A Chess Game Played in Blood!
"Legend of Zang Hai" is a masterfully crafted labyrinth of vengeance. It replaces the chaotic horror of fantasy witha calculated ascent from the shadows into the suffocating precision of court politics.. Watching this series feels like walking on a blade’s edge; one moment you are mesmerized by the sheer elegance of the protagonist's mind, and the next, you are frozen by the cruelty of his reality. It captures a world where a smile is more dangerous than a sword. The scarce glimpses of genuine connection are deeply touching, yet they stand powerless against the relentless, devouring tide of ambition and betrayal.Acting/ Cast
The main leads, portrayed by Xiao Zhan and Zhang Jingyi, deliver performances that are a masterclass in silence and very convincing.
Xiao Zhan (Zang Hai) We see a man shaped by trauma, embodying the notion that to defeat a monster, one must become a shadow. What truly sets this performance apart is his voice. It adds a completely different flavor to the character—a haunting gravitas. Through his delivery, low and steady yet dripping with suppressed rage, he perfectly conveys the suffocating weight of loss and the burning, cold fire of a lifelong grudge.
The drama excels in portraying the early enemies—characters of pure, unhinged madness whose insanity made you shiver with genuine fear. However, the final antagonist pales in comparison. After facing such "monsters," the ultimate reveal felt lightweight and lacked the menacing aura of the earlier threats.
Moreover, while the leads were perfect, some casting choices defied logic. Zhou Qi simply lacked the grit and weight required for a commander. His appearance was too soft and youthful to lead an army, making his unearned authority feel comical rather than commanding.
Story
The story begins with a brutal purge, setting the stage for a meticulous game of revenge. "Legend of Zang Hai" stands out as one of the most intricate historical dramas, offering a richly textured narrative of strategy and intrigue.
However, the conclusion leaves a bitter aftertaste. It wasn't that the ending was rushed, but rather poorly executed. By trying so hard to hide the final villain to create a twist, the writers neglected to give them a believable buildup. Furthermore, the final act suffers from "Death for the sake of Death." Some characters seemed to meet their end not because the plot required it, but simply to force a tragic atmosphere. These deaths felt unnecessary and hollow, stripping the finale of the emotional impact it should have had.
Conclusion
This drama is a profound and intense viewing experience. Its complex themes and slow-burn tension will captivate you, especially the mesmerizing vocal performance of the lead. However, be prepared for a resolution that doesn’t quite match the brilliance of the start.
If you are ready for a journey that challenges your mind—even if the destination is slightly disappointing—"Legend of Zang Hai" is a ride worth taking.

This drama really hook me up
This drama captivated me from the beginning, even though it's only 8 episodes, I can definitely say that this is Xiao Zhan's best drama, the plot is absolutely perfect. The anti-hero character as the main character, totally my cup of tea, Xiao Zhan's acting is excellent in this drama, and Zhang Jingyi is very beautiful. I've been thinking about this drama all day, what will happen next, this is so crazy.

Unpredictable masterpiece
WHAT. A. WATCH! I honestly didn’t expect to be this obsessed, but wow — this drama completely blew me away. From start to finish, it kept me hooked, emotional, and questioning my own morals (in the best way possible). The acting was top-tier. Every character felt real, but especially Zhang Hai and Antu — their bond was so deep and beautiful, it made me feel everything. And don’t even get me started on the queen’s story… I was literally crying like I’d lost someone in my own life.
And listen — I was so into this series, I kept thinking about it even at work. For days, I was trying to figure out who the masked man and the third villain were. The suspense was killing me! And when it turned out that the so-called saviour was the ultimate villain? I mean… I could never have thought of that twist. Absolutely brilliant. Zhang Hai was so smart to uncover that truth in the end. That scene alone made the entire build-up worth it.
One thing I truly loved was how the drama didn’t fall into the usual clichés. I kept thinking, “Why isn’t Zhang Hai thinking ahead? Why is he failing so often?” And then it hit me — this felt so much more like real life. In most dramas, the leads are always ten steps ahead of the villains. But here, Zhang Hai stumbled, made mistakes, and yet still found his way through. And that final move, deceiving the villain with the actual truth? SO satisfying. That moment right there was my favourite.
Major props to the scriptwriters for creating such a layered, unpredictable story. The way they wrote these characters — flawed, emotional, sometimes reckless — made me connect with them on a different level. And the actors absolutely delivered. Every performance felt genuine and raw.
And though this wasn’t a romance drama, the chemistry between Zhang Hai and Antu was top-notch. I could feel their love so much stronger because it wasn’t loud — it was steady, loyal, and deep. That hug at the end? So powerful. It spoke more than a hundred love declarations.
Also, a side note: I have to mention how gorgeous the lighting was in the night scenes. It actually looked like firelight or natural sources instead of the usual artificial studio glow you see in most dramas. It made everything feel more immersive.
All in all, this has to be one of the best Chinese dramas I’ve ever watched. It’s set a new bar for me. I’ll probably be thinking about this one for a while.

A MASTERPIECE anyone cannot miss!!!
A rating 10/10 for every category is not overrated! The plot, the actors, music and costume make this drama beyond perfect. Every new episode brings in new twists and ideas. Actors’ performance are so flawless. You might actually end up liking some of the villains lol.
As for Xiao Zhan, I can say this is his masterpiece in acting! His performance, facial expression and voice projection are very detailed and on point. This drama uses live sound recording technique which makes noises and voices more real.
All I can say is you must watch The Lengend of Zanghai.

Missing the magic of the ML in Untamed
Felt like just another drama with nice cinematography, slow pacing but decent storytelling.Perhaps it was his character that needed to show he was cool, collected and calculating that didn’t speak to me the same way he did in Untamed where his range of emotions from cheeky to tortured is still fresh in my memory to this day.
Strange that the Emperor would let his hostage princess run Zhen Tower - would have liked an explanation for that. Loved the way his master looked out for him till the end. The twist on the 3rd enemy was good for me but the justification of why this enemy wanted to rule the world was lacking - just because he came from a poor background and was bullied? Wasn’t there a better way to unite the whole world without sacrificing citizens of another country? Shouldn’t he have more empathy since he had it tougher growing up?
Perhaps I’ve become more cynical after watching countless dramas but during the scene when hundreds of innocent soldiers were getting killed because of the ML’s plan, I wondered what justifies his revenge for the 14 people of his family. Is his revenge so important that he can easily orchestrate the spilling of innocent blood? (Evil general got rescued from prison by his generals who killed lots of innocent guards AND they went on to kill soldiers guarding the city… all planned by the ML who used another enemy to make this move)

One of my all time favorites
This show had me hooked from start to finish. Most dramas that are 40 episodes always have filler side plots and characters that I'm not really interested in and I end up fast-forwarding a lot of parts of the show, but I can honestly say that with this show I didn't have to fast forward anything and there were no boring plots, all the characters were interesting and the twists just kept me engaged until the very end. I only took off half a star because the love story aspect of the show did not really satisfy me, they had only one kiss in the whole show and it just wasnt giving "im so in love". I also took off half a star for the ending as well, because it just didn't seem that happy... I wish they had showed their life in the future, maybe getting married or something like that.I just felt like there wasn't enough happiness at the end of the show, they didnt even say goodbye to some of their friends which made NO SENSE. Another thing i didnt like was that he never learned ANY martial arts during those 10 years knowing he was planning a very dangerous revenge?? Come on lol. but other than that I rated it 9 stars. Was this review helpful to you?

Decent watch for those looking for a revenge plot with political intrigue
Highlights:- Great start from ep 1 with nice pacing (despite being a slow burn) that kept me engaged for the first 20-ish episodes.
- I had a lot of love for the actors who played Gao Ming and the Marquis - they were probably my favourite characters. The actor who play Cao Jing Xian did a great job too
- The chemistry between the actors were great, especially the interesting dynamic that was shown between Zang Hai and the Marquis (heck they had more chemistry than the main couple), the back and forth schemes and wondering who would outsmart the other was fun. Even though the Marquis was the bad guy, I couldn't hate him.
- Following Zang Hai's journey and just feeling for the poor guy. He was imperfect but that is what made him real and human.
Lows:
- I felt the show lost some momentum after the Marquis died (maybe I'm just biased but I feel that he was a big asset to the story). It was also due to what felt like a forced love line between Zang Hai and Antu. I have no issue with romance being added to this type of plot, in fact, I'm a fan of watching romcoms/romance dramas, but there was not enough emotional development between the couple to make me believe in their relationship. It lacked substance - they went from 0 to 100 too quickly. They should have omitted the romance or at least give it proper development.
- The writing wasn't very consistent throughout the drama and the reveal of the third person felt anti-climatic. I wish it was someone we wouldn't suspect (I mean of course everyone would be suspicious of a masked man ep 1 lol - it should've been someone else).
- Like many dramas, the ending wasn't the best. I felt like they just wrapped everything up way too easily after dragging things on for 10+ episodes. This could've been shortened to 30 eps.
Overall, a decent watch compared to many of the releases lately. It definitely got my attention (especially because it initially reminded me of Nirvana, but it's definitely NOT on par with the classic series).

For me, best drama and love that romance is non existent so far. Hate tropey romance drama!
Xiao Zhan and other actors are so good. Even the 2 young actors who acted for young Xiao Zhan, 2nd master, the young princess and the fat disciple of Zhang Hai's father! Their acting are all on point! Xiao Zhan's acting has improved so dramatically!! No wonder since he worked hard as per his interviews and other main creator crews! I can't recommend this drama enough! Cannot wait for the next episode! Was this review helpful to you?

Well-written revenge drama, but struggles with uneven pacing
The story is set up well in the first episode where the foundation for revenge is laid and many of the antagonists are identified. Even Zhi Nu’s transition into Zang Hai is well done, providing all the details needed while measuredly moving the story forward.Zang Hai moves to the capital and the story immediately gets more interesting with the additional players being revealed, while the cunning moves he makes put him in prime position to exact his revenge. Unfortunately, once he manages to become a “trusted” aide of the Marquis, moving onto the aristocrat’s property, the story starts to become less interesting.
It did have moments of intrigue but mostly started to drag. The story was written as if it came straight from the novella with every character beat and backstory displayed in meticulous detail on screen. That’s great for a book but can be difficult to make interesting onscreen if the script is not written with broadcast entertainment in mind.
The ML, Xiao Zhan, is good in this as are most of the supporting characters. The chemistry between the ML and his mentor is perfect. Not so much chemistry with the FL. Their interactions were flat and the actress in the role wasn’t that great. Again, well written to start. However, this just couldn’t hold my interest. So I ended up dropping it.

The failed promise of an human adventure about revenge
Finally we got a cdrama this year that does take the audience seriously !It's the first cdrama imo with a writing that is actually good in 2025 (so far, we're in june, nothing actually decent was given by drmaland since january) and pretty impressive.
The intrigues were quite well put together, some things were stereotypes & predictible but the storyline was solid and following neccessary steps that made the story relevant, and which caught not only my attention but also my curiosity.
I hoped for more angst & thrill tho but they weren't there. I feel like there was a lack of ingeniosity in the portrayal of the story.
The acting and directing were very interesting, especially from the older cast and of course the main lead, Xian Zhan.
I'm very glad xz picked an actual good script after so many years, I was so tired of seing him not picking the right drama or movie to display his skills.
People compare it to "Nirvana In Fire" or "Joy of Life" but to be honest, it is very not at their levels at all. The drama failed to actually impress me and for many reason :
1. The pacing is bad, it's actually for me the main flaw of the drama. It left, on most episodes a sense of heavyness since they slowed down the storyline by dragging a lot of scenes for too long, scenes that were actually meaningless just for the sake of filling those 40ep.
If the drama has 20 to 25 eps, it would've been far more impressive, the thrill of the intrigues wouldn't have diminished after 10ish episodes.
2. The dialogues in the beginning were interesting but it didn't last long. The dialogues were just there to move through the story, not really to express layers nor depth.
"When you value your bond with others above it all, it makes you easy to be deceived ... The most powerful skill in this world is to deceive others with truth and honesty."
3. The chemistry of the cp is non existant which made their scenes so boring to watch for me. I didn't feel any connection while watching them interact. The fl acting wasn't bad of course, but it was def lacking a lot of aura and presence, imo she didn't fit the role.
4. The storyline around the revenge was too mechanical for my liking, I was expecting more emotional depth. I feel like the writer shouldn't have centered the revenge into one big villain during the first episodes. They should have play more with the idea of uncertainty and confusing elements to make the suspense around the journey of discovering the the truh more exciting.
5. I wish the psychology of the characters would've been more realistic.
All those vilains don't display enough grey areas in the way they are written. All of them are the evil cunning bad guys, it's too simplistic imo.
6. It lacks creative freedom, the directing is actually nice, but I wish it would've been more brave in adding unexpected artistic texture.
Don't get me wrong, the whole story around the gui seal is what was truly interesting for me but precisely the director could've done something more impressive with it.
There weren't enough scenes where you could feel the characters living real life lol, you know from the get go the characters play " the game of chess" for the sake of a fictional story, at no time you could connect what they are going through with actual real life ... not sure if what I'm saying makes sense but well, that's what I felt lol.
7. The whole idea of "deceiving others with truth" wasn't diplayed properly, it wasn't convincing enough. It's a shame because it could have bring more depth in the story. I dont understand why with so much potential, the director didn't choose to highlight and work better on those scenes where we could dive in precisely in the confusion between truth & lies, between the idea of deceiving while still loving at the same time etc ...
8. Some cgi were cringe as hell, especially those fire scenes, ruined the vibes lol.
Overall, the story was interesting but the oversaturated male energy (from the conception itself of drama as a whole) kind make it lose the spark it was supposed to have.
At no point I got emotional, and I don't think it's because of the acting, precisely the directing & how the story unfold wasn't displayed in an authentic way. Nothing in this drama looks real or natural.
ps : the first episode was actually the best one + the 4 last ones.
