, but the pacing was too slow. There were some thrilling moments in between, but overall, there was not enough balance for my liking. As for the story, the writing was not that good. The revelation of the 3rd enemy was hinted at right from the start, because of the mask. I did not find the main surprise element that surprising at all, unfortunately. Also, the finale did not feel satisfying to me at all. There was not enough tension, and the 3rd enemy got his karma too easily, in my opinion. Moreover, though I understand it was not a romance drama, I unfortunately did not find any chemistry between the ML & FL. The FL was brilliant in the initial episode, but I absolutely did not like how her character later turned out. Though I understand it was a male-centric drama, the character of the FL could have been handled better. The action scenes were nicely choreographed. Overall, the drama was a decent watch. The writing had way too many loopholes. Not too bad, but not that good either.

UNDERSTANDING THE PLOT BETTER

Watched up to nine episodes so far and to be honest I have to leave this here, first thing first, the beginning set the betrayal/revenge plot. After all, we learned that Zhang Hai revenge isn't just there, but he actually has a REASON for it.

I've seen a few reviews mentioning the little Zhang hai ADAPTED quickly... But I think those little details were there to not CONFUSE us, I mean it was clearly shown that he was determined... Resilient and a little rebellious. Ask me why? I'll tell you, you can see little him fishing that little boy out of that carriage, because he was DETERMINED to learned the reason why his father isn't back as promised.

He's RESILIENT, because I BELIEVE no way should a little boy be able to build all those tunnels without a huge RESOLVE.

And being REBELLIOUS?

He brought that little boy from the carriage into the tunnels and kept him there without the knowledge of his mother. He knew his mother wouldn't ALLOW that right? And of course, when she found it out, she had them RELEASED the boy, and ask him to block all the tunnels which he was RELUCTANT to do at first, but later gives in.

AND WHEN HIS FAMILY DIED?

As expected, he cried when his parents died... But got knocked out by the smoke where the masked man found him... He also cried in the boat... But at the same time was swearing revenge in the next few minutes. Like I said, he's not another ordinary LITTLE boy, because I believe any normal little boy would've ran out the moment he saw his parents being slaughtered, but he didn't, and why is that? We can see, the hatred is being born right then and there, leading to the will to get revenge on them. So when he finally got the chance to, he HOP on it.

AND XIAO ZHAN?

Xiao Zhan PERFORMANCE was just great. We can see he has gotten even better, his acting is too notch and he brings every emotions into the character.

ALSO I wasn't expecting that sci Fi revelation... Had to watch the LOST TOMB tomb earlier today to see Zhang Hai zhuan goes beyond just a revenge driven drama, it's linked... It has depth that requires people with great insight to understand.

The politics.. the power struggle, and everything is just perfect.. okay I want moreeeee.

And a little ADVICE for people who are more invested in romance themed drama...this might not be your cup of tea... GRACIAS.
